Am I the only one that prints to read?
#1I have taken to printing long subs because I tend to have trouble reading large amounts online.
Bonus: The score is not visible on the readability print out, so I don't feel inclined to raise or lower any scores and actually stick to the 5 point system. -
Re: Am I the only one that prints to read?
#2I'm too lazy and with too little patience to do that. But I have found myself philosophizing sometimes whether or not I allow myself to get swayed by previously existing scores, so that sounds like a big plus. I too have problems reading long sections, that's why I always try and break up my text into sizable chunks, and often refuse to read subs that haven't gone through the same process. -

#3As a general rule, i hate printing things out. However, the single page format is hell to get through for some of the longer subs, which is why it takes me so long to get to them. I don't know what a good solution what be, though. -

#4Or I guess I could just use the tools available...
Giving Readability a try. -
Re: Am I the only one that prints to read?
#5Nope. I read them out. If I print them out, I am archiving them for some reason. (though usually that is done digitally). -
Re: Am I the only one that prints to read?
#6I am really liking Readability. Reading on my phone is generally more convenient but using the web browser is a pain. I constantly lose my place whenever I rotate it or try to leave what I'm reading and come back. Readability also helps me keep a list of all those subs I mean to read but never quite find the time for. -
Re: Am I the only one that prints to read?
#7The long ones are very intiminating to me. I do much better with subs that are are only a scroll or two in length. Once I have to scroll scroll scroll I hit a mental barrier. Once I set time aside I love them, but I often don't feel I have the time to sit and read them online. Printing would work very well for me, however I don't see myself doing it.
I might try readability though. I tend to read going to bed so that might be a good time to roll through a few and vote/comment the next day.
I don't like multi-page type sites that force you to roll through multiple pages to read the article either.
They do have things like this that would split up a long page automatically and could be turned on and off: http://www.script-tutorials.com/demos/79/index.html
Not sure I like that either though.

Re: Am I the only one that prints to read?
#8That's a bit of a catch 22, isn't it. Long ones rarely get a lot of votes, but if you want to reach up to the potential of a 5, you're gonna need a long one it seems. I know I am that way as well, I'm more likely to give a high score if it's well written, I personally enjoy it, AND I see that a lot of work has gone into it, and obviously reading long ones can seem like a real slog, simply because I'm not a very fast reader I guess.
I can still look at a page of text and see right away what it says, but it's one thing to read, and another to remember what you read. -

I feel the same way. It took me days to read The Keep Beneath the Dusky Star but I'm glad I did it because it's such an awesome sub. Yesterday was my second attempt at a read through of Fields of Flesh. Being able to kick back on the couch with just my phone made all the difference.

My only beef with multiple page articles is that they only seem to be used to inundate the reader with advertisements. The pages are noisy and take longer to load. Aside from that, I actually prefer them.
I really like that demo. I think the pagination should modify the url, though. Maybe have it act like an anchor and change the fragment? A feature in 4.3, perhaps? :)
