Do people ever alter their votes so that the final score will be more in line with what they want?

Like if a sub has a score of 3.0 with two votes, and I honestly think it should be a 3.5, and so I vote 4.5 in order to to bring it to 3.5?  Or vice versa.

Is there a word for that?

Though it doesn't always happen, a vote should always be what YOU would give. It's poor form to intentionally alter the average because you personally think a sub is worth more or less than it was given credit for.

It's not something that should ever be done - by voting to change the average, you're effectively suggesting that your opinion is more important than that of everyone else who has voted, because you're trying to change the overall to be more in line with what you personally think a sub is worth, not the community as a whole.

If you think a sub is perfect, give it a 5, even if everyone else is giving 3's. If you think a sub is absolute filth, give it a low score, even if everyone else is raving about it. It's your say!

I can't speak for anyone else but like SE, I always vote in accordance with how I personally judge a sub is currently worth, as opposed to trying to alter the average to be in line with my own personal assessment. One of the things abt voting on the Citadel, though, is that everyone's entitled to their own voting rules and practices (hence so many voting practice subs and the Rule of the Hammer was born etc) so I can't say for certainty that no one ever does this.

I agree completely with what you've typed here SE. However, this is sadly not always the case.

I had wanted to include a reference to this in my sub but thought it wiser to keep it to myself for now. Addressing issues seems to be hazardous around here.

In the immortal (and altered) words of Aleister Crowley..."Vote How Thou Wilt."

Voting is an imperfect system. There is no good way to design the system and no way to control any voting habits.

It is what it is. Some vote how you say, others vote the other direction.

As long as the majority remain true to their own personal standards then the overall ranking will somewhat resemble overall reception. We just need more voters to reduce the amount of error one erroneous vote can cause!! (me included)

It would be good if we could get more people voting on subs.

I have voted higher on subs because people ask me too or because I think they-that person in particular-will be very upset by a low vote.

Just thought I would mention this. Was looking at imdb and saw a couple votes that said basically "I voted high to offset the inappropriately low votes of others even though I wouldn't actually vote this high" type comments.

Just have people thinking that their opinion is worth more than others so they feel they have to "offset" those that voted "wrong".

Can't get away from it anywhere.

In the forums you can hide the results of the polls... What about if you as the author could do the same thing with subs, if you so wish. Then it would only show the amounts of votes and the comments, not the average. Not foolproof, but meh it's something... Course it would probably require a lot of work...hiding the swords on those kinds of subs and what not. Or maybe just rewrite it so the swords stay empty no matter what the average is(on those subs)...

    Just tossing something out there.

First, I would have to admit there is a problem with our specific voting system. Specific as in not something that is human nature around any voting system.

Right now, I don't see a specific problem with how we have it. I took this thread more as an overall discussion about voting than a call for changes. Not saying we can't throw out ideas and brainstorm a bit, but there will not be a perfect way to do votes that will make everybody happy. As far as this site, we are in a comfortable status quo which isn't great but isn't crap either. That might be as close as we will ever get...
