   I took 30 Merchants back into private mode so I could do some major reformatting (addition of anchor points) to avoid spamming recent activity, and when I put it back to public it became 'new' again.
   
   While this solicited some new votes, I'm not sure we want this to happen..

   That makes sense why you moved it.
   
   Maybe it makes more sense to have the date update an optional thing controlled by the author.  On the list! So then if you don't want that notification going you, you can choose that or something.

   Actually, update time will always change I think, but the announcement can be skipped. I like that better.

   I like that as well.  Letting the author control whether it goes back on the front page is a neat idea.

   Oh, it definitely won't go back to the frontpage by the author's choice. There would be an uprising...if only by me.
   
   The only thing the author can control is the "edit" tracking in the recent activity list. If somebody is editing numerous times checking stuff, that will keep it from bombing us with update notifications.
   
   To clarify my thought.
   
   When an author updates a normal sub, right now every update gets logged to the activity list and the date updated gets updated.
   What I propose is that the author has to mark the "announce" option to actually log it to the activity list. Otherwise it won't get logged. The date updated will get updated every time regardless.

   That works fine, but I still wonder about the sub getting put back on the front page after being moved into "Private" and back out again.  I think that's not such a bad idea, but I can see that it might be open to abuse.
