Any long page of content with distinct and well marked up content can benefit from a table to contents. A table of contents provides a quick way to jump down the page to the desired section. Of course you can create a table of contents manually, but it may be smart to build it dynamically on-the-fly with JavaScript.

    Yes. Please!

Experimental mode for automatic Table of Contents.

On EVERY SINGLE SUBMISSION, there will be an eyeball at the top of the submission pushed over to the right side.

Right now, if there is ANY tags of any sort, the text inside them will be put into a heading and build a ToC.

So check it out and see what you think.

    BETA with NO formatting.

Keep. Good thing. Needs some work?

    There is a good example.

    I love it!

My one suggestion is that perhaps it be given a colored background and border, much like the blockquotes do. This would make it much more distinct and require less mental gymnastics when reading the sub text.

Can you add headers in scrolls attached?  See Unseen Fortress for a submission that is an example.

The other request - any way to have the table show up by default? Again, using Unseen Fortress as an example.

Take a look. The Ideas need h tags to work.

Will see about editing the rest so it isn't as ugly.

OK, changed the format on the other things (codex/suggestions/ideas) so they didn't disrupt it so much. Now they will blend into the actual content...appropriately I think.

I'm not sure that the bottom entries are all that handy in a submission ToC, and in fact might be a smidge distracting from the main content:

    "Additional Ideas (0)
    Write your Idea
    Suggested Submissions
    Suggest a Submission"

That might just be a personal aesthetic thing, though. Thoughts?

    It is beta.

The issue is that it grabs everything in the content area. I initially had them removed but that would exclude the Idea Scroll area which would also benefit from the ToC. Added it in so valadaar could play and I see that it is very useful.

So, if you know some magic (the javascript is embedded) to exclude those portions. I am all about it!

    Just had an idea.

It would be relatively easy to exclude them by adding an "exclude-from-toc" class to them, and then modifying the JS to exclude those from the selected list. If you're groovy with that, I'll toss that together tonight.

    Sounds good.

Now that we can imbed anchors in the submission I have less call for idea scrolls being structural units.
  15. Re: Hmmm. Sub Auto Table of Contents

Ok, easier than I thought. Got rid of those extras. Now it is author content only.

I went low-tech. Just added a class around the content I wanted to be tagged and excluded those parts from it. Only two spans added, worth it!

The added benefit of having an explicit exclusion class is that then saavy users can choose how they want to manipulate their ToC. But hey, less work for me since you did it.

But they are definitely handy when others add to it through the scroll.

We may need to get more fancy with the exclusions depending on what comes up and what people want to use them for. I could see maybe on a codex to have the attached subs linked there instead of on the right menu perhaps. We shall see how it is needed. Good to know you are able to throw that together though, might come in handy yet.

Ok. Baby steps every day is my goal. Even if they are small changes I am going to do something positive to the site every night. I like today's. Turned out a lot better than I thought it would in time I had.

Let me know issues or changes needed. The embedded blockquote is a rather large issue I think. Not sure what to do about that a the moment.

Just took a look at how this affects a heading-heavy sub like The Wu Xing Beasts, and I've got to say that I really like this!  It still suffers from some minor formatting issues, but this can be really cool in time.  The major issue at the moment  is how the styles for a heading or a blockquote stay "on top" of the new table of contents, so you get lines running through them.  Might be a good idea to set the table of contents off in its own box, with maybe a different color/border.  A second, more minor nitpick, is the multiple dot icons that appear in front of a lower-level header.  I'm assuming it happens when I use an h1 then jump down to an h4 for a sub-section -- but I do that to control the font size of the selection.  Again, not a really big deal, just kinda ugly.

Overall, the added functionality is really really nice -- makes longer subs easy to scroll through.  Thanks for putting in the work!

Ah, I couldn't figure out why it did that jump with extra list bullets! That makes sense and can be fixed (by Chaosmark that is).

Formatting will slowly get fixed as we find issues as you brought up. Will use that as my newest case file to see if we can adapt it appropriately.

Glad you like it overall though!!

I agree - it seriously crushes your blockquote given the size of some of your headings.

Decreasing indent sizes would help somewhat, reducing the screen real-estate.

Putting the Table of contents in the rightmost pane would reduce the impact on submission formatting.

For maximum control, a custom tag like [TOC/] which could place anywhere in the submission and then expanded into the Table of contents might work. I've seen this approach taken with regtext.

I must be missing something about how this works because my most recent sub had H1 and H2 headers used and no ToC appeared.

Did you push the button to allow the table of contents? In the place where you can lock the sub, or make it a codex or wiki, you can check off the ToC, which would put one in there.
