Imbedded Content in submissions

Imbedded Content in submissions
#1Looking at Scras's 30_Pieces_of_Horse_Brass submission, I was thinking it would be nice if you could have imbedded anchor points so we could do such things as have a 30 with each element having its own link like comments.
So you could, for example, create a random generator that brought you to #10 Ironskin Charm
I'd like to be able to imbed within a sub stubs and the like, but have them seamless, so it does not appear that they are actually separate entities, with perhaps the exception of a little eye icon that you could follow to the individual sub.
Perhaps these could even expand/contract like a spoiler tag.
This would be more elegant then doing something like a short sub, and a pile of 'ideas' added on.
So basically, I could create 30 stubs, each fully formed and standalone, and then create a full submission and add each stub to it. The result would look like current 30s, but you now have addressable elements that can be individually edited as needed.
Perhaps [ImbedContent|] would work, where ImbedContent is a keyword indicating that instead of linking, imbed the content of the link here. The tag would not itself display, so there would be no need of a text field after the link.
The link probably should only be usable for content hosted on strolens, to avoid potential copyright issues.
You could use this if you had blocks of text you wanted to repeat in multiple submissions.
You would need to make sure recursion was not possible, since that could be bad...

Re: Imbedded Content in submissions
#2This appears to be two requests.
The first is for link-anchors, which I've often lamented not having as well. Some of the larger submissions truly would benefit from thus. AFAIK, this is just a matter of whitelisting that particular attribute of -tags in the editor configuration.
The second is for embedded content, where we have a special tag that lets us "import" content from other subs. My suggestion here is that it only work for Stubs, not for full submissions (otherwise, it would get messy). Also, would this really get used much? I can't think of a single time I've wanted to re-use a block of text from one sub to another. I don't think it would be hard to do, I'm just curious as to how often it would come in handy. Maybe I'm just missing some awesome ideas that would benefit from this capability?
Lastly, and this is purely something that came to mind for me (since Val brought it up), I'd totally love having those hideable spoiler blocks so that longer submissions can keep things more organized and visually appealing. If it would be more helpful, I could totally write up the jQuery and CSS for this particular bit, to get it functional. The only problem would be then integrating it with the editor. -
Re: Imbedded Content in submissions
#3I would also like to be able to use anchors.
As far as using includes, I remember another conversation (http://strolen.com/guild/index.php/topic,5568.msg) where we started talking about alternative ways to build longer subs using stubs. While searching for that I came across a few more conversations going back a few years on this same thing, including the original stubs request: http://strolen.com/guild/index.php/topic,3612.0.html -
Re: Imbedded Content in submissions
#4Restricting to stubs would be okay, though if only the body of a submission was brought in, I don't see how one would be messier then the other.
Personally, I would likely use it for full-paragraph style 30's since many of the elements of these type of 30's could almost stand by themselves as short submissions. Having them non-addressable within the large 30 submission makes them difficult to find individually. It does mean that I would be creating a large number of stubs, but it would be nice to have small, self-contained work items.
For other uses , one could build super-subs that visually appeared contiguous, with nothing more then whitespace and headers demarking the sections, especially when combined with the ability to collapse/hide content.
It would also make large submissions more manageable, as each section could be edited separately, with the main submission perhaps being little more then a big container of imbedded links. Snafu make you lose your updates? Only the current section would be impacted.
Whether or not allowing large subs to be built up easier is a good or bad thing, that's another discussion :).

Code-wise, it wouldn't be any messier. I was thinking in terms of what the end result is; a stub makes sense to be including in multiple places, but a full submission is normally stand-alone, and that doesn't lend itself to being inserted into another submission (formatting-wise).
Whether or not allowing large subs to be built up easier is a good or bad thing, that's another discussion :).
Nothing wrong with a source-book here and there, so long as the content is good. :D I know it would certainly make "The Bringers of Midnight" nicer-looking. I tend to take stuff that would be in sidebars in a book and make them into blockquotes, whereas with this I could make them collapsible stubs and just include them where-appropriate.
Edit:
And half an hour of hacking later, here's a minimal version of spoilers, purely awaiting better styling and integration: http://jsfiddle.net/Lp5ZW/ -
Re: Imbedded Content in submissions
#6Just got home from my "vacation" so just seeing this and ripped through it pretty quick.
Long 30s broken down.
http://strolen.com/viewing/Books is a sub I go to quite often when I am working with these kind of questions. It has everything.
Just me, but the breakup between ideas isn't that bad. The transitions aren't that abrupt, you can vote on each one separate and each have their own links. If you are working in chunks of text big enough, then this will work. On top of that if you want to make a table of contents for the ideas, on the sub page there is that link at the bottom "Idea Scroll Table of Contents Quick Copy" that gives you the strolen links to build that link list if you want.
I bring this up because I still don't like stubs for this building...unless we redo stubs again. If you do 30 stubs to bring together, that is 30 stub submissions that act as actual content on the citadel and would take over the front page and main sub areas and all that.
I would much prefer having some kind of tick box for the ideas to make those morph into something else that you describe. Then we can keep them combined in a single submissions and not have to mess with all stub issues that will come out of doing it another way. So if you wanted this in the new setup, then you tick the feature on the submission and any ideas that you put in are formatted in whatever seamless way you want. Normal ideas by others would be the same. (I don't like this either by the way, but just brainstorming). But something like that.
Additionally, you can put in target links yourself in the main submission if you so desire. The links I make for the ideas are simply ids that I put in there automated but there is nothing that is stopping you from doing it while writing the sub.
http://www.w3schools.com/html/html_links.asp
You can name the ids whatever you want and you can use the [1506#YOUR_MADE_UP_ID_HERE|text] format to link to it. The current editor even has the pop-up link editor to create them. Highlight the title (or any portion) that you want to make a target, click on the link, switch to target, name your target. Now you can use the strolen code to link direct to that.
Just some options to continue the conversation.
(And if you want the spoiler thing, I have no problem adding that, might be able to use the same code that is already on the page to hide the comments and such even. Although yours is much more elegant and easier to input.)
Anyway, my first morning home so just wanted to check a few things and run and spent more time than I should here. So will be back and see what else you came up with.

This must be something different with the new editor. I explicitly remember trying it once before and my anchors were destroyed mercilessly once I saved. I was quite sad. But hey, if we can do anchors with the new editor, I'm all sorts of happy. -
Re: Imbedded Content in submissions
#8If they were destroyed (I didn't confirm, just did a quick check of feature availability) then I will mercilessly destroy the bug that mercilessly destroys the merciless targets! Or something merciless anyway. -
Re: Imbedded Content in submissions
#9S-man: Can we indeed get the spoiler tags included? I don't much care if we use my implementation or the setup you've already got (whichever is easier, imo), but I would find it handy for a few of my submissions that are growing ridiculously long. -
Re: Imbedded Content in submissions
#10If you have the power still, use it for good and go for it. You won't get any complaints from me.

Re: Imbedded Content in submissions
#11As note, the editor still removes ids from added anchor tags sadly.
{a id="goober"}sometext{/a}
becomes
{a}sometext{/a} -
Re: Imbedded Content in submissions
#12DOH.
I am moving this to bug reports so I can work it. -
Re: Imbedded Content in submissions
#13Pop to the top. Going to throw the spoilers in really quick and see if it can be used. -
Re: Imbedded Content in submissions
#14And, by the way, we did figure out the bug and it does allow target ids now!
