  1. Free Webhosting for Strolenati

Not sure if I mentioned it publicly before but will again since I just got a great upgrade for $2 extra a month because of a Black Friday sale my host is having. Just changed plans.

So there is quite a bit of growing room on the server and I have all the hosting tools plus some extras.

It is cpanel based and comes with http://www.softaculous.com/softaculous/softwares so even if you don't know what you are doing, you can install the most popular packages with just a simple click and filling out a couple forms.

I don't promise great tech support for your software, but I will be happy to help with what I can to get you going.

Depending on your needs, we can work out the package size. Most folks probably won't need much to begin with so no worries.

You can either buy your own domain name (I would suggest namecheap.com, they are awesome and my favorite) or you can have a strolen subdomain (yourname.strolen.com). You can change the subdomain to a real domain at any time so if you want to experiment, I have no problem with that either.

Bottom line, we can figure out the details, if you want your own webpage just let me know and we can get it up and running pretty quick.

    Open offer for the Strolenati!

If I can ever get off my proverbial bottom I may speak with you again on it. Since we had a talk about it before.

This has been rising in my consciousness.  I would like to try my hand at putting together a Django/Postgre/Bootstrap based web page.  Maybe even try a HTML5 based interface of some type.  Probably use Mercurial or github for version control.

Is this possible with this offer?

I would not need/want a domain any time soon.

I'm currently using this offer, and while I wanted to try out a Django setup as well, my look-see into doing so made me think that it would be an utter pain in the arse to pull off. The setup is the typical LAMP stack, and I don't think our accounts have enough access to get Django working properly.

Postgre is likely possible, purely because it can sit as a service listening to any port you darn well please. Bootstrap and HTML5 are entirely possible (my site is currently using Bootstrap, for example), and don't depend on the server at all, just the browsers poking your page.

I'm interesting in Django as currently I'm sharpest with python.  However, I'm not married to any language.  What would be your recommendation?  PHP? Javascript?  Ruby is probably the least interesting to me.

One idea I had was to try and build a MUD using html5 as the interface - a step up from pure text.

What would I suggest using for your website, or in general? For the website, if you're just getting started on the web, I'd suggest sticking with PHP/MySQL/Apache (the traditional LAMP stack) just so that you can get familiar with the process of building a site. Most of the principles are universal, and you won't be fighting with hosting issues trying to get Django to work.

For general programming, I prefer Python. Unfortunately, I spend my days at work building PHP-sites, and I don't have any experience with Python on the web, so I can't really offer much opinion on it (beyond my very strong suspicion that it's going to be better than PHP for almost everything). I checked, and the server DOES have Python installed and working, so if you want to try to get something working there, I'd be interested in seeing the results and offering advice.

I think the key point to keep in mind is, "What do you intend to do with this site?" Do you want to set up a blog? Just have a small web-presence? Try to learn HTML and webdev? Client-server interactions? That determines what you should focus on, and what you should probably learn.

I defer to Chaos on all that, but if the server has the capability and you have the will, I will give you whatever access you like. My admins, to me, are like a trusted family and there is little courtesy I wouldn't extend.

Just let me know what you want the subdomain called and I will pop it up and you can start goofing/experimenting with whatever you wish.

The server package I have is also fully managed so if there is something we want or need to play with packages you are looking at we can always request the host to install/upgrade/change it for us if we don't want the responsibility of messing with it. I certainly don't have the comfort of doing many things but Chaos seems to be Adept so whatever you work out, I just like knowing what is going on. :)

You might consider looking at Evennia, a Python-Django based MUD server. If you're going to try getting Django and Python working on the server-space, you might as well go the whole distance and add in something to run on it.

I have some experience with Django (we use it in a limited scope on our internal network at work.) If I can lend my knowledge in any way, let me know.

Okay, my current problem installing django is this:

    1. Python version is 2.4
    2. yum no worky.
    3. no c compiler, so the source installs for python 2.7 on redhat won't compile.

    valadaar@valadaar.strolen.com [~/tmp/Django-1.4.3]# yum install gcc
CRITICAL:yum.cli:Config Error: Error accessing file for config file:///etc/yum.conf

Does not appear I have the option to install one via yum. Going to try a manual install...
