  1. Pics and formatting

    #1
So I am interested in doing some posts with pics, what would be the best way to do this? Does linking directly to the source URL count as hotlinking? i know this is bad and frowned on, plus I don't want pics I link to suddenly turn into wagging finger, stop signs, or goatse.

Also: I want to put text next to a pic, so I could have a pic, and a column of text next to it. Is this possible, or am I having teh dumb?

    Thanks

You should be able to use the editor "Insert Image" option to upload the image to the Citadel server and it should give you a link from there. Alternately, you can use one of the free image upload services, and then pull the raw image link from that. I've never encountered issues with those, though uploading to the Citadel server would still be best.

You want to make the image that you've inserted float to the left. To do so, click on the image when you've inserted it, then change the "Position" dropdown from "None" to "Left". Alternately, if you want the column of text to be on the left side of the image, change it to "Right".

    What he said. :)

You could also put the picture in a table but that will have ugly formatting involved with it. But that will put only the text you want next to it.

    much thanks guys!

I've got some ideas in my head that won't stop bouncing around and it's that sort of thing where a picture is worth about 1500 words.

When I tried inserting a pic, it became really low quality, which was a problem, because my pic contained only text, which became illegible.

I know pics auto-correct to 400pix. But how come Tundra's image looked so clear? Was it because she linked rather than uploaded?

I saved mine as a .png at 1200pix, which is the absolute maximum width.

That is a direct link to the graphic. So if you upload it somewhere else and link to it, I believe it will grow with the content area. I think I made it so it didn't go outside.

1200px is very wide. A normal 15" to 17" monitor would default to 1024px wide so that image would go across the entire screen. Most monitors are bigger than that now, but the webpage useable area is the issue.

Attach your graphic in the forum which has bigger limits and let me take a look at it.

    Okay.

Incidentally, what is the Citadel's policy on images that we didn't create/commission?  Sometimes random images on Google can inspire a whole sub, and I'd like to post links to them or upload them here, but don't want to accidentally create a problem by doing so.

I slapped it in there. Text is somewhat difficult in the best of times. If you made it the same as you did but make the text bigger but keep the width the same, it would probably show better. For that, all I did was link directly to the forum image so it is easy to replace and test a bit.

My policy. Don't get me in trouble is my policy. Most graphics have linking permissions or reposting with a link as long as you don't do any type of editing beyond size. In most cases, if you use a picture, give credit and link back, the artist generally won't sue me about it. Generally.

Hmm, thanks. It's not very big, but at least it's readable(for me at least). I think I'll keep the exerpt though for clarity. I dunno if I can make the text much bigger without the sentences cutting off weirdly though.

    Goss:

Ah, you wrote it in Papyrus.  The red letters are a little hard to pick out, at least on my monitor.

This is not currently working for me.  I think the editor may still be a little borked from the Cataclysm.  No matter how I try to set the image alignment, it reverts to centered when I save the sub (even though it appears like it's working while still on the "edit" page).  Looking at the html, it appears to lose the style tags within images (as well as align tags within blockquotes, etc).

Also, The editor bar also no longer scrolls down the page with you while you edit, making it hard to add style tags to a long work.

Grah.  I don't want to submit this until I can get the formatting right.  I'll keep working on the content until the editor is fixed, I guess, though it may end up much longer than I originally planned. :)

Try again Dossta and let me know if it works.
  15. Re: Pics and formatting

    Fixed editor too.
  16. Re: Pics and formatting

The editor is now floating down again when I scroll -- thanks!  The picture and blockquote formatting is still not sticking, though.  If it helps, I was also trying to resize a few of the images as well.
  17. Re: Pics and formatting

    #17
Hmmm. Issue is that the style attribute is a large security risk and the editor uses the style tag instead of image attributes.

Will have to look deeper at this now.
  18. Re: Pics and formatting

Many many thanks for looking into this.  I won't submit it until I'm happy with the formatting, but this just gives me more time to iron out the content.

Speaking of formatting... Has the format of the subs changed? It just seems....smaller, or something. It just seems off somehow. Or is it just me? Been reworking my lost subs, but none of them look as good as they used to...
  20. Re: Pics and formatting

Couple quick and dirty possible fixes.

You can use the align attribute: http://www.w3schools.com/tags/att_img_align.asp  (I did them all align="left"

Or you can try and use bootstraps premade class class="pull-left"  or pull-right  http://twitter.github.io/bootstrap/components.html#misc

Causes a few issues with the end and blockquotes are not perfect either, but useable.
  21. Re: Pics and formatting

    #21
We can include classes? I thought those got stripped out :)
  22. Re: Pics and formatting

    #22
Will try that right after lunch.  I did try using the align tags before, but maybe they're working now . . .
  23. Re: Pics and formatting

    #23
Oh, and can we have the option for a plain, borderless table?
  24. Re: Pics and formatting

    #24
The align tags are working now!  Still can't get image sizes to stay consistent, so I'll just resize them myself before uploading.  I don't know why the align tags aren't working in the blockquotes, but this definitely puts me one step closer :D
  25. Re: Pics and formatting

    #25
Okay, it's definately not just me. The Tab boxes don't work, and simply pressing space a few times won't align text the way I want it. The editor is awful now.
  26. Re: Pics and formatting

    #26
Its definitely not you - tabs do nothing for me either.
  27. Re: Pics and formatting

    #27
Updated it again to the latest just in case. Found a promising variable that ended up doing nothing. I am convinced it is a bug in the plugin.

When I have more time, I will continue to look at it but right now, nothing I do seems to help at all.

I'm using a bunch of tables and numbered lists in the Spouse Generator. And random words keep turning invisible. When I go in and edit, they are still there, but they won't show up. It's not even the same words every time either.

I also wrote in a line break, and it worked in the editor, but once outside, it dissappeared. Course, with code, I'm a total novice, so that might have just been a mistake on my part. I wrote to separate two separate tables. It looked like it worked inside the editor, but once out, gone.

Edit: *sigh* Doncha just hate it when it turns out it was all on your end? Stupid browser...

I am here now. If you can do an edit and point out the specific issues, I can take a look. Currently, I don't see anything that is missing or screwed up currently.

Got a Picture that keeps returning to its original size when I save the sub, it also resets the alignment. I tried putting it to the right, but it always returns to the left. Do I need to use code or something?
  31. Re: Pics and formatting

    #31
    try align="right" in the code.

You can try width="200" and height="200" in the same way to size your image.

Problem is the editor puts those wanted changes into inline styles and that is an XSS risk. The editor says it doesn't allow the author to input inline styles, but uses them with its features. However, I run all inputs through htmlpurifier which removes any of the inline styles that the editor believes are safe. I have to find a balance between safety and usability between these two things.

    So Inside the quotes of ? Like this;

    (Unaltered Original Code)

  33. Re: Pics and formatting

In theory. Adjust HxW to match your intent and we will see what happens.
  34. Re: Pics and formatting

    #34
Alignment worked, but not the resizing. Might have to resize it myself and reupload.
  35. Re: Pics and formatting

    #35
I note that you've got a wrong quote. There should be a quote directly after the link, and only one at the end of the `height="200"` portion, as follows:

  36. Re: Pics and formatting

    Chaos, I copy pasted what you wrote. But after I went out of code mode, and back in again, it had reverted to this;

And I still can't change the size, except manually and then the change won't last when I save it.
  37. Re: Pics and formatting

    #37
I just snuck into it and made the width 150 (it was 50) and it turns out how you currently see it. I also changed the inline source size to 150 just because before I saved it. I don't think that has anything to do with it though.

Not sure what is happening with it. It is on my short list. I am just in writing mode today and if I dive into the code, I will lose my inspiration.
  38. Re: Pics and formatting

    #38
Yeah even though you changed it, still the same size, it doesn't matter what you put in width or height.
  39. Re: Pics and formatting

    #39
When I first went to it, it was tiny.  After I did the change it showed up larger than the height of the paragraph so the size definitely updated for me.  Maybe a couple F5 refreshes to clear your cache perhaps?
  40. Re: Pics and formatting

Now I'm getting a headache... Stupid browser! I did f5 a whole bunch of times, in Explorer, it is still huge. In Firefox, it is tiny.  :what:
I dunno what to do... Why can't it comply to the standards set!

Okay, now I've managed to get it down to a good size in Firefox, but no matter how many times I f5 on Explorer, it remains huge. I dunno how cache works, but it obviously doesn't work like it's supposed to in Explorer... It will hopefully update later.

It seems every single problem I have on this site can be summed up with, change your browser.  :(

Also, funny thing, length works just as well as height it seems.
