New Submission Bug.

New Submission Bug.
#1I have written two new submissions today. Both on the site, without any copying or pasting.
The first one "A Tap of Luck" was fine after being submitted.
The second; "Kassy's Voting Practices" was not. Half of the submission had disappeared after submitting it. The text was all messed up. Parts of it being in bold and underlined. The rest being normal.
Then the two comments I'd posted below were also in bold.
What the F happened?
How do I retrieve the lost data, can I even retrieve it?
Gah! Rage! Anger!

Re: New Submission Bug.
#2First off, the WYSIWYG editor has issues. There's very little that Strolen can do about it, other than find an alternative editor (which will have its own set of bugs). The only way to avoid data loss is to obey the Cardinal Rule of Posting:
NEVER write your submission in the editor.
Always write your submission in word, or Google docs, or . . . heck, even NOTEPAD is a better place. That way you can save your work, and then re-paste it into the Citadel editor if bad shit happens. It can be a painful process, but software is often disagreeable :( -
Re: New Submission Bug.
#3You basically have to know html to fix it. Here is what the demon spawn editor pissed out:
Look at all the "spans" that is insane! Bold is an unclosed strong tag somewhere and it pollutes the rest of the page.
Inspired by Mourngrymn and Silveressa.
For transparency.
After spending much time on the forum and in chat, I've arrived at the conclusion that I'm not alone when it comes wondering why people voted the way they did. Why did they only vote? Why did they vote high/low on this or that submission?
Questions, questions and unfortunately no real answers. Unless they are given in the form of feedback.
On to the sub proper.
I aim to make this an understandable guide on how and why I vote the way I do.
1.0 - I don't believe I've ever needed to vote this low on any submission. If I had to dish out a 1.0 then it would only be for the following reason:
The submission is a copy of another authors work.
1.5 - This vote would be given to a submission that shows the beginnings of an idea, but needs a lot of further developement before it is ready for public consumption.
2.0 - Now we're getting somewhere. A 2.0 means that a good idea is present but could do with being expanded upon and more depth added.
2.5 - My old 'standard' score. 2.5 is neutral, neither good nor bad. Average.
3.0 - My new 'standard' score given to submissions. A 3.0 for me means that the submission contains all the elements it should.
3.5 - A 3.5 means that the submission had something about it that made it stand out to me. Extra usefulness maybe. Or perhaps it was just well written.
4.0 - 4's are given when the submission really grabs my attention. Where one or more things make it stand just a bit above the rest.
4.5 - This is reserved for those 'almost perfect' submissions that are just one stop short of excellence and pure awesomeness.
5.0 - Awesome! The submission has really struck a chord with me. Presentation, writing style, everything is perfect.
For a vote to achieve higher than a 3.0 it needs to hit one of the following criteria:
+0.5 - Usefulness: It has to be easy to understand and implement into a game.
+0.5 - Presentation: Well presented, laid out and written submissions with no grammatical errors or spelling mistakes.
+0.5 - Awesomeness: My emotional +0.5. For some reason I really like this.
+0.5 - All of the above. When all three are present it automatically gains a further +0.5.
My HoH will be given for one of three reasons:
I really liked the submission and feel it deserves something extra.
I feel that this submission has not gotten enough attention or has been updated and no one has been re-voting.
I feel that the submission should not be forgotten and all should be reminded of its greatness!
I have never issued a challenge and would only issue one if I thought that the submission should not have been published yet and still needs some major work done to it.
Or, the submission is a copy of another authors work.
Thank you for taking the time to read this ;)
THAT is a mess!
I may have to invoke http://htmlpurifier.org/ on it all and be done with it.
Tomorrow I will make an alternate version of the submission page using: http://redactorjs.com because it looks awesome. I will have to write the image saving part but that is honestly not that hard when it comes down to it but we shall see. Will invoke purifier on both of them just in case and see what happens. Sure can't be worse I suppose! -
Re: New Submission Bug.
#4Well I don't know HTML. Though now I wish I did.
I'm (after Silveressa suggested it) now using Google Chrome, which is a lot faster, maybe that had something to do with my problem.
I'll try typing it up again tomorrow. -
Re: New Submission Bug.
#5Same thing happened again.
I went back to the sub ONLY to edit in the paragraph titles, and then save it.
Result: No paragraph titles, bold underlined text at the bottom of my sub, that wasn't meant to be bold and underlined.
I clicked B U and changed the font size to 16, the I wrote the paragraph titles for the paragraphs that were still intact, saved the whole thing. Boom!
Same problem.
However with my other sub, I didn't use size 16 font. -
Re: New Submission Bug.
#6Try it again, just installed the purifier and it has corrected some horrible things I tried to do. -
Re: New Submission Bug.
#7It didn't work.
I'll leave out the underlining and keep the standard font size, will let you know if that works. -
Re: New Submission Bug.
#8Well I went back in order to edit it.
Lo and behold, the whole thing is now Bold and Underlined. -
Re: New Submission Bug.
#9You can't win. The world is against you!
I think it looks fine though. Am I missing something?
Have work today but my goal is to finish the new submissions page today and have both available for a little while to experiment. -
Re: New Submission Bug.
#10Got the basic template for the new submission page done.
http://strolen.com/submitting2/write_submission
Made some changes. Have to get the freetext autosearch working but it is ready for testing for those brave enough!
Save your sub in case you catch me when I am uploading some changes....or you could just wait till I finish but give me some comments on the setup. -
Re: New Submission Bug.
#11Done messing with it for a bit. Freetext autolookup works now.
Reminder on the freetext for those that read this, freetext is meant ONLY for stuff that can be reused. Having unique freetext is useless to the system.
Four plans left for that page (that I can think of immediately anyway)
1. Allow contributors to be added like the freetext using actual names. So you can start typing "Silver" and pick Silveressa and then keep selecting till done.
2. Make the drop downs update dynamically from the main category. So if you select "Items" it autoloads the two subcategories. And if you change it, it updates to the new one.
3. Image Upload
4. Autosave (will save as Draft - Viewable as a default I think) -
Re: New Submission Bug.
#12That looks awesome! Better organized, more functional, and it looks much cleaner. The help tool tips are great. Time to finish something so I can use it ;) -
Re: New Submission Bug.
#13Sweet!!
Just got the uploading working too! Very nice interface. Trying to figure out the thumb vs. original on it now but it works!!
Loads pictures to each individuals personal folder. Will have to figure out how to give gallery type access to them but getting the pictures there was the hard part I think! -
Re: New Submission Bug.
#14Seems to work for me. But you all know how well that turns out sometimes. I have edited and not submitted a sub yet. :)
I will be gone for the next 7 hours while I go to blissful sleep with the understanding nothing could go wrong.
I case the unfathomable happens, let me know here and I will fix whatever you broke. ;) -
Re: New Submission Bug.
#15I like the new page. Seems better organized, and I haven't encountered missing paragraphs yet. Found one bug for you though:
Went back to edit my old 30 Dragon Encounters sub. I added titles and bolded them. The boldness disappeared after I submitted, while the new titles stayed. Tried to edit it again and the boldness disappeared again. -
Re: New Submission Bug.
#16I think I fixed it. I wasn't able to do the bold, did the update and I was able to bold one of your items. Give it a try now! -
Re: New Submission Bug.
#17It's definitely fixed now. Thanks! :D -
Re: New Submission Bug.
#18Leaving up the bug report message for a couple weeks but calling this good for now! -
Re: New Submission Bug.
#19Alas, I am unable to italicize text within my stub: http://strolen.com/viewing/6867 -
Re: New Submission Bug.
#20Blockquote didn't seem to work either.

Re: New Submission Bug.
#21What I have to do is develop a "whitelist" of which html is allowed to be used. It seems I got the weird stuff but have missed the common stuff. There are multiple configurations as well so I am having to figure it out. It all goes back to htmlpurifier which will help fix it but, at the same time, has to be fully configured and it is a beast!!
It should work now but please continue to let me know and sorry for making you go back and fixing it! Once we get it nailed, it should be solid though!! -
Re: New Submission Bug.
#22Will we still be able to attach images? -
Re: New Submission Bug.
#23
Will we still be able to attach images?
You can right now, yes! One of the first things I made sure worked when I put it in. Had to write it myself so was surprised when it worked. ;) -
Re: New Submission Bug.
#24:D -
Re: New Submission Bug.
#25It appears that bold tags within a blockquote do not style correctly in Firefox. They work correctly in Chrome.
Please see http://strolen.com/viewing/6668 and search for "Notable Location" to see what I mean. -
Re: New Submission Bug.
#26Is there a current list somewhere that is not 404? -
Re: New Submission Bug.
#27I am quickly finding that Firefox is the new IE.
Taking a look at the code, it is using b instead of strong but all should still be rendering that as per normal. There is absolutely nothing I can do with it....this time. Sorry. :(
