Feature Adjustment: Advice Needed front page column filter
#1Not really a bug per se, but the Advice Needed column on the front page pulls up advice needed articles from members that haven't been active on the site for years. (2006, 2007, 2009, etc..)
Perhaps adding in a filter to only feature stuff from authors that have been active in the last 3 months or so would help make this area more useful/productive for our currently active population?

#2A good idea on the surface. Let me ponder it a bit. -
Re: Feature Adjustment: Advice Needed front page column filter
#3Agreed.
wildcorn's sub Book called Regret has been there forever. (how long until it is thrown to us?)
I too would like to see recent advice requested subs in that section. -

Given WC hasn't been active since early 2006 my guess would be forever? -
Re: Feature Adjustment: Advice Needed front page column filter
#5One of the comments gave him 6 years, 6 months, 6 days and 6 hours until we get it. I think Muro came up with that. Strolen kinda agreed to it in the comments too, iirc. -
Re: Feature Adjustment: Advice Needed front page column filter
#6Maybe put a time limit on any in advice sub. Even more like the HoH where it is in that section for a little bit and all comments give extra XP. Thinking to myself, I could actually use the same fields to track the date so it would only take some minor code changes to the HoH to incorporate the time limit on the in advice. Anything in advice wouldn't get a HoH anyway. Alos, if the author +'s the comments, maybe extra XP for that too if during the time limit to encourage comments and author involvement in the comments. I think Pieh wanted to change how it is used/described too. Might need to look at a whole revamp for it. -
Re: Feature Adjustment: Advice Needed front page column filter
#7The easy solution is to only show the most top N most recent advice requested subs, and who cares how old they are.
A more desirable solution (as far as I am concerned) would be to watch last comment timestamp and last edit timestamp and switch the submission to Private after a few weeks pass.
A more complex solution is to allow other Strolenites vote an Advice Requested sub higher or lower on the front page. This could give better recognition to a sub with more potential while pushing stagnant subs down the list and eventually off of it. The sub owner would have to resubmit his sub as Advice Requested to put it back on the list. The arguable downside of this solution is that a newly submitted Advice Requested sub would not be on the top of the Advice Requested list. To further complicated and manage this list, each Strolenite may only vote to keep one sub on the list at a time (more votes with levels allowing high ranking Strolenites to push a single sub to the very top of the Advice Requested bar by casting all their votes).
I am a professional web programmer with lots of php experience. I fully understand what I'm saying. -

and who cares how old they are.
The main issue with older ones being there is the author is no longer active on the citadel, so any advice we could offer is wasted effort/energy on our parts. They also take up space they would be better used by featuring an advice requested sub from an author that will actually read any advice given and someday (hopefully) present their in work sub as a finished product.
Another concept I had that would be even less coding work is to take any sub that's been in the "advice requested" area for more then a couple years by an author that's been inactive for at least 12-24 months + and dump it into a general "free idea archive" that any Strolenite could harvest and turn into a finished idea. (with it automatically being credited as a collaborative sub with the original author upon publishing.)
This way old, never finished ideas by long departed members would still see the light of day and those inspired by the concept could perhaps turn it into something truly memorable. -
Re: Feature Adjustment: Advice Needed front page column filter
#9There is nothing stopping anyone from creating derivative posts, but I am not in favor of 'releasing' subs, no matter how long the author has been inactive. These subs would have been created before any such possibility would have been communicated. If they want it to become a wiki-style sub, or the like, then they need to be involved in the decision.
I would prefer the 3 month filter after which subs would be set back into in-work viewable. Or, simply only list 10 of the most recently updated in-work viewable with no filter.

Re: Feature Adjustment: Advice Needed front page column filter
#10Advice may not be totally wasted on the old ones. When I upgraded the email alerts I defaulted people to 'yes' on getting comments on their own stuff so some of these comments may actually reach the author and perhaps they would visit us again. That goes the same for any sub so doesn't make need advice special or required on the older posts.
The time limit is the easiest to implement. Could even update that time limit they stay there each time a comment is posted on it to allow those with at least some action some longer time in the section.
As valadaar mentioned, any author can spin off another's submission. New sub would just link to the old one but original would stay the way it is. -

#11I THINK THIS IS A GOOD IDEA YOU SHOULD DO IT AND THE IDEA IS SO GOOD THAT I CANNOT CONTRIBUTE CONSTRUCTIVELY TO THIS DISCUSSION -

Or, simply only list 10 of the most recently updated in-work viewable with no filter.
This likes me the most except that I would prefer a filter for the home page that ONLY shows subs active in the past 3 months. We could then sort and list ALL of the advice requested subs on the /helping page with a timestamp showing the most recent activity. This way, we wouldn't lose any advice requested sub in case a member makes a comeback after 20 years, and we wouldn't have to worry about commenting on stagnant subs on the home page.

Re: Feature Adjustment: Advice Needed front page column filter
#13Quick fix for now and not sure it solves the dilemma.
I updated the query to only include those in advice subs that have a comment in the last 90 days. It doesn't change the status or do anything other than that. Still randomizes amongst them but depending on how many there are....might be the same ones all the time. Same could be said about a lot of the suggestions above so that isn't a negative in my mind. If you want something fresh, go find an in advice and comment on it, that will add it to the mix.
So the ones that lack attention get hidden away after a bit. Those that hold some interest stay longer. If an author wants some love then they update their sub and do an update comment which will bump them back into the running for at least 90 days. Each comment resets the clock.
Those that comment on in advice subs already get a 5xp bonus per comment so that incentive is still in place.
Could still use another way to better view the in advice ones that aren't in the frontpage query too. Right now sticking with the randomized in the helping page.
My other thought is that even if the author isn't here, the conversation about the idea is rarely wasted. It still gets people involved and thinking. Idea Scrolls might be an awesome addition if you have a spin on something. Instead of a comment, add an Idea. Or if you spin off, you can add your sub in suggest a submission and add a link back in the new one. So any conversation on any sub, author available or not, is a positive thing. The whole point for many things is to enjoy each other's submissions. Happy with any discussion.
