Summer Promotional for new members?

Summer Promotional for new members?
#1This idea arose while chatting with Pariah in the forums about the lack of new blood in the citadel of late, (that do more then spam the forums with self promoting drivel anyway,) and the disappearance of the new members over the past few years.
The idea is for a new member promotional that would maybe run the entire summer, where anyone level 4 or lower that makes a sub (or comments on one) earns 2-4x the Xp from it, and their subs are guaranteed to get voted on by those Strolenati that sponsor the promotion.
Those of us that "sponsor" the summer promotional do so by promising to try and vote and comment on as many of the new members subs as possible, and provide constructive commentary on their subs where appropriate to help them better integrate into the citadel community.
As Pariah suggested: "A separate box on the main page with "Recent subs by New members?"
This would help the new Strolenites get a little extra attention on their contributions and ensure their stuff doesn't fall between the cracks from the regular subs by current members.
With the Xp bonus ending at level 4 or so this bump to levels wouldn't imbalance thing much beyond giving new members a bit of a boost and incentive to contribute to the site, either with subs of their own, or at least with comments and votes on the current ones.
So what does everyone think? /Discuss -
Re: Summer Promotional for new members?
#2An interesting idea, and one that could generate some traffic around the site, the Summer tends to be a slow time at the Citadel. -
Re: Summer Promotional for new members?
#3What about some kind of "adopt-a-newbie" approach? Rather than waiting until after those first few subs are written and presented to the world, perhaps those willing could work with someone during the writing process. Getting steady feedback from a public "In Work" could be less anxiety-provoking than putting it out as a finished sub and getting their work critiqued as such. -
Re: Summer Promotional for new members?
#4I like mystic's idea of collaboration. Sort of like a sponsor of sorts. -
Re: Summer Promotional for new members?
#5Aye, it;s a great idea, perhaps it could be done in addition to the summer promotional concept? This way even those who don't have a mentor as it were (or don't want/need one) will still benefit from contributing. -
Re: Summer Promotional for new members?
#6Will we have a quest this summer? If so, we could try to make the theme well-defined and "newbie friendly". I have a few ideas in mind, but have been waiting for the quest discussion thread to pop up again. -
Re: Summer Promotional for new members?
#7I too find myself agreeing with Mystics idea of mentoring/supporting a new member. -
Re: Summer Promotional for new members?
#8This could be supported through the forum, I think, unless it really grows some traction and we need an addition to the main Citadel.
Once it gets some traction we can decide how we want to manage it. -
Re: Summer Promotional for new members?
#9What would be the best way to communicate the idea of mentoring to new members? Maybe a sticky thread under "Greetings Traveler" or "Sagely Advice" saying something like, "Post here if you want help getting started with your first sub?" -

I don't know, but I just finished mentoring clydedavis last night in chat, and now he's popping out magic systems galore.
He simply asked for help in main chat, we hopped into full chat. We chatted. He posted. Success! :D -

Actually, I think this would be an excellent idea. Perhaps on the very first login, the main page could have a special welcome message that points new users to said thread, as well as a "Major Locations" post of some kind that describes the key areas of the site they might be interested in (main page, flashchat, forums, etc.) -

#12Having it send them a pre-made PM containing the info would also be handy since they may wish to reference the information down the road or not fully pay attention during their first log in.
