RG Traynor becoming a problem?

RG Traynor becoming a problem?
#1Yesterday I was rather shocked to see him turn back up after about a year of silence up for the sole purpose of whining and down voting my single golden sub.
After this long I honestly had never expected to see him again or if he did turn back up, assumed he would put the past behind and move forward on a positive note with a new sub or two. Unfortunately he seems to be hung up on old grudges with no constructive purpose behind his return then making cheap shots. (I guess he has an obsession with reopening old wounds?)
After some thought I can't help but wonder if it would be better off if his voting privileges were revoked before he comes back in a day/week/year or whatever to take more potshots and down votes more subs (like he did to Echoes back in the day during his first "Rage Guy" incident) and cause more strife within our community before running off again?
I can't fathom any other reason for him to drop back by in such a negative manner after all this time other then to try and stir up trouble and make waves in our otherwise smoothly running community for his own perverse enjoyment.
I'm short I'm really not comfortable with the idea of someone with such an obvious grudge against citadel members abusing his voting privileges to make thinly veiled attacks against people he doesn't like on a personal level.
It's also a frustrating feeling not having some way to block the guy from being able to comment on my subs at all.
That might be an almost useful feature, to be able to block someone from commenting/voting on your subs if they're on your ignore/enemy list? Although to be honest that much coding just to deal with Rage Guy seems like too much effort compared to the ease of a smack with the ban hammer. -
Re: RG Traynor becoming a problem?
#2I understand that a downvote can be frustrating.
However, I do not think he is a problem.
I would cite http://strolen.com/viewing/Law_of_the_Hammer
His comment:
"..
sound idea, and the selection and explanation of the songs comprise a good, representative range of the genre. Like EchoMirage, though, I have a hard time figuring out how many the excerpted lyrics could possibly scan (except for a couple of the jocular lyrics, where strict scansion and meter aren't needful), and artistically they're comparatively pedestrian. I empathize with the effort; having been a lyricist and poet for decades, it's not always easy to churn out quality lyrics on demand, but the lack keeps the sub from top marks."
is in itself perfectly reasonable.
If he has voted anything less then 3.5, then you may have a case here, but with a 4.7 rating on this sub, and with 12 votes, means you have only lost 3.5 points on all of the votes cast. That means the lowest he could have voted is 2.5, which sucks.
This has happened to me on a perfect 5 sub before too. It sucks, but thats life.
I do not think we should exclude voters just because we do not like how they vote. Yes it sucks, but I think we would be worse off slamming the doors on people.

Re: RG Traynor becoming a problem?
#3The problem isn't the way he votes on subs in general, but that he's using his votes to pursue a personal vendetta against me (Just as he's done with Echo in the past)by deliberately voting low and then justifying it with his feedback.
It the kind of thing that makes me want to retaliate by nit picking his subs to death to justify a low vote on them. But that would just be playing into his hand, and cause the very drama he's attempting so I refuse out of maturity/practicality, even if it is tempting.
It's not that his votes changes the subs, rating, or how much xp it did/didn't give me, it's the principle of the matter, and that he's using votes in a manner clearly not intended by the spirit of Strolens that concerns me. (I.E to make personal attacks against someone rather then honestly review submissions.)
I looks to me like the only reason he came back was because a goggle hit reminded him of Strolens, and while here he couldn't resist taking a cheap shot at me/my subs to fuel old grudges and get a bit of vengeance/pay back. (down voting my golden was pretty much the first thing he did when he came back.)
If he'd voted and made comments on other subs by other people when he came back then I wouldn't feel singled out here. But the only thing he did aside from commenting on one of his own subs (and up voting a couple comments on another of his) was to down vote my golden and post about the sour taste still beign in his mouth. More less telling me "while I'm here take a down vote on your golden as pay back for our earlier disputes bitch" without coming right out and saying it.
Mm, somewhat prescient on my part, that I said I'd see folks in half a year. (Not that I have any intention of returning, what with the sour taste still in my mouth, but this thread turned up in a Google search of my handle. Go figure.) In any event, I'm sure the Citadel has gone on just fine without me.
He states himself he has no intention of returning, so then why did he down vote on my sub if not to pursue some personal grudge against me? It's not like he did it with the intention of rejoining Strolens or otherwise contribute.
(More importantly I wonder if he will continue to randomly turn up and down vote/ harass any of my older/newer subs if he feels he can snipe at me every few months without recourse?)

Re: RG Traynor becoming a problem?
#4Okay, but what action can/should be taken?
I'm personally not in favor of banning him but I think we need to decide something as a group.
If he repeats this behavior, my position on this could easily change though.

Re: RG Traynor becoming a problem?
#5I guess I can chime in quickly on this. I don't want this to spin up again though.
Thank you, immensely, for taking the high road and letting it go!
I don't like the idea about banning anybody or removing their option to vote.
I, personally, would love to see him come back...for the good of the site's content. He has some awesome stuff.
Yes, if he does come back, it might be a bit uncomfortable and, considering the way he left, I am quite certain that he will be extremely critical and stingy with any high votes. Notice I didn't say retaliatory although I can understand how it might feel personal, and it might be.
However, if he continues in the vein he did with the latest and nobody takes the subtle bait, I don't think it will last long. There is really nothing for us to hang our hat on as far as calling him out. If you feel slighted, this place is always the perfect place to discuss feelings about it and perhaps, in some cases, it will draw some of us out of the shadows to put our honest feelings towards a sub that we haven't commented on yet to even the keel.
If he pops back more and continues to be critical on you or others he had a spotty past with then that will become something I am willing to deal with. As long as he remains unprovoked and/or ignored, I doubt this will become an issue like it was before. Let him get a couple things out of his system and when he finds himself ignored he may come back to see if things have changed. If we continue ignoring him or treating him normal he may get over his perceived slight. Those re-won often become great cheerleaders but are also the ones that are very easy to lose again with any sudden movements.
Am I putting all this on your shoulders. Yes and no. You are in our inner circle so get the benefit of our feelings about the situation. If you were not, rest assured we would be watching your reaction to this return as hard as we would be looking at his return. Right now, there is nothing for us to do except take down the top gallants and watch the weather in case it turns nasty. We got hit with a big gust and will see if anything comes of it.
I won't discuss how he voted but I will say he most definitely did not vote a 2.5 on your sub.
I want to do all I can to continue to make you happy with the site as well but I can't slap people around without very obvious cause. It won't take much but it has to be obvious, and if he continues like he did with his latest, I will shoot him a PM with a wtf.

Re: RG Traynor becoming a problem?
#6Edit:
Good points Strolen, I guess I can't help but feel his sole low vote on my highest rated sub could be anything else then a personal attack given his lack of actual participation anywhere else on the site before or after it, and combined with his snarky comment in that thread pretty much stating he was still pissed off and bitter about the past and wasn't coming back so was just posting on mine to get back at me.
Hopefully you're right and him being ignored will make him drift off again to go pester another forum somewhere else. For my part I'll keep ignoring his subs (current and future) and with any luck he'll do the same for mine.
I have to say he's the first person I've ever had such a problem with in an online community, and can't help but wonder if somewhere else online (or off) I somehow deeply offended the guy without being aware of it at the time?
