OK, this might be more fun then I thought.

    http://www.strolen.com/forums2/

Haven't even gotten to the point to actually updating items and stuff but this is some of the stuff you can do and if we decide to do it we need to WAAAY adjust prices. Anyway.

Only thing working is the effects store, but it does the following.

When you first get on you get nothing, no avatar, no custom signature, no title. You have to use posting points to pay for the privilidge.

You can also change your name color and give it shadows and glows for a price as well.

You have to buy a title instead of just getting to put it in. You also can change your username (although I allow that on the main board it may get silly being so out in the open here).

The fun part is I can purchase the ability to change somebody elses title which I think could get out of hand and fun.

Unfortunately it is ran on posts. More posts=more points. The fun part is that we are admins and points mean nothing to us...muahahahaha

Does some other stuff I have no idea about. Just finished uploading it and now I am out of time to mess with it.

If you feel like, PLEASE feel free to play with it. In the Admin Panel under Shop Settings is the control panel for it where you can change prices and add stores and items and stuff. I will mess with it a little as I have time but I probably won't for a week or so because of military exercises that are going to put me on 12+ hour shifts for a week.

Just wanted to try it. It helped me learn a little more about the forums so I can make it a little more subtle on the viewforums pages because it does take up more room. Could probably add the payment to get stats too later and not have them automatic.

Anyway, just a toy I wanted to try.

Didn't want to turn it loose to the 'kids' right away, although they might be the better ones to test it. I am thinking they would be the ones using it the most.

Just looking to mix it up a little and have a fun community. Yes there is a serious side of the site to help, but as is mentioned, the forums are only suppose to be an addition to main site so if they get a little wierd sometimes I am not too worried as long as it doesn't become excessive. So far it has been low to moderate even though we have had(have) some odd ones it is really pretty tame and controllable.

I don't want to alienate anybody, but I also want it to be fun in discussion as well as experience.

Will these mods affect everyone or just users with IE or Netscape? Also, this seems like it's just fluff, more shiny stuff to trigger the racoon like instincts of some gamers. Do we really want more stuff like that? The stats mod already tempts them to post garbage for the sake of making their fluff increase, this would serves as another temptation.

I was thinking that an items mod would be more like links to the main site, where people would spend points buying the items that were submitted as a way of having their character have them. They could also have plots as a way of telling the adventures they've been on, and characters as a way of telling who've they met and and know. If they could attach comments to the plot they bought, they could tell a story of how thier character handled the adventure. It could end up like a story gallery, with the names of the characters who bought the plot at the bottom of the plot post, where users could click and read how that character did.

The prices could be modified by the rating of the item (as long as we don't tell nobody, it's be bad for people to be voting bad on good items to make them cheaper.) If they user got enough points, they could open up thier own shop, selling the items they have, stocking it with the people they know, and telling the legends they've heard or experienced.

That's more the kind of concept I was expecting, but with all the crossovers and links and stuff, I'm betting it would be insane to implement. I doubt there's a mod like that out there now, and making one from scratch will probally make the programmers head explode. There's just not another site like this out there.

Interesting (already been on a little spree!): with luck it might actually divert munchkins' attention from the forums and leave them free for decent discussion: it never hurts to try something out! But heed Agar's caution here. It could very easily have adverse effects. Be prepared to adapt if things get out of hand!

    ephe!

I was expecting a HELL NO out of eph. Interesting.

The pretty mods are just for IE and Netscape. Just plain colors work in Opera, but not the fancy stuff like shadow and glow. The rest should work though no problem.

And actually we can load any items we want in it to include and only be the items in the Citadel. Other sites usually have a graphic in the thread to show what they have, but for us I could easily convert it to a text description...with a link probably.

Not sure about the plots and stories, although that would be a nice new section of the forum if there were stories out there.

Maybe it would be fun to allow the person to link his name to his character as well....or maybe, if they submit their character under the name they use in the forums I could have it brought into their profile so you can read their character desription in their profile...hmmmmm

I added a couple items just to see what it would look like.

Gonna have to either get pictures, or get rid of them altogether.

Well, it looks interesting, but I'm afraid Agar may be right about it attracting serial lunatics and the random rangers. I do like his ideas about using the things in the Citadel proper for the shop. I quite like that story journal type of thing. Is there a way we could do something like that, or would the coding be a nightmare? It seems more in keeping with the purpose of the citadel. Alternatively, could we allow each person a "journal thread," to allow them to write about their adventures? I know that each person can have a personal gallery. Just random thoughts off the top of my head.

Moonhunter had a great idea to solve this, and I made CaptainPenguin a moderator (don't laugh) and gave him the responsibility for the following..

heck..Just cut and pasted from a PM to him.

Gave you Moderator control of Greetings Traveler and the Citadel Tavern.

I think you are the best one for the job and can be a great help to me as well as giving you some freedom in those well used conferences. Of course, there is also a motive on my part for this as well.

We are thinking of making one more forum for pure chat of any kind. I have no problem with it as it is but I think we can make it work better for us all if we added on more forum.

What I am looking at with this pure chat forum is to make the posts there not countable towards the post count and the stats so that those that wish can just go hog wild and not even think twice about it. And those that don't like to do the chat thing won't have to worry about missing a newbie post or discussion in the Greetings Traveler thread. There is so much action now the newbie posts get lost to the rest of us.

As you have time I would like you to go through the Greetings Traveler topics. I would like to make an effort at making the newbies topic a little more pure. Some get off topic really quickly, which is fine because that is the point of the intro, to get into the site and get to know people, but there are a few that leave the topic starter behind and move on to the netherworld. Those newbie topics that have no newbie involvement cease to be useful as an intro. As long as the thread starter is involved in the posts that is fine but once they dissappear and it still continues, that is sort of what I am talking about.

I would basically like to do one of two things to it. Doesn't matter to me which one you do.

-Use your new power to delete the posts that leave the original poster in the dust and go totally off the wall

-or use the split topic selection (looks like a pause button) at the bottom of the page. That will allow you to select each particular post that you want moved from that thread and will place it a new thread that you get to title. So basically it splits one thread into two threads, the new thread having the title and posts that you chose from the original thread. Confusing the first time with the two choices on how to split them. (you will see when you go there) I would always select the posts I wanted moved from the thread and then click on "Split Selected Posts" which will take the selected posts and make them the new post. For you it might be easier to select the posts you want to keep there and use the other choice to make a new thread out of the unselected posts.

I would also like you to try and control the Greetings Traveler threads to a point and keep them focused on the newbie so they don't get alienated.

I am going to have him come up with a Chat room name and description as well.

I have the scripts in place so that once we get the new chat room and have moved all the topics over to there then I will recount the 'true' posts and that will be their post counts and anything posted in the chat will not count.

Once that is established then there will be no leeway for crap posted anywhere else. If we find anything we can delete or use the split function and make a new thread with the out of context comments and then move them to the chat forum.

They can have their own forum to post up a storm and we won't have to worry about missing any newbie posts in the Greetings traveler.

Will help the problem if we implement the item shop as well so that crap posters don't get so many points.

I think that's a great idea. With these people, random crap is inevitable, but at least now it won't contaminate the rest of the Citadel.

I doubt if anyone is still condsidering the items thingy, but, if they are, I should point out something that I've recently encountered.

Gaia is an anime based Neopets-eque site. You get points for posting among other things, and you spend these points to buy nifty things. Sound familiar? I tell you now that in this place, with these people, doing the item thing WOULD NOT BE a Good Idea.

So, as cool as it could be, I REALLY think that we shouldn't do it. Assuming of course, that you hadn't already come to that decision.

Yeah, I deleted that forum a little bit ago.

Too much work to get going in the first place anyway, although some of it would be fun I still believe, all in all not worth it. Keep the forum concentrated on being a forum and not turning it into a game.

Thanks for that though Ria, probably helped me get it totally out of my mind.
