   I didn't have any problems with this. Here's what I did:
   
   1) Rename login_center.tpl to login_center.tpl.bak
   (This way you can easily restore it in an instant if you want to later)
   
   This will disable registration ability, but for good housekeeping, you should also
   
   2) Under Language - Section: General - PLIGG_Visual_Register
   Remove the text "register" and leave it empty
   
   This will remove the Register link from you site.
   
   If for some reason, these actions cause you problems, they are extremely easy to un-do, so there is no downside to trying it. It worked for me.
