Hide subs rating until after you vote?

Hide subs rating until after you vote?

Earlier today when deciding on my vote for a sub I caught myself second guessing my initial rating and checking to see what everyone else had rated it before casting my final vote. While not wrong per-se, this did make me question how often votes were truly from the heart, and how often they were influenced by the current subs rating?

This further led me to wonder if perhaps not being able to see a subs over all rating until after voting might encourage people to decide more for themselves rather then follow the current trend of votes?

Not sure if this would be worth the effort or not, and chalk the idea up to late night alcohol induced brainstorming.

Fairly easy to implement. Would require the approval of The Horde.

Silveressa has a point. However, the average score will still be visible, and might influence the vote still.

Well, since one can always change their vote after, you can always second guess...

Would hide the average score initially was what I thought was meant. Could change it but wondering if many would once they put their honest vote in there. Would probably still allow The Barbarian Horde to see the vote average anyway as hiding it from non-users wouldn't do much but make it  a little less useful. They could browse as BH and vote then.

Crap, this is Brainless Brainstorming, we should start a thread if this becomes a serious conversation.

Aye, that's what I meant, until you vote you can't see the piece's rating.

True, although I rarely see many people re-vote on updated subs, so I can't imagine anyone's urge to revote on a non updated one would be any greater, especially if their first one was honest.

Edit: Wouldn't it also be possible to code it so you couldn't re-vote on a piece for 24hrs (or when the votes/hoh's reset) The chances of someone doing a big enough update/overhaul to warrant a re-vote in

I like being able to gauge my votes off of what others have voted. I'm not very good at turning my opinion of a submission into a number between 1 and 5, so I often read comments are vote roughly .5 above or below the average. It depends on so many variables for me, it is hardly an exact science, but there is a bit of method to my madness and it typically helps me to be able to see what the average vote is. I also try to clearly state my opinions in the comments I leave, I don't feel like a simple number does justice to what I liked and disliked about a submission.

I vote: No, on hiding average votes.

    I concur with Pieh.

I believe that keeping a sub's rating hidden until after the vote would help me make a more honest decision at times, especially when it comes to subs with a perfect 5.  I never want to break an author's streak on a  5/5, because they are nigh impossible to get and I would feel like a bastard for ruining one.  Yet . . . sometimes I don't believe that the sub merits a 5.

However, Pieh also has a point -- it *is* useful to some people when they vote.

    This is what I propose:

    Either
    a. Make the rating hidden/unhidden based on a user's preferences.  Ergo, if Pieh and valadaar want to keep the scores viewable for them, they can, and Silveressa can keep them hidden for her.  Don't know how much work this would be, however, and the preference should be changeable.

    b. Give the choice to the author of the sub.  Can either be on a per sub or per account basis.  Example: I can choose to allow people to see the score before they vote on ALL of my submissions, or I can choose a single submission for this treatment.

I'm going with Pieh on this too, and not just because everyone else is doing it... :p

My reasoning is close to what Pieh's is, there are just some subs that I have trouble judging what it really is worth on a numeric scale, it's a skill I just don't have too much of.  On the other hand, there are times where I've looked at a score and said, this sub isn't that good/bad, and then proceeded to vote with the... well off of the herd.

If we were going to do a "Hide rating until voted" shtick, I'd say something along the lines of "for the first 96 hours after the first vote, the rating will remain hidden to everyone except the Author" and there after it was open for all to see.  But that's just my 2p.

The downside to this I can see is it may discourage voting on the piece until after the 96hrs are up by those who prefer to see the rating. Still it could be worth a try?

    I like the idea

    Either
    a. Make the rating hidden/unhidden based on a user's preferences.  Ergo, if Pieh and valadaar want to keep the scores viewable for them, they can, and Silveressa can keep them hidden for her.  Don't know how much work this would be, however, and the preference should be changeable.

Out of the two I would lean a bit more towards concept a. given it makes lets everyone change things to best suit their preference and is easiest to code. (And less likely to deter votes on a sub by those who aren't sure what to vote.)

I also thought of a third option:

    c. The subs rating remains hidden until after the vote unless a pearson clicks on the blank shield icon where the rating normally would be visible and chooses "see rating before vote" in a pop up confirmatory box. This way by default it's invis for everyone, and when anyone has trouble making a vote choice a simple click reveals the rating to help them out. (Perhaps as an added incentive to encourage people to vote their hearts offer an extra 1-3 xp or such if you comment/vote without choosing to reveal the rating?)

It's likely a real pain in the ass to code however, and not sure if it'd be worth the effort.

Oh my, a vote control debate

I would say no, leave the system as it is. I use the votes, not as a guide for casting my own votes, but as a guide for navigating the citadel, from bottom up and vica versa. What would be the point of votes if we can not see them? I do not feel that we need to control "the users that can not make their own decisions" like this, if they exist. The system is not perfect, but restraining it further might work against us and the purpose of this site. Once we hid individual votes, that opened up some doors and closed others. Do we really need another barrier like this? I would say that all the people I know on this page are mature enough to make their own decisions, even they conclude to vote the same as everybody else that decision should still be theirs to make."

Footnote: I understand the point though, votes and voting is not perfect and sometimes it can get on your nerves to think about all the mistreated subs and how it all could/should have been if we only implemented this and that. But, I believe in open systems.

    Summary:

*My main point is that we should keep votes visible(for users and BH) both before and after voting ourselves because they function as a guide alongside the summarizer and the name of the sub.

*My second point is that fixing things trough restraining information is never a good idea.

    One more thing :D

    Dossta has a valid solution.

    a. Make the rating hidden/unhidden based on a user's preferences.  Ergo, if Pieh and valadaar want to keep the scores viewable for them, they can, and Silveressa can keep them hidden for her.  Don't know how much work this would be, however, and the preference should be changeable.

Sounds like a good idea if it is fairly easy to implement. If this takes time and a lot of coding effort I would advice against it. Seriously, how many people would turn it on? One, two, three? More? (no pun intended)

The second solution does not ring true with me.

    b. Give the choice to the author of the sub.  Can either be on a per sub or per account basis.  Example: I can choose to allow people to see the score before they vote on ALL of my submissions, or I can choose a single submission for this treatment.

This would leave a lot of "empty spaces" in the citadel and the layout would look inconsistent, disorganized and confusing.

The third option by Silveressa is the best of these proposed changes, though I would prefer none of them.

The most negative drawback for me with this solution is the XP punishment for those users that decide to look at the vote before voting themselves.

Anyway, hiding votes, with or without a show vote feature sounds like a bad idea to me. But if we decides that this is the path we need to take we also need to remove the sort by rating feature. Just a reminder.

After some thought I'd have to agree with this 100% Make it an option for those that want it, (and being able to turn it off if I 'm in the mood would be nice actually) but only if it's not a lot of coding effort.

Honestly I;d rather see the die roller, shout box, and chat 100% functional before tackling this. (and see this idea implemented asap: http://strolen.com/guild/index.php/topic,4037.msg68355.html#msg68355)

    Upon review.

Making user preferences is a big deal and difficult to do. When I redo the email notifications there will be preferences in place, until then this option does not drive me to build the system for this alone.

If you choose not to see it, it will only hide it from you. The sort by rating will still work and all that. However, it will be an all or nothing thing. If you don't see it, you don't see it. When viewing a sub I can probably do a check to see if it is revealed after you vote but everywhere else it will remain hidden. I don't want the overhead of more union queries just to check every sub that comes up on a list to see if you voted on it...ya know.

Overall, I don't entirely disagree with the idea....I just don't see it being very necessary for a mass majority of folks. If it were easy, hell, why not. Doesn't take much for me to add stuff. But this one is a little deeper unless you wanted only on the viewing pages where you read them. That probably wouldn't be too difficult.
