Or perhaps the RP could be a Scifi Wild west seting.....yah I like that ill improve on it now I will I will.

Races: The races of Wild S are very broad. And yet more confined. Of course the ever popular human is around in all his many colors (no offence intended). Another very new but large races is the race of the Warrens. Warrens are a cat like humanoid with a tail and teeth and pointy ears to boot. They generaly have fur, that is unless shaved off. They tend to be not to much taller than humans but enough to talk about. They share all the atributes of a cat. Except that of wrighting themselves while falling tho, they do not have this abillity they still are a very strong race. The males of a tribe tend to be warriors or farmers, Where as the females are the cartakers builders and every other job, some strong females are warriors but very few are dew to the ruggad life. Yanurai`s or Yan's are a Humanoid type of race also, they sport a lizard like skin and a sharp and often offending tounge. All of the Yan's are born warriors and arn't satisfied with anything less then that. They make there life by killing and selling the loot. Though laking on brains they back a wholup. There skin comes in many colors but most often black. Trios the rarest of the races are beyond humans there DNA and bone strutcher sudgests that they are a lizard of some sort. They have the very unusual trait of semi-shape shifting, where as they may shape shift only for a little while before they must return to there original form. Trios like to be stealthy instead of deadly, they are the perfect theif and they profit from it. No one has ever seen the true face of a Tios for how could they tell the only distigushing feature is that of there eyes, there eyes seem to allways be changing colors so they would most likely be wearing sunglasses. The last but not least is the smaller yet nibbler Hiro's they are a decendant of the Trio's tho if asked they would decline. They are not to large about 3-4 feet maximum hieght and they woulden't have it any other way. They are fast and nibble and smart also. Tho they are easly defeated by a bullet or a sword. They resembale Small monkeys but are not. They are hair less but have a very long tail that is like a 5 arm, because like the monkey they use all there extremitys as an arm.

Weapons: Weapons range from conventional to Ream or plasma weapons.

    Melee:Sword,Dagger,Axe,Sledge Hammer,Battle axe,Whip,Throwing knife

Conventional: Rifle(lever-action), Assalte rifle(automatic), Revolver, Shotgun(leaver-action) JackHammer(Shotgun Automatic), SMG(Automatic Come in many different shapes and sizes) Minigun(automatic *RARE*)

Beam: Beam Rifle, Beam Gun, Beam Shotgun, and many more others haven't been logged yet.

Government: Just like it was back in the wild west.

Transportation: Cars, Trains, Ships, Starships, Carriers, Boats.

    Other Planets Besides earth: Yes

All Planets in wild west setting: Yes

Deadlands is a Wild West game put out by Pinnacle Entertainment Group
    http://www.peginc.com/
It uses cards rather than dice. I've only played it once and thoroughly enjoyed it. The rules system seemed simple enough, the highest card got to go first, you used up your cards to perform actions. They've also made a parallel game that is set in the near future diverged from thier altered past.

The storylines were cool. California fell into the ocean and the indians had enough magic to push back the settlers, lincoln was still shot, but came back as an undead and fought off whatever was possesing him, there's this super coal that might hold the spirits of the dead... Neat stuff.

Have you ever played Mech warrior dark age or any of those type of games?

You know the games where you have characters on bases and they take damage so you turn the base for the stats. Love those only my freind won't fight my army.
  8. Clix

You mean a Clix game? I think I am the only fan of the clix games here, besides you. After dabbling with MageKnight, I have to admit to having a weakness for HeroClix. I know all the other games, but I am not investing enough money to have a "cool force" in any of the other games.

I know that all the clix games are just watered down miniatures rules, but they can be lots of fun for beer and pretzel wargaming.

For those that have no clue what I am posting about...
    http://www.wizkidsgames.com/wk_home.asp

Clix have become a very hot commodity recently, as they have artistic, collectable, and good old fashion minatures fun all rolled into one package.

There are a dozen or so of Western Games out there. Most of them don't have a huge fanbase so they tend to fade away.

    Ones of Note:

WesternHero. There is a western sourcebook for the hero system. It was for 4th edition, but everything in the book is applicable for 5th edition hero rules.

Desperado: A very cool little game. The rules were written in that broken western drawl.

Boot Hill by TSR. The first and nearly the best western game ever created. Very old game, as it was made in the late 70s, but there are still people playing it.

Tyranosaur Tex: A sci-fi western game with dinoryders.

Now are you talking about playing a western game or making a western style/ feeling game?
  10. Wild west?

I think he means a sort of post-apocalyptic setting with a Wild West feel to it.

Wait a second, you said that Desperado was "a great little game", and then "an average game." What the hell?
  12. Bad editing while at work....

    #12
Fixed now. Deleted the average game. It was Gurps Wild West... a GURPS product I was not impressed with (1 out of 50 some odd... pretty good odds).

There is one problem with Western Games. It is not the genre, it keeps reoccuring and is always popular to a point in the public eye. It is not the mechanics, they run the same gamut as regular game mechanics. It is not the game companies, because big and small game companies have made these games. It is the campaign aspect.

Anyone can design and run a western adventure or scenario. We have all see the shows and movies, we know about what to expect, and what to do, and so we can put together a western scenario. The trick has always been... running a western campaign.

Western stories center around the character changing (hopefully growing and learning). There is only so much change a character can endure before it stops having the option to adventure.

It is keeping the game fresh, the characters intersting, and the game still a western. The tropes for a pure western game are limited and with only so many possible variations, they can only be repeated so many times before it gets old.

An aside: this is why Deadlands and X-West are great western backgrounds. They have all the western tropes and add the horror and superhero tropes respectively. They multiply the options you have and make for a longer sustainable campaign.

The most success traditional western game will not be successful because of the mechanics or somesuch, it will be successful because it will provide all the information and techniques for the GM to sustain a western campaign.

    HERESY!!!!!

Those who remember the true way of BattleTech and remember the joys of creating your own custom mechs. Once again WOTC have taken a great game and turned it to thier coprotate formula of collectible rubbish. Clix it a fine system for it's purposes, but it lobotomizes the wonderfulness of Classic BattleTech. Those who remember can find solace here:

    http://www.classicbattletech.com/

Anyhow, back to the Western topic. Instead of trying to run campaigns, why not just run one shot adventures. Does this sound familiar? The hero rides into town, has a couple of run-ins with the villian, they face off in the climax and the hero gets the girl and rides off into the sunset. Add the twists and unexpected and you've got a more classic western.

And then we create a new character and start over again?
  15. Wild west?

It sometimes happens that the girl leaves him, so the hero is lonesome again, ready for the next adventure.

Or if not, someone (his old enemy etc.) captures her... also a classic.
  16. On Topic and Off.

Been there, done that. A series of Western Oneshots does not normally fly with the several gaming troupes I have tried this with. A single oneshot or scenario, everyone is happy with. But most gamers jump from that to a campaign, not wanting what is inbetween. And to honest, I am one of them.

Agar: Wizkids is not WotC. (AND WotC is not the agent of Evil in the world). They are not even distributed by the same company.

One of the reasons classic battletech isn't out there anymore is that even though the game was successful, and the properties were licensed to books, television, video-games, and multi-user pod games (Virtual World does mech), the company could not support itself and collapsed in bankrupcy. This does not say the old game was not good and worthy of fans, but there are reasons why it is not out here anymore.
  17. Western Tropes

    #17
Just for the record: I am all for mixed genre games. In fact, I was doing horror investigation/ espionage in 1980.

So to have a mixed western game, we need to define the tropes of a western. For all those who have no idea what a trope is, it is the archetypes or rules for a genre or type of fiction. Horror and romance writers have some very specific rules and archetypes that define their genres. If it follows the rules, we recognize it for what it is. You can have a Romance, set in the old west, or A Western with a romance in it. See the difference?

This is not a comprehensive list of Western Tropes, but I do aspire.....

Frontier- Civilization has not yet reached her yet. A "Western" set in St. Louis in 1860, is not a western because you are part of the civilized world there. A Western set in Denver or Colorado City in the 1880s would not be a western because really, they were only barely frontier cities at that time.

The Wild: The frontier is a wild place, filled with nature... grand vistas, untouched lands, places no (white) (hu)man has ever seen.

The Tide of Civilization: The pressure of "civilization" and all its issues is present. Somewhere, someone wants to bring more civilization there.

Rugged Individualist: This is the John Wayne character. He is the "ideal" of the West: Strong, Rugged, Brave, Idealistic, and his "own man".

The Horse: A symbol of the West. Even if the Train was present, the Horse was how you got around. This symbol could be mutated in a mixed genre, as long as you had an equivalent.

The Hand Gun: The Personal Weapon. The sword of the era.

Gunfight/ Duel: The Climax of every great western, is the showdown between the white hat and the black hat. Even if there is a big shoot out, there is always a climactic moment where the protanonist white hat and the antagonist black hat go at it.

Fight for Justice: A western story is most often about a fight for justice, to right a wrong, to make it right, or some such. While Law might be a bit more than they want, they want justice for the wongs done.

Idealist: This is your settler, or farmer, or shop keeper. They moved out West for the opportunities to make a new life for themselves. They also like to bring civilization with them... but not too much... as then those great opportunities fade away.

Gunflighter/ Gambler/ etc who can not retire. These people are constantly pushed by their own reputation, people keep challanging them, so they can't settle down without their past coming back to haunt them.

Thoughts on this? Have I got it?

I think this site has put together a pretty good western setting.

You have to join to find the forums they use to roleplay in, but what they have is well organized and interesting...and pretty up to date.
