CHAT? What cha want?

CHAT? What cha want?
#1Do we dump the current shoutbox? Go to FlashChat? Go to something else?
I will be able to do this before I leave for Italy. I should have time next week to do one somewhat major update. Is chat where you want me to spend my time?
Do you have links to demos of what you want?
Links to software you think would work good?
Sites that do chat way cool?
Something else and chat is fine?
Give me your #1 wish for the Citadel and I will see what I can do. Chat seems to be one of those things that has been being cursed for the longest though but I need a starting point.

Re: CHAT? What cha want?
#2Personally I liked the old setup, with the shoutbox/flashchat separation, though as time has gone on this single chat has annoyed me less and less. But that's just my .02 cent. -
Re: CHAT? What cha want?
#3There has to be some new actors on the chat scene.
PHPchat has been the only really popular alternative, but that chat is ancient. -

Re: CHAT? What cha want?
#5I remember the old chat with affection. Shoutbox/flashchat separation is a nice feature because the chat is where you might want to discuss subs in work and not tell the whole citadel about your upcoming work. Shoutbox is nice for herding people into the chat
I dont know our options, but I do know that sound would be nice. It is not nice to see that somebody tried to speak to you and left while you were writing. -
Re: CHAT? What cha want?
#6MJS: As in, VoIP sound? Or just a message ding? 'cause the current chat has that. -
Re: CHAT? What cha want?
#7Chaos: Yes, I know that  I was saying that if/when we get a new chat it is an important feature to keep. Sidenote: I actually suggested that feature way back because people were missing each other all the time. -

Re: CHAT? What cha want?
#9I want my sub-profiles back! I really liked having those accounts for role-playing.
Also, separation of chat and shout is a good vote in my book. As long as they both work properly. -
Re: CHAT? What cha want?
#10So far, in my demented thinking:
1. FlashChat will make a come back.(I have some time but not enough to actually research new chat systems. FlashChat worked and is an easy integration. http://www.tufat.com/s_flash_chat_chatroom.htm
I don't necessarily like flash but the php ones are so ugly and convolted it is hard for me to accept them.
http://strolen.com/guild/chat/index.php Why is this bad again? Is it mostly because the rooms switch in the shout as well? If I can get it to remain public on the site and give the ability to go to only another couple rooms, would that be better?
2. Will get the sub profiles working again.
3. Will create a plugin for the forum to allow the [My Post's Name] Style linking in the forum identical to the main site. -
Re: CHAT? What cha want?
#11If you bring back flashchat, can it be in the old sepia color and include the custom icons of the days of old? That would rock. -
Re: CHAT? What cha want?
#12It is actually still there:
http://strolen.com/guild/tavern/
It has some issues I am told. Login I guess doesn't work for others. I can get in just fine when I am not on my netbook. I might have wrong flash or something.
I may just try and get that elder version to work and we can decide if it is still something we want. Still happy to entertain different scripts. I just have 0 time to research them. If I do research I will waste all my productivity time so am just going with something we know.
I still have room for more updates though honestly. None of those are big ones yet. -
Re: CHAT? What cha want?
#134. Going to run a quick check on comments to see if they start with a . If they do then that means I don't need to run the nl2br which has been adding extra spaces to everything. Will do same thing on the summaries of the submissions. -

Pretty please? -
Re: CHAT? What cha want?
#15Did a fix on #4 so that extra line breaks that are unintended should no longer plague the comments, scrolls, and sub summaries. Doesn't help when their are on purpose extra line breaks in the actual post. -
Re: CHAT? What cha want?

FlashChat. Not sure what the deal is with it and I am too lazy and annoyed to find out. I can't get it to work on any of my computers. I am guessing it is because it requires Adobe Flex to run. I hate the need for extra packages so immediately discarded it. Looked at a few other chat systems including the links listed and came to this conclusion. It sort of doesn't make sense for me to choose another piece of chat software when the current one is fully supported and is perfectly integrated into the forum permissions already. You may not appreciate the difficulty in creating the login integration but not having to do that myself is huge. I can't see anybody being very happy with a separate stand-alone chat client requiring a new login/password everytime.
Is the main issue with this that the shoutbox and the chat window are synced? When you change channels in the chat pop-up then it will change the shoutbox to match that channel. It seems that cookies store it so to go back to the 'default' channel "Public" you have to reset that in the chat window.
If I updated a second version of this current chat so that the shoutbox was ALWAYS the same and the chat pop-up was simply that, would that do what you really want done?
Current Chat Changes - I messed with a few things in the config.
http://strolen.com/guild/chat/index.php
Allowed registered users access to chat logs. All users should be able to view histories now: http://strolen.com/guild/chat/index.php?view=logs
Updated dice roller to do /roll better. Adds them up, can use modifiers now, default is now 1d20.
Limited the available channels to just a few.

Re: CHAT? What cha want?
#17I think I also changed it to not be blank after midnight...I think. The option to show more posts is in each person's user preferences if you bring up the pop-up chat and click on the icons on the bottom right. -

Yes, and YES. Do that and you'll have my wholehearted support. I can stand a new interface: my concern was pretty much always the sync between the two. -
Re: CHAT? What cha want?
#19That's more what I was asking for... I think I probably could've worded it better. Personally I don't care what the chat looks like, as long as it's not eye-burn green-yellow with fluorescent pink text, which I would have a slight problem with. -
Re: CHAT? What cha want?
#20OK. I think I separated the Siamese twins. It was ugly and there was much damage but it is the results that count, not the looks right?
Next on the list is the sub-account mod. -

The current sub-profiles are broke. The thread on the smf site that discusses the update is pages worth of people having issues trying to get it to work. A few has but the solution is buried amidst the forum and unfortunately I don't have a ton of time to break the forum and slowly piece it back together to get it working. I have snippets of time, not chunks. :( A new version is due out any time now and that will rebreak it. All the data is still there, it is just not updated to the current version. When the next version comes out I will give it another try.
Sorry Pieh. -

Re: CHAT? What cha want?
#23Weeellllll.....I dumped the chat we had on all the Citadel pages and replaced it with a new hosted service.
Since we didn't need them to interconnect and I want leaner page load times I figured offloading the chat service would be a nice feature...plus it will work. This is only the shoutbox though, chat services are insane and multiple instances almost impossible to find...hosted that is. So maybe we are at a happy medium?
Site shout should be stable. Big Chat works fine correct?
Put it on the right side when viewing subs and on the bottom where it has been....just cause I can. See what you think.
Yes...will get it in the forum too. -
Re: CHAT? What cha want?
#24On forum and seems to actually work. What a surprise!
Trying to stabilize the chat for valadaar!! I think this should do it. The full chat I never really mess with so it should be as normal. Any issues with it? I plan on just leaving it. -
Re: CHAT? What cha want?
#25Experimenting with the floating chat. Tell me if it sucks or if I can place it more conveniently. If I put it on the bottom you can't read the footer (which I like to do). Or I make it stable on the right...or I get rid of it and leave it on the bottom.... -
Re: CHAT? What cha want?
#26I vote for stable on the right. Floating is cool but distracts from the main content and too easily covers up other stuff. I don't have a particular reason for liking it better on the right than the bottom. It just seems easier to read. -
Re: CHAT? What cha want?
#27I didn't like that version either Mystic!
Am still playing with it and we will see what I can come up with. I currently have it half and half, stable and then follows the scrolling. That is growing on me. I propose to let that be played with for a little and see if I get hung by my thumbs. -
Re: CHAT? What cha want?
#28I actually like that it follows you. When looking at long subs or the like, you don't have to scroll up and down between the chat box and where you were reading.
The Suzod Seal o' Approval is hereby granted. -
Re: CHAT? What cha want?
#29I find it seriously annoying. At the bottom, I could use it or ignore it, as the case may be, but floating on the right it's damnably distracting. I have pop-up and script blockers to prevent things moving around on my screen that I didn't ask to move, and this might be a deterrent to users with a similar annoyance factor. If it sticks around, can there at least be a command to disable it? -
Re: CHAT? What cha want?
#30Yup hate the floating chat box....It would be great if I was in a discussion while proof reading our something, but as is it kills browsing. -
Re: CHAT? What cha want?
#31I would prefer it just being there, rather the creeping into my line of sight slowly. Or not there at all.
Generally, if I want chat + browsing, I use a second browser instance. -
Re: CHAT? What cha want?
#32I'm good with the way it is now: staying in the top right corner but not covering up any other content (images on the top, ideas at the bottom.) Less distracting and always at hand. -
Re: CHAT? What cha want?
#33My hope was to slowly revitalize flippant conversations by making it more accessible. If it was more available then quick comment in it is easier to make. I remember fondly the ability to pass links we were looking at and spurring some back and forth about random things.
For me, the big chat in a different window demands too much attention and I generally have too many other things going to concentrate on a chat. However, a simple conversation in a convenient window is much easier for me to throw in some comments and such.
However, I always bow to popular opinion so I watch this thread with great interest. I tried to stabilize it vs. the delay so am hoping that will be less invasive.
Thanks for the comments so far!! -
Re: CHAT? What cha want?
#34I use two monitors when I run two browsers - so I may not be a typical case.
-
Re: CHAT? What cha want?
#35I run 3 and still don't have space for it. ;)
Webpage, code, testing another browser or firebug or chrome developer tools or tutorials or etc
:)
I can't live with only one monitor anymore. Two is the default at work too. I get the shakes if I am stuck on a computer without now. hehe -
Re: CHAT? What cha want?
#36I have 2 at work, but at home all I have is a little netbook. It's hard enough for me to do most things without having the window full screen, and then when stuff starts following me around I suddenly have even less... I personally think that if you want it that's nice, but there should be some way for those of us that don't, or can't, should be able to turn it off. But that's just my 2 cents. -
Re: CHAT? What cha want?
#37I'll put a hide link around it this weekend...or tomorrow night. -
Re: CHAT? What cha want?
#38Thankew! -
Re: CHAT? What cha want?
#39It be hideable now.
Should the chat be available on any other pages?
