The Hammer of the Citadel speaks:
Italy is the place to be (as far as Europe is concerned).

Northern Italy (you are going to the south) is the decidely best place in europe: The food is excellent, the women are divine and the climate is beautiful. Tuscany and Firenze are particularly nice, while Venice is overcrowded and tourist weary.

Southern Italy has some mob issues and especially Naples have had a bad case of garbage overflow (see a couple years' old news concerning the matter). Pisa is known for its leaning tower, tagging and... the stench of piss. (That is actually what my friends' just returning from the city told me).

So travel north or to Rome (a wonderful city with lots of traffic), and do not judge the rest of italy based on Pisa. ;)

So... You are not going to the south. I thought of Napoli, not Pisa.

I'll go and die of shame now ;)

One thing I know for sure about the Mediterranean, which is a place I go to a lot for holiday:
Either you go to local restaurants, or you go to really expensive restaurants. Avoid tourist area restaurants at all costs!

    One example:
After landing in Malaga my wife and I went to this place called El Albero along the beach road, far outside the tourist haunts. For meagre 50 USD we drank three pints of beer each and shared the House Meat speciality, a 35 inch silver plate literally brimming with sausages, steak pieces, marinated beef and all sorts of delicacies and tapas. We also got rice and potatoes separately. For Spain that is incredibly cheap.

The next day we went to the tourist section and got a really small glass of beer each, plus a cracker with some prawns on it. This cost 50 USD as well, and the waiter nearly spat on us in the process, a truly rude and obnoxious fella.

Every place in Venice, Italy was the same, but I have a feeling we had lots of bad luck there. My wife visited the high end restaurants in Firenze, and she said it was heaven on earth. Same goes for the high end places in Rome (she travels a lot (business)).

Italy, France  and Spain: The advice is the same everywhere: Ask the locals, avoid tourist restaurants like the bubonic plague.

Don't know nothing 'bout Italy, but will probably stop there sometime. :)

Okay, I was in Venice one time, kinda nice but stank to the heavens. Other than that it's another one of those weird southern countries.

I was in Venice in the winter so was spared the worst of the smells. :) That is a short 4 hour drive. We will definitely have to figure out a meet somewhere, sometime, somehow.

    Strolencon Europe 2011 -  I'm in!

I will beg, steal or borrow enough to make it. If I'm not posted on the other side of the planet by them anyway.

I know very little about Italy though...
