Strolen, How about having a visible "Newbie" flag to the first 3-4 subs of a user. That way, you can show a user is untested and the criticism can be less vitriolic, and it is not age-related. Basically, a flag that tells us to play nice with a user until we can figure him/her out. ( Of course, once we know the user, then all hell breaks loose, and we can break out the much loved "implements of torture" thread.)

I know it is trivial to to see if a user is new, but a visual reminder next to the comment box would cool us down when we need it.

"Initiate" may also be a bit more friendly than "Newbie",

Initiate isn't as readily understandable as newbie is for international users.

Strolen will just have to weigh the possibility of ridicule against user friendliness.

Thanks for modding this to where it belongs Strolen.

Interesting idea and I am a fan of iconic identifiers of some sort. Just have no graphic skills to back up that dream.

Good idea actually... it could be a badge, that disappears after a time.

    Any recent thoughts on this?

Makes sense. Can't see a downside. Was looking for "initiate" or "newbie" synonims, but coming up empty  :(

What about a badge that is permanently attached to the first few subs of any user? Or even a counter showing what number sub it is for the particular user? I have come across subs of varying quality for longtime users and it would be helpful to see it in terms of a progression of skill over time.

Speaking as a relative newbie, I must say that I prefer honesty to "playing nice." When I was first investigating this site two things stood out for me. First was the tremendous quality of the work and second was the way that authors would incorporate criticisms to improve their subs (which I assume had an impact on the overall quality.) Obviously I understand not wanting to scare new users away, but on the other hand I am here to share my ideas and to learn. I've only written 2 subs so far, but I feel like the feedback I received has made them better than they were originally. Even before I wrote the first one, I learned a few lessons just from reading the feedback on others' subs.

    Just my 2 cents.

We do keep trying to be a little gentler while still being true, but I don't think we have mastered that by any stretch.

Your continued brainstorm on the numbering is very interesting as well! I kinda like it. I kinda like it a lot.

I do, too! Being able to view, at a glance, what number sub out of how many subs the user has would be a pretty neat function. Not sure if it should just display a sub # or if it should update to include the user's total number of subs. Like #1/100 for the first sub of a user with 100 subs. More brains!

Great concept, it lets us give the new members a little more useful feedback then otherwise, and offer a few words of encouragement.

Came up with the following to have something in place. Had this idea to put in a progressive drawing similar or to use this:

But wanted to get permission. There were a half dozen other ones I found in the little bit I looked. We still may morph to that because it is awesome.

Right now the following will be shown on the right side at the bottom of whatever menu items come up. I sort of wanted it on the left to keep it sub/author centered but was undecided. The right needed some pretties I thought.

    Opinions on it welcome!

(PS. Based on levels. Basically every 2 levels you get an upgrade till level 8 where you have the full graphic.)

Took MysticMoon's idea and moved it here for further contemplation and completion

I like the visual nature of the graphic. It kind of looks like an unfurling scroll.
