Let's get Real... or maybe not?
#1What I mean is talking about the Real world. Yes, that boring dimension called reality, outside of the computer.
Not that we would ignore it: in fact, we already do it in many places! Do we want to continue this way?
What to do about it?
1. Leave it as it is.
2. Forbid it! Thou shalt not speak of such things here!
That's a possibility, but I don't think a good one. The Iraq topic was quite interesting, for example...
3. Do it elsewhere!
We could form a partnership with some other page (or create our own), and all talk of this kind may be conveniently sent there. Not a great idea I guess.
4. Give it a place
Create a new subsection of the forum (yes, ANOTHER one), only for this kind of talk, and everything falling into this category can be simply moved there.
Iraq. Weather talk. Movie quotes. Best in the movies. Bleh and many others...
Note: Does 'Greetings Travellers' serve only to welcoming travellers, or not anymore? -
Let's get Real... or maybe not?
#2I always thought the Citadel Tavern was set up for that purpose, but I'll agree it would be nice to have a forum dedicated to roleplaying rather than having these seemingly incongruous topics cropping up right, left and centre.

Let's get Real... or maybe not?
#3I believe if we set up a seperate section for this 'reality' you speak of, it will encourage people to talk about it more, in ALL the forums. People will grip at other people about chatting in the wrong spot, things will get ugly, any distinction between the lines will dissappear.
I say keep it like it is, with the citadel tavern and the greeting traveller being used, and leave well enough alone. -
Maybe Not
#4I set up those two topics so they are able to chat about nonsense.
Granted, I didn't know talk would flow to high school girls and other such extreme nonsense, but to each their own. I have long sinced stop reading any of those threads
What I did decide by myself once I saw where they were going is that at 10,000 posts I will do a spring cleaning. I will take all those posts of pure nonsense and basically purge all the crap that is not currently being discussed.
Basically will leave the first few posts of introduction and delete all the crap afterwards. Not sure if I will go through them all and actually read them and make sure there isn't something in there or go all out. Probably will ask them and post in there thread when that happens to see how they want it handled.
Right now I have the space and the bandwidth so I am not too worried about it. -
Let's get Real... or maybe not?
#5I say keep it like it is until it gets to large to handle. I happen to like reasing those threads. Most of the time. -
Let's get Real... or maybe not?
#6I only occasionally dip into those threads and I usually become infuriated when I do. I'm not sure it's the right way to look at them to say "they're harmless because they don't take up much room", the point is that they don't really belong in an RP forum and if we could encourage people to use another message board on a different site to post that sort of thing I think it would be a boon to the Citadel.

Let's get Real... or maybe not?
#7Seems to be a good topic, if everyone has a different view on it.
I just do not read "Greetings" anymore...
My hopes go with Eph, my fears go with Agar (what if in trying to contain Chaos, we only help to spread it?)
But the 10.000 limit sounds good. -
Let's get Real... or maybe not?
#8I try and read all the new members greetings and respond as best I can.
It is something that we have to consistantly reassess. I do get worried that their inane chatter ruins some of the new members post and runs them into the ground like the rest, that may start to bother me more but I haven't looked too closely at it.
I may try to look closer at the new members posts and see if they are driven into the ground by nonsense. If too many are and they don't focus on the new member I may have to write some PMs to request that they stay focused on the new post and not on their silly conversations....for some threads that is fine, for new member introductions, not fine.
