Comments + Voting + ...of the week
#1email exchange since I was at work today....
=============
Had a some thoughts about the In Work or Help Me or whatever we are
going to call them and comments in general.
- The author of the submission will be able to identify helpful comments
somehow. Any Need Help submissions that get comments that are "blessed"
by the submission author will get extra XP and maybe some other
identification. These helpful comments could also be tracked separately
for another type of recognition of members that help other members. A
running tally board or something. Something like the level system with a
status board of who has the most "blessing" or something. Might promote
that feature a bit more and motivate people to do it.
- Voted XP given in comments will be a larger bold type so that at a
glance you can see who got comment kudos from people. Highlight that and
maybe get it used a little more to reward comments. Author's vote should
hold extra XP automatically on any comments on their submission. Give
them a little extra power to thank comments. Maybe they can choose to
give from 1 - 5Xp based on the helpfulness/usefulness of the comment.
Author can vote on all comments under their submissions with no voting
decrement.
(I realize some of this may cause comment authors "Why did he get 2Xp
and me only one" so not sure how to stop that from happening. The XP
could maybe be invisible but the + number on the post would increment 1
no matter what to show that it got a vote? And then the XP 1-5 would be
invisibly added to the commenter's total XP.) The person had three +
votes on his post (+3) but one of those was an author vote (5XP) so he
got a total of 7XP on that comment so far.
-Most popular of the day/week feature. A listing of the top 10 or so
most viewed, highest rated, most comments, etc for the week. This list
should gradually change as time goes and people hit certain submissions. -

#2reply from manfred: guessing he won't mind me popping it in...
Blessing sounds already good. Registering helpful comments by the author
is very desirable, and counting them also separately... well, why not!
Now I am not certain about the whole 1-5 interval... I wouldn't mind it,
but don't want to make the interface too complicated. Too many options
spoil the soup, or something. Plus we have to think of members, that
will vote +5 on on every other comment of their subs... it could change
things. A default (+3XP?) could be enough.
And let's not forget about the negative vote - what about those?
Will the 'Blessing' concept be married to this, ie the author gives a
plus to a comment, and it is automatically Blessed?
As for the total amount, we can
a) hide any special XP - whatever amount it is - and be done with
showing the author is happy
b) show the total plus anyway. If folks like a comment, they will 'plus'
it, even if the author doesn't/isn't around/has forgotten to. Author's
plus will only make it bigger. Let's say there's three votes, one of
them from the author (say +3) = +5 displayed. Looks decent enough, and
might still come from other users.
Author's vote itself will be hidden, as is the regular vote, and that
will hopefully cut down on any political issues. -

#3(Nope, don't mind it at all.)
Anyone has more ideas on how to make the 'plus' votes more visible, and the appreciation of a submission's author in general? -
Re: Comments + Voting + ...of the week
#4I can see the plus votes just fine, but maybe make it so you can only give a "plus" or "minus" once, but its worth more points. I hate using a whole vote for one extra XP point they probably won't notice. -
Re: Comments + Voting + ...of the week
#5You make a VERY valid point. They are definitely a balancing act that I am still not sure how to do. Will probably wing it when I start coding it and then we can change it once we start using it and see how it is being used.
