Interesting Gaming Websites
#121I just thought of a REALLY obvious image site that someone pointed out on Livejournal :
WOtC's D&D Image Gallery
http://www.wizards.com/dnd/archive.asp?x=dnd/ag,3
Also...
Renderosity
http://www.renderosity.com/
If you are willing Livejournal has many gaming communities (some for girls even!) where you can post questions and ideas to. I belong to several on both my journals. I highly recomend it as a source and I would be willing to send people codes if they are serious about joining.

Chinese History
#122Chinese History is so rich and so long, it is suitable for adapting to a fantasy realm. If you want something, not so pedestrian as a Tolkein rip off, psuedo medeval Europe, or DnD stock fantasy, here is a place to start.

#123Actually, the Three Kingdoms period has been made into at least three different long-running game series (Dynasty Warriors, Kessen, and Romance of the Three Kingdoms). -
Hey they is like us!
#124http://www.opengamingworld.com/index.htm
A nice professional looking site. They have a good idea, a place where people can get together and share ideas. That would be a great place to be. Wait, that is what Strolen is doing. The only problem with them is that they are building one world without even a common vision. Oh wait, I guess they are building your traditional DnD world.
Welcome to the Open Gaming World! This is the first RPG gaming world created by the people, for the people. The dream of this initiative is to create the first truly open gaming world that is free for everyone use.
All too often role playing game worlds developed by companies cost inordinate amounts of money and purchasing accessories and supplemental guides can be very expensive.
The mission of the Open Gaming World Group is to create the first totally free and interractive fantasy gaming world. Those who join OGW will be able to shape the geography, history, races, monsters and features of the world. -
Science!
#125Where to turn on the net for quick science bolstering
http://www.howstuffworks.com A great resource for everything from car engines to cat scans.
http://math.ucr.edu/home/baez Physics reference. The Crackpot index is useful to determine fact from fantasy science on the net.
http://www.nap.edu Online Science Books. Thick, but comprehensive.

http://www.horror.org
THE HORROR WRITERS ASSOCIATION (HWA) is a worldwide organization of writers and publishing professionals dedicated to promoting dark literature and the interests of those who write it. HWA was formed in the late 1980s with the help of many of the field's greats, including Dean Koontz, Robert McCammon, and Joe Lansdale. Today, with over 1,000 members around the globe, it is the oldest and most respected professional organization for the much-loved writers who bring you the most enjoyable sleepless nights of your life. For more about us, click here.

The Horror Screenwriters Page. A good place to start. Designing game scenarios and GMing is more like writing, shot blocking, and directing a movie than it is writing a story. This is a good place to get your feet wet in the blood of things.

Handy forum. Some gems to be found, but you have to wade through crap.
Writerswrite.com, ReadersRead.com, HowToWeb.com and Writenews.com
Associated sites.
http://www.redinkworks.com/horror_resources.htm
Some of the links are dead (no pun intended). Those that work are good.
http://www.sheerhorror.com/
You can google some more if you want. And avoid paying any money for anything on the writing sites. That is how they make their money, but what you need can be gotten for free if you search on the web long enough.
And before you say... "These are all writing sites. They have nothing to do with gaming..." GMing is a great deal like writing a story, be it book fiction or screen play. These tools, plus some story telling skills, can make you a great horror GM. Trust me on this one. I have been a horror and action horror GM for a regular campaign for about 18 years now. -

#128Constructed Languages
That will take you to a fantastic word generator.
For instance:
At the bottom of the page are three essays on constructed Dwarven, Elven, and Draconic languages.
Also of interest is the Name Generator. Lovecraftian is good for generating the names of sorcerors and the like. Tsolyanu is good if you have an old Empire of the Petal Throne book sitting around. There are real-Earth languages, to. -

#129"Door to Saturn", by Clarke Ashton Smith
This is a delightful little tale that is one of Clarke Ashton Smith's numerous additions to the Cthulhu Mythos. While this tale is not strictly related to the Cthulhu Mythos, it is still a good read. -

cool, people are linking to my website as if i'm some kind of an authority on one thing or another :) -
Why Not?
#132I understand where you are coming from. You put up a few ideas and all of a sudden, everyone thinks you are a genius in your field. But in this case, it is somewhat justified. Genius or not, it is good information in a quick easy to reference format. If I don't have my Magician's Handbook handy, your site has certain pieces of info I would need. So if people are linking to your site and referencing it, it is a good thing. Keep up the good work.

#133I take no responsibility for quality of content, but it is a good place to begin
From: Abrigon Gusiq
Subject: Gaming Links - Large?
Got the below, some duplicates, some that likely don't work any more. I tried to break them down into genres and like, but it was a large job, so did not get anywhere near done.. I recenly found out I can COPY links and sublinks in my bookmark file, and get more than just the heading, so please forgive. Somethings are likely mismarked, sorry, let me know. I likely have more that can be used for RPG/Wargaming, just have to find them and post them laters.

#139Graphic versus Description, Which is better?
Hi,
We'd like to focus your attention on the new Polish project called - The Forge.
There you will find a little outstanding and non-conventional project. This supplement is a mixture of plans and visions together with ideas for adventures connected with this place.
Supplements presented by us are unusual because of their extended graphical form and flexible description, which enable you to convert them for the needs of any system.
We hope you will find interesting the way we introduced our work to you and that it will make your sessions more attractive.
There are 3 language versions - Polish, English and German, each hidden behind small flag on the main website (www.theforge.pl).
Best regards

POINTS TO CONSIDER
VOLTAIRE - "Art must entertain and enlighten. To do only one, is a waste of time and effort."
HARLAN ELLISON - "Put everything down on paper, you can edit the crap out later."
FRANK SINATRA - "Work as if immediately after finishing the project you are going to drop dead, and it is by this one thing, and this one thing only, that you will be remembered...or forgotten."
HOWARD HAWKS - "There are five simple rules for telling a good story: you must have a scene where everybody cheers the hero, and a scene where they all boo the villain, a scene where they gasp in horror, a scene where they burst into laughter, and DON'T *$#% UP THE REST!"
ERNEST HEMINGWAY - "From page one, light a fire under the reader that is only extinguished with the words 'The End'."
ROBERT A. HEINLEIN - "The first line of a novel denotes the basic thrust of the entire work."
FAULKNER - "There is truly only one plot in all of fiction - the human heart in
conflict with itself." -
Italian Renaissance
#142Okay. I have reached my current limit of psuedo euro medieval fantasy Tolkein inspired realms. If I see another I might have a Captain Penguin like Brain Sploooge. There are so many interesting times and places that are not variations on the DnD default world (with all those critters, and races, and silly magic). Case in Point: The Italian Renaissance. Such a campaign does not have to be "historically accurate", but the campaign could be "loosely based" upon the Italian Renaissance. Here is a time that is rich in conflict. You can have war. You can have intrigue. You can have deep city adventures. You can have clerical adventures. You have social/ intellectual change. You have secret societies. There are hundreds of ruins to explore (and some are in the undercities of the places you are living, so there may be a dungeon deep beneith were your characters live). All you need to do is alter the equipment list, remove or reduce the number of nonhumans, and pare down the number/ type of monsters, add some local color, and you can have an interesting setting.
Thus I give you a few links to inspire you.
http://italy1.com/history/ ****

It's a mystery
#143http://www.mysterylist.com/
and some cute things on http://www.mysterylist.com/mystmix.htm
The Mysterylist.com
A basic reading list of classic mysteries
Classic Mysteries, Whodunnits, Impossible Crimes, Locked Room Murders, Procedurals, British Country Houses, London, Sherlock Holmes, John Dickson Carr, Spy Novels, Phantasmagorias, Supernatural Murder, Science Fiction Mysteries, Thrillers .... etc.
We can learn a great deal about how to run mysteries in games by cribbing techniques from mystery writers. This is just like us learning from horror films and movies, when running horror or supernatural action games. I like to start at this site, as it has a broad overview of the subject.
About the site
This is an admittedly opinionated and curmudgeonly site that adheres to pretty strict rules about what a mystery novel is: (a) it has to have a puzzling plot, where the clues are hidden but the reader has a chance to find them and figure out the solution, (b) it should not agonize over characters' emotional hang-ups except when they provide some motivation for the crime, (c) it should not provide a cop-out solution (i.e., the murderer is some person who never even appeared in the book, or it was all a plot by evil oriental gangs using secret passages and unknown poisons). Gangster thrillers do not apply either (although there is nothing intrinsically wrong about having gangsters in a mystery). Given those provisos, please enjoy this site, but don't complain because Mickey Spillane or Charlie Chan is left out.

Random Paper Mini's
http://users.skynet.be/gwindel/
I like these....
http://www.imagineimage.org/papergeneral.htm
http://www.penguinlabs.com/Products/Playground/
I like making cardboard squares. Each square has a top, where a Portrait is normally placesd. About 4/5s the way down, there is a horizontal line. This lower box has the character's name. This is most important when you have dozens of Mooks and thugs... (here is ninja 4, ninja 5, and ninja 6, and here is Ninja Badass 2, etc).
However, my players are seldom in "tactical" situations, where miniatures are needed. When they are in tactical sitautions, they are usually resolved fast enough that it would of taken longer to draw out the situation or just use a rough map and a few dice. -

#145http://grognard.com/
'Grognard' is slang for someone who likes playing wargames. 'Web-Grognards' therefore has a unique collection of various conflict simulation game (i.e. wargame) information, including (but not limited to) rules errata and variants, game reviews and links to relevant web sites. The emphasis is on board wargames, but miniatures, computer and card-based wargames are also covered. Many hundreds of games are covered here. Updates for Web-Grognards are normally done each Sunday. This site depends on submissions for new material, so please contribute if you can.
If you know little or nothing about wargaming or want to know more about this site please consult the Web Grognards Frequently Asked Questions page. This site uses many acronyms unfamiliar to those outside the wargaming hobby (see them at http://grognard.com/acronym.html)
This is a get back to your roots post. RPGs came from gamers running the personalities of their generals, rather than moving pieces like chess pieces. Then came the negociations, the taking on of other roles, the lone hero figure (that fought as a unit piece), and down the yellow brick road of RPGs we went....
This is a good site. Though it will not win any graphics awards, it has a huge amount of content. There are free games here (board and computer). -

There are sections on Good Roleplaying, Quotes, and a few world backgrounds for campaigns (Aliens (fuzion), Pathfinder (gurps), Necropolis (CP2020), Amythist (d20), Ship of the Line (Fuzion), Conestoga (Fuzion). There is a Tranid Codex for warhammer types. A forum is there as well. All and all some cool things to look at.
(Oh and if you like sliding racers.. there is info there as well)
Addendium: A link from this cool site that caught my attention
http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Station/8414/index.html
Lizard and Lunk is a multigenre Gurps site. I.E. lots of information that can be adapted to any game system.
Bruce's Star Trek page will get you started in a Trek campaign; it has a huge list of skills and an ever-growing list of alien races for your PCs.
Brian's Men in Black rules work as a lower-powered version of GURPS Black Ops, with equipment, weapons, and critters from the film thrown in.
Bruce's Barsoom rules let you play on Edgar Rice Burroughs's Mars in a Golden-Age space-opera adventure.
Finally, Bruce's Babylon 5 setting takes place immediately after the Earth-Minbari war and allows the characters to play as Earthforce intelligence officers.
And there are some intersting gurps links... -

In addition to being a great gamer, he is a HECK of a nice guy
I'm a freelance writer and game designer based in Austin, Texas. My published work includes six books, three boardgames, nearly two dozen roleplaying game supplements, contributions to several computer games, technical manuals, the fantasy novel Cast of Fate (TSR, 1996), and over 250 articles, reviews, columns, and stories. Last October I staged a large-scale business ethics simulation, the UT Executive Challenge, for 100+ players over three days at the University of Texas McCombs Business School. The Wall Street Journal covered the Executive Challenge in its May 10, 2004 issue.
I'm currently working on the revival of the classic 1980s roleplaying game Paranoia, to be published in August 2004 by Mongoose Publishing. I am married to writer Beth Fischi (rhymes with "whiskey"), who last year escaped the humdrum world of technical writing and is now working on several writing projects.
This site offers fiction, lots of articles, material for roleplaying games, much fan writing, my letters from Africa and elsewhere, interesting links, and contact info. -
