Re: Episode 2 - Decisions
#121"Run kid, stay safe and don't get hurt... and learn a trade" Ceres muttered to the kid.
His back vanishd into the gloom of the back alley.
"Never thought I would actually manage to catch him. Well then..."
She eyed the shanty town, and continued: "Let's scout out the place, and see what we can learn. Perhaps buy a bit of fuel..." she spoke as she saw the flicker in Riv's eyes "...before it something happens to it." -
Re: Episode 2 - Decisions
#122The kid had looked back once, a look of gratitude on his face, before he disappeared down the alley Riv indicated. Ceres could still visualize him, that hopeful look as he was put back down and let free. "Stop" Riv whispered and Ceres focused on the present. She smelled it instantly; the overpowering intense, raw smell of gas.
"How can anyone live in this smell?" Ceres whispered and spied in the direction Riv pointed. Further down the alley was a large building, its walls made up of broken sections of brick wall reinforced by tin roofing positioned upright. The roof itself seemed to be made of canvas, as was the door and shutters.
Riv pressed his back against the concrete wall of a neighbouring building, an old pre-war power house, and glimpsed inside. Two people lay in their beds in the former power house. Apparently they were sleeping, but the time of day made Riv suspect it was a more permanent kind of sleep. It was so quiet here. Too quiet. There were no sounds of kids and dogs and lovers and angry mothers like farther behind. All that existed here was that deadly smell and the sound of their breathing.
**************
They had circled around the building twice and found corpses littering the neighbouring buildings. It seemed they had all died recently, perhaps last night, and none showed any mark of struggle, though their homes had been ransacked for valuables. The Fuel Depot itself had two entrances, one back and one in front. No sounds could be heard from the inside. By the smell of it, Cancer must have let a lot of fuel run into the ground, which made no sense as fuel was a valued commodity. Either that or he had poured it into open vats or tanks, letting the fumes poison the neighbourhood.
Rolls made include medicine for Ceres (how long since the people died) and listen (Ceres and Riv) -
Re: Episode 2 - Decisions
#123"He must have some type of protection against it. Or its a trap - maybe he expects company, and poof!"
Riv was no saint, but the level of murder here shook him. Most times he killed in hot blood, and usually they deserved it. Not like this.
"You still sure you want to talk to him? ", Riv asked, realizing he was whispering....
-
Re: Episode 2 - Decisions
#124"This place is a death-trap" Ceres whispered quietly to Riv in reply, stating the obvious, then paused, assessing her options.
After a few moments of lip-chewing..."You think he'd send this whole thing up in flames to take out the two of us? I suppose a madman would, but...Cancer is also a business man, is he not?"
Ceres fingered Trollbandir's pommel absent-mindedly, and simply stood quietly now, listening for any sound, peering intently at the building and surroundings, and taking in the queitly morbid scene around her.
"If I bade Kiph go in there and scout things out, he would" she grinned momentarily. "But since the youngster is temporarily indisposed..." she eyed Riv again.
He takes what he wants, when he wants! the young kid's words echoed in Ceres mind again.
"Still want some fuel, Riv? Lets check out the back door" she said evenly.
Heading to back door. Staying alert. (and worrying, since i dont want to have Ceres blow up on my watch, before Echo returns on monday) :P -
Re: Episode 2 - Decisions
#125"what the fuck are you looking at?" Kiph suddenly mumbled, as he opened his eyes, and rubbed his bleeding forehead. Brevil Cornell was staring agape at the fatebringer, and Kiph did not know why. This made him agitated.
"Where is Ceres and Riv?" he asked, then without waiting for a reply, "Why are you staring at me?" -
Re: Episode 2 - Decisions
#126"You...You...The...Spac...No....Impossible. Impossible"
Brevil looked with a maddening intensity at the fatebringer. His eyes were wide and raving, sanity seemingly forgotten. Grabbing him by the shoulders, he brought his face closer to the bleeding boy besides him:
"Tell me...Tell me everything you know. The spacers. Your mother...Your grandfather...TELL ME! TELL ME! I NEED TO KNOW!!!"
The Willowy Brevil was now rocking the fatebringer back and forth.
"Who...Are...You? WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THE SPACERS!!! WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR MOTHER AND GRANDFATHER!!! TELL ME!"
-
Re: Episode 2 - Decisions
#127"Thought the fuel was your idea? But yes, I do."
It took concious effort not to flick out his lighter. As an afterthought, he extended the retrofitted bayonet on the end of the shotgun. If he fired it, like as not it could ignite the fuel. He'd rather do that in a planned way.
He followed Ceres as she went to the back door.
"Watch out for tripwires. I'd put some..."
-
Re: Episode 2 - Decisions
#128"To be honest, I am very tempted to have the whole of Cancer's place go up in flames" Ceres spoke, the recklessly murdered people still before her eyes. "Let's head in. I think the rat will behiding below the place, as rats most often do."
Roll Idea about where tripwires and similiar traps could be placed
Carefully, the tall mulatto pried the lock guarding the back entrance open with her massive blade, proceeding slowly as to avoid a noise that might give them away to the unwholesome occupant of the reeking depot.
"And no, Riv, talking is no longer a priority." -
Re: Episode 2 - Decisions
#129They had to put cloth to their mouth to avoid gagging for the smell was intense. The wind picked up in intensity and distant sounds were heard: A woman crying and an engine running. Focusing on the matter at hand, for Cancer might be close, Riv and Ceres entered the hut once they had made sure there were no traps.
They entered a living room, or what had once been a living room, but now crushed glass and broken bowls lay scattered on the floor and close to the walls strange, deformed "heaps" had been covered with blankets and carpets, and soaked in gasoline, emptied jerry cans thrown on the floor. A door led into another room and a hatch in the floor led down into the basement, from where the distant sounds of a running engine could be heard.
Spot hidden and idea rolls succeeded and no traps were found -
Re: Episode 2 - Decisions
#130
Riv moved over carefully to one of the heaps and carefully moved the blanket with his bayonet, feeling for the least resistence which could tell of a hidden switch or tripwire.
-
Re: Episode 2 - Decisions
#131Carefully removing one of the blankets, suspecting what was beneath, Riv was not surprised as the toe of a little boy came into sight. Removing more revealed that eight persons lay beneath - two adults and six children and youngsters. Everyone had slit throats, except a teenager girl and what must have been her mother. They had been bleeding from the groins and had been stabbed multiple times in each eye. Every corpse had been stripped nude and Ceres noted that the living room had been stripped empty of valuables.
This man is a grotesque murderer, a robber and a rapist
Riv and Ceres thought the same thoughts, a sudden gloom descending upon them. While Riv was murderous he had never witnessed such cruelty in person, though he had surely heard stories - particularly about an infamous murder rapist called "Don from Corona".
Multiple person sized -
Re: Episode 2 - Decisions
#132"I'm not interesting in talking anymore", said Riv.
-
Re: Episode 2 - Decisions
#133Riv was suddenly aware of the sound of someone approaching, quietly, barely audible, from the room next door. A soft metallic click, like a small pin changing position.
...or a safety coming off -
Re: Episode 2 - Decisions
#134Move!!!!! was Riv's only thought.
-
Re: Episode 2 - Decisions
#135"My mother was a whore. I dont remember her"
Kiph was hissing more than speaking, as his colorless, lunatic eyes sought Brevil's, trying to match the doctor's own intense, burning gaze. Strangely, Kiph did not resist Brevil's sudden "assault", rather he allowed himself to be manhandled. Between his muscle-relaxed state and his shock at the doctor's sudden madness, Kiph found himself unable to move, his nerve endings frozen in panic.
"Who are you?" he seethed. "Are you one of THEM?"
-
Re: Episode 2 - Decisions
#136Ceres was puzzled, to say the least, as Riv slipped under one of the blankets covering the corpses.
What the hell is he doing?
Then it dawned on her and she began moving towards the door. A cold voice sounded from behind and she turned just in time to see Cancer, his head now shaved bald, entering the room. The scarred and pockmarked man sneered as he lifted his compact gun, aiming at Ceres.
"Imagine that I would get visitors today! You should have told me, I could have baked something!", his voice was cold.
Then the shooting began.
Riv peeked out from behind cover in time to see Cancer emptying his magazine, Ceres desperately trying to get away. She was not fast enough, though she managed to get mostly out of the way. The rounds hammered into the tin roofing wall and wooden door sill, then hit her in the back - punching through armour, creating a dozen minute holes.
Her horrible scream was cut short as she was thrown off her feet, face down into the sand and dust outside the fuel depot.
"I'd fuck you if you weren't so ugly, dear!", Cancer said, putting his gun on down on the table by the doorway. Picking up a butchers knife from a drawer he laughed. "But you don't have to worry. I still got something for you, sweetie!"
Riv reacted quickly and was able to hide under the carpets, Cancers eyes falling on the fleeing Ceres. Cancer surprised the party and won initiative, though now Riv can react. Ceres is down for the fight having suffered severe trauma. She managed a partial success in her dodge and only half the bullets hit. Furthermore half again hit the wall so only 12 bullets hit her chest plage, which withstood some of the damage. Ceres is not dead, but she is seconds from death.
-
Re: Episode 2 - Decisions
#137And,... Act!
Riv will launch himself at Cancer, using his bayonet like a lance (hopefully, using his mass he will breach buddies shield.) And once the bayonet makes contact, he will fire the shotgun, unworried about damage to the bayonet or weapon.
No Battle cry preceeded his charge, simply silent fury.
-

Re: Episode 2 - Decisions
#139Uhm. Exciting. I shall bleed on him profusely should he come too close. -
Re: Episode 2 - Decisions
#140Lungs punctured, blood pouring out of nostrils and mouth, Ceres struggled to make sense of it all. Her vision was blurry and she tried to claw her way to safety, to Kiph, however mad that sounded. It did not matter now; she had to get somewhere safe. It was all she could think about.
Riv lunged silently, fiercly, his shotgun mounted bayonet in front like a spear. He hit Cancer, but was stopped an inch from Cancer's back, just below the neck, a jolt suddenly tearing through his body, creases of blue fire erupting along the surface of some hitherto unseen shield, melting the tip of the bayonet as Riv pushed ever deeper.
"Curses! You motherfucking double dealing son of a pig!" Cancer screamed as he twisted about, the bayonet scraping the surface of the shield like a shark's fin, creating ripples of blue fire as it did so. The butcher's knife swung in a silvery arc, aiming for Riv's face, as Riv pulled the trigger, a silent explosion of blue triggering simultanously with the thunder of gunfire.
Ceres could see her now, aunt Red May, opening her arms in a gesture of welcome. And there was her grandfather too, lifting his powerful arm to strike at the glowing steel once more.
Cancer was thrown out the doorway, his body spinning, then bouncing as he hit the ground behind Ceres. Cancer screamed horribly, a gaping wound in his back. He was still alive, somehow, miraculously, his eyes rolling into the back of his head.
Riv had lost the shotgun, it was now on the floor between his legs, as he held both arms against the wooden door frame, vomiting intensly, the contents of his stomach escaping through mouth and nostril alike. As he fired the shotgun an intense jolt had torn through his body, and on reflex he emptied his stomach on Ceres' legs.
Riv melee roll: 48 (Bayonet use spear base chance) 80 + 10 (surprised during combat) + 10 (behind) + 10 (prepared attack) = Hit.
Bayonet damage = 1D6+1 +1D4(Str bonus) = 3 + 1 + 3 = 7, not enough to breach the shield, but he then fires his shotgun.
Shotgun damage = 4D6 = 12.
The shield is breached and Cancer suffers 7 points of damage in his upper back. He is out of the fight.
Also, Ceres is hovering on death's door. The healing nanites are her last hope. If Riv wants to help he has to act quickly.
-
Re: Episode 2 - Decisions
#141The echo of the shots resembled nothing more than the beat of waves against a steep sea shore - even though she never been to one, Ceres knew it had to sound somehow like this. Resonant, distorted, everpresent, all-encompassing. 'Lame to die this way, girl' she thought as she struggled to reach one of her nanite packs. 'Damn these huge hands of mine, so heavy and clumsy' she thought even as time flowed like honey.
Mai-Ling spoke to her, calling, beckoning, but Ceres did not wish to leave, not yet. All before seemed to be in vain, pointless. 'Have you trudged through vasteland only to rot in a forgotten hole?' She had to give it sense. To learn. To become wise. To help. Ones such as Mai-Ling. Even though she never saw her face.
"Finish the bastard" Ceres spoke through blood and pain. Hopefully, Riv would listen.
Those distant hands of hers, so far away as to seem to belong to somebody else, almost did not feel what they ran across, yet she hoped they would find her sole hope. -

Re: Episode 2 - Decisions
#143Cancer never saw what was coming, for his eyed had rolled back in his head and only the whites showed. He was shaking uncontrollably as Riv fired, reducing much of his face to moist pulp. The second blast reduced what was left, leaving only shred pieces of meat and bone above the neck. The shield did not seem to offer any protection anymore.
Ceres coughed, spat and cursed as she freed her lungs of blood, the nanites working their magic. She could even feel the bullets being pushed out of her body, a truly alien experience, and winced as the first one plopped out, clinging against her chest plate as it did so. Only minutes later would she trace her fingers over the entry area, not even feeling a single scar from her frightening experience. A total of 8 bullets had penetrated the armour, three of them inflicting major damage. The nanites were life savers, but her supply was dwindling fast. -
Re: Episode 2 - Decisions
#144"I guess that was an Invasive procedure." quipped Riv. Looking over and seeing Ceres seemed in much better shape, he sighed and then carefully began searching the dead manic. Ever paranoid, he watched out for booby traps. People like this took no end of trouble to protect themselves from theft - even his wallet or coin pouch might contain a hidden needle.
And of course, he was listening carefully. As unlikely as it might be, Cancer might have had friends.
-
Re: Episode 2 - Decisions
#145Sitting up, Ceres looked around in the charnelhouse that was Cancer's hideout.
"Next time, I will know better and stand just behind the door" she commented. "Thank you Riv - for giving me the chance to have any 'next times'... I would kiss you if, a) I was any good at it, b) I was your type and c) I was certain that Kiph would not somehow find out and stab us both in the back soon thereafter."
Spitting out a little blood, she stood again, feeling a draft where her plate was riddled with holes. "You search the maniac, I will look around for anyone who might have survived, or any chance to learn whether this bastard operated alone."
By all that was socially just, she learned a lesson that day.
Search the house. Grab fuel and anything useful. Check for survivors. -
Re: Episode 2 - Decisions
#146"You know, it is kind of too bad I destroyed his head - it might have been worth something to someone", said Riv wistfully as he checked over the headless corpse. "No prob. If yah had gotten killed, I'd have a hard time explaining that to Kiph. Again." Riv grinned.
- Add to list. Toarch the d**n place when we are clear...
Loot, Pillage and THEN burn. Remember that Riv! It's important...
-
Re: Episode 2 - Decisions
#147Riv carefully examined the carcass and found the following:
- A steel belt with joints every tenth centimeter. AT-Reid-5 is engraved into a flip panel that reveals a touchpad and a small screen. Further studies also reveal small replaceable batteries. The power gauge indicates the batteries are flat.
- A steel ring on each hand, AT-Reid-5 engraved on the inside of each ring.
- Steel bracers on each hand. Yep: AT-Reid-5.
- Steel, leather and kevlar ankle bracers. AT-Reid-5.
- Brown webbing pouch containing 103 severed ears with name tags on.
- Left leather combat glove (+2 fist damage)
- 3 x P90 magazine clips, with 50 rounds each (magnetically attached to the steel belt).
Also, inside the brain and skull pulp are two torn and twisted steel ear rings.
(Plus P90 and combat knife inside the building)
While Riv looted the dead Cancer, Ceres examined the fuel depot. Beside the dead family she found four ladies of the night, heavily mutilated and abused. Each and every one was dead, the last one still warm. The mutant doctor had never witnessed such wanton murder. The late cancer seemed particularly fond of abusing women.
Ceres quietly climbed down the hatch, following a ladder that led into a pre-war garage basement. A black pick-up had been filled with jerry cans and the engine was still running. The garage was filled with tools and spare tires, as well as emptied jerry cans. There could be no mistake; Cancer was planning to leave with a bang. The explosion would blow up the neighbourhood.
The pick up was luxuriously decorated, with black leather seats and crimson velvet interior. Furry dice hang from the rearview mirror. In a bag in the passenger seat was stuff Cancer had stolen from his victims:
220 rounds .22 caliber ammo
13 ceramic flasks of moonshine (1 metric litre)
2 teddy bears, semen baked
1 mutton
After having driven the pick-up out of the hidden garage, Riv ignited the fuel and jumped into the passenger seat.
A huge explosion shook Neon as Ceres and Riv drove up alongside Brevil and Kiph outside the Dragon. -
Re: Episode 2 - Decisions
#148- Teddy bears left with the inferno! Ugh -
Re: Episode 2 - Decisions
#149Well, you are all together. The ball is in your courtyard, guys -
Re: Episode 2 - Decisions
#150Riv looked back, thinking about the dreadful place. It was just as well that none would know what had happened in that cursed place, and then a thought struck him...
"Wonder if we can find that kid again. I have an idea - it might be useful, since we are the survivors, to let someone know what .. happened."
-
Re: Episode 2 - Decisions
#151Neon had turned into an inferno and people ran screaming and wailing in the streets. Soon the smoke was thick, for a breeze blew from the burning district towards the Dragon Tavern. Leaving the others behind, Riv searched the streets for the kid. Some minutes later the kid was still not found. -
Re: Episode 2 - Decisions
#152While shaking the young fatebringer, Brevil had been vaguely aware of the commotion happening in the background. The shots from both Ceres, Riv and Cancer echoed faintly above the hum of the little town, but he simply ignored them. The boy's answer was strangely familiar. The way the drugged fighter had mouthed "THEM" made Brevil realize exactly what he was doing.
God...No... Why, Why did I loose control like this again. Remember Her... Remember what happened...
Releasing his grip slowly and looking at his hands, he asked slowly: "You mean the spacers, don't you?".
Yes, He must.... What else could possibly drive me to attack him so... I can't quite believe I acted this way.
"Listen, Kiph, I'm...sorry...I get a bit... edgy whenever the spacers are mentioned. I can tell you straight away that I'm not one of them. I...I shouldn't have acted like that. Please just tell me what you remember. just tell me what you know and we'll never have to talk about it again. "
And then, just as the Black pick-up truck slid besides them, all hell broke loose.
Brevil barely had time to turn to the pickup's side and saw Riv bolting out the door. He then noticed Ceres, paler than usual, in the black car's seat.
"What the hell was that?" he shouted to her. -
Re: Episode 2 - Decisions
#153"A little mistake on our part, Brevil; and malevolence on someone else's part - gladly, fae allowed us to escape some fuel and a pickup richer, and leaving this town one monster in human skin poorer. If I only knew more... anyway, let us move - and look out for the kid we spoke to, just in case."
"Sorry to interrup your chat with Kiph, but I want you behind the other wheel, asap." -
Re: Episode 2 - Decisions
#154Riv came back breathless, and still somewhat euphoric. "Couldn't find the kid. Guess rumors and tall tales will have to do. I think we better book out. Quick."
It was unfortunate they had to leave so soon, Riv would have liked to trade for some shotgun shells. Somethings could'nt be helped.
-
Re: Episode 2 - Decisions
#155Kiph was contemplating Brevil's words when he first noticed the fire erupting across through the streets of Neon, in the rear view mirror.
Seeing Ceres pull up in some black vehicle and having heard her quick exchange with Cornell, he sprung into action, which in this particular case, meant that Kiph quickly jumped behind the wheel.
No way in hell this Brevil bastard was going to take driving duties away from the Kiphster. No way! Kiph muttered to himself as he revved the engine and started the army truck.
Besides he thought, unaffected by the raging flames and occcasional 'booms' spreading across town, he needed time to think. Brevil had accomplished what few had before. He got Kiph to thinking, thinking hard.
Kiph hit the gas, and steered the unwieldly behemoth, which was for some reason, suddenly missing steering fluid, along the spreading chaos of Neon's streets, following Ceres' new mode of transportation, and humming some sing-song he himself did not recognize.
Next stop Bleakwood. In the meantime, Kiph kept his eyes peeled for some youngster, as per Ceres' instructions.
He managed to glance over at Brevil again. Soon, Kiph thought, there would be a reckoning. -
Re: Episode 2 - Decisions
#156Underground Corridor
The dark figure carefully stepped across the floor, not making a single sound as he did so. The monsters' screaming had abated, though he still heard occasional sounds. Expert fingers flickered across the paper, drawing the dead G'Kraun with expert precision. A sudden noise made Ralkhara freeze; an entire minute passed before the cautious nomad moved again.
He delicately put the drawing into the bag, and focused on his mission.
This has better be worth it...
Neon
Two days later
A kid waded through the ashes when firm hands grabbed him by the shoulder, halting his advance.
"What do you want with me, sir?", the boy said, fear in his voice.
The Pastor crouched down, showing the boy some ammo, looking him in the eyes.
"Now, listen dear child, I need some info and I think you can help me with that. From the look of things, I think an old business associate of mine may have paid this place a visit"
Meanwhile, on the interstate
"Damn, Ceres, I don't like the look of this. I don't like it at all!", Riv cursed, spitting on the floor as he finished speaking.
The pickup was in front, the army truck behind; Kiph and Brevil seeing the same thing as the pair in front.
Ceres looked left, then right. Everywhere she saw the same: The horizon was covered by them; men and women marching. From the look of them they were wastelanders, their skin burnt from the sun, longbows slung over their shoulders and spears carried like walking sticks.
"I just hope", Ceres said, "that they ain't looking for trouble".
-
Re: Episode 2 - Decisions
#157It was an entire nation marching, and as they approached, the party noticed that there were many wounded. Their ranks parted, allowing the cars to drive through.
"Nathrang la kipparo!", a wastelander cried.
"Nathrang la sansao!", the others replied, their united voices like rolling thunder.
There was sadness in their eyes, a look of defeat on their faces. And the River Train Tribes marched on. -
Re: Episode 2 - Decisions
#158In the Wasteland
The fifth day after leaving Neon
The wreckage of the space craft was still burning as they drove past. Ceres looked at her geiger counter; the readings were off the charts, resulting in a hasted departure. They had seen it fall from the night sky the evening before, but up close they seriously doubted they would find anything of value, though they could never be sure. If anything, these spacers made excellent equipment.
As for what, or who, had shot down the craft, they could not know, but from the look of it this was a fighter space craft, and not anything like the huge transporter that had plowed through Bleak Wood a month earlier.
-
Re: Episode 2 - Decisions
#159Campfire
Evening before reaching Bleak Wood,
Seventh day after leaving Neon
They had reached the highest peak of Blue Ridge, where the ancients had raised a tower that was no longer occupied. In the olden days, the first years after the war, it had been a bandit infested stronghold, but nowadays the radio tower rusted alone in its majestic glory, a navigational beacon for the wanderers from the desert.
The wind battered against the concrete walls, and created a piercing, wailing sound as the wind was channeled through the old radio outpost. Inside Riv had made a fire and sat transfixed, eyeing the flames.
Brevil was studying the loot, in particular the belt, bracelets and rings that Riv had plucked from the corpse of the man known as Cancer. "It is recharging... Must be some kind of recharging device, based on kinetic energy perhaps..." the scientist said, continuing his study.
Kiph laid on his back, flat down, as Ceres inspected his wounds once again, as she had the entire journey.
"You are healing quickly, Kiph", she said.
Okay, dark_dragon, you got your campfire scenario right here!
-
Re: Episode 2 - Decisions
#160"Cool. I figured we'd have to jack some batteries somewhere."
"Now, for my share, I want that shield device - it looks a damn sight lighter then this plate I'm wearing. Can any of you use the guns?"
Riv didn't look up as he spoke - he was rooting through the bag of ears, looking for names he recognized. Strangely enough, as he finished reading each nametag, he spoke a short prayer under his breath, and pitched the ear into the campfire..
"Oh, and I want enough of the ammo to buy some more shells should opportunity arise. And get this fixed..."
