Yes yes yes, I KNOW that we're an idea guild, and not a game-builder site like The Forge. That doesn't change the fact that as GMs, our games must run with mechanics, whether those of our own devising or those we bought for insane amounts of cash.

I propose that we make a separate sub-board within the Forum for Mechanics, both for fine-tuning and outright creation. I don't think a submission-category would be appropriate for it, but a board would allow for discourse and improvement of individual mechanic systems that we either wish to use within our settings, or just test out as random thoughts. After all, unless you're using a completely freeform system, you need to have some form of mechanics and rules...

The floor is now open for discussion! *hits gavel*

We can treat it like we used to treat worlds. If there are enough active threads that are going to make it worth it, then we can do it. If there are only a few small discussions, it may not be enough to start its own.

We may want to rethink some of the other forums as well and perhaps rename them allowing for a broader range of topics under one heading.

So until such a time as we need a forum for mechanics, perhaps it should go within the Gaming Tavern?

Game Mechanics could be applied in the articles section at this time. Perhaps with the free-text of Game Mechanics. That way we could find them later.

We actually have a full game system in the Catacombs. Okay, i wrote it, but I know it is there. We actually have some mechanics in the Black Christmas threads too.

The problem with a game mechanics, specifically, is that we are a system non specific site. So any mechanic we would have to be either

    1) written entirely for themselves, self contained. This works for entire game systems. This satisfactory to the site.

    2) Add On: The mechanic can be added to any game system. This works well for one plug in system. Ideally, the plug in would be adapted to many game mechanics (if you are using a 1d10, d20 task, multi die check).

    3) Mechanics for a specific system. This falls into two categories.
        a) Direct system: We have had a couple of these, mostly in the catacombs now. they were DnD/ D20 classes. They were... well abused in text. I think they would be "badly recieved".
        b) Indirect system: They were basically a specific game system piece, with a half step back on the mechanics. They are more neutral, but the system shows through.  Depending on the piece, this can be either way.

Okay so now that we have a catgegory system for this, what do we accept?

IMO: 1 and 2 are acceptable.  3a is right off. 3b... I would say no, but this is hard to judge.

For good or bad, I have absolutely no opinion on this.
