Codices in the Brave New World
#1I think everyone can agree that Codices are a great idea but can get really unwieldy. So here is the ideas on how to fix them in 3.0
They are mostly like they are today and have the same function. They should look the same in basics.
They will have a title page (king page for Strolen). That will have the summary and the explanation.
1) The Codex list (Table of Contents for our book metaphors) will be alphabetical. So as you add a submission (or stub), it will appear in the codex list in an appropriate spot.
2) Rather than have all the submissions appear (in parts) down the page (and this gets pretty gnarly after about 10 submissions), only one will show. It will appear below the codex title, much like they do now. However, only one will show. It will show all of the submission.
3) Each submission in the codex list (table of contents) will have two links to it a preview and a goto
Magic Item #3 preview goto
Preview will have the submission appear below the Codex (Title Page/ King Page)
Goto will replace the codex submission with the submission you are going to. That page, and all its links and link backs, and things will appear.
Each submission will have a link back to any codex it is part of. So if you goto a submission, you can go back to it with a click (and not a back up.. if you had commented or voted or such).
Now we did not discuss ajax, but .... We could have ajax step in and dynamically load each selected codex submission underneath the TOC. Each time you click on this link the bottom submission reloads without a full page refresh. Same thing, different technology, maybe we will save a few miliseconds in loading.
Also note: That many of our scrolls that are comprised of stub like postings, will become codices with stubs. This makes them alphabetical and easy to access.
These are the basics.... have we missed anything?
Note: the graphic layouts of all submissions will need to be finalized before any placements can be determined.

Re: Codices in the Brave New World
#3Instead of only showing one, perhaps one would have the option of showing just the summaries?
Also, I'm not in favor of making the Codex List alphabetical - though this is better then the current arrangement.
Ideally the creator of the codex could select the order of the components.
I'm thinking that a module could be built using multiple subs and the linked subs will not be in order of use. A minor detail, but one which I ran into with the current quest.

#4I'm not in favor of making the Codex List alphabetical - though this is better then the current arrangement. Ideally the creator of the codex could select the order of the components.
This is the way The Setting (Worlds) Codices will be. You will be able to order them anyway you want (and add and delete them without encouring ep penalties). You will also be able to add descriptive elements to the list through the use of a special kind of stub.
If you want a different order in another type of submission, all you need to do is name link square bracket name of sub close square bracket and you can create a list in any order or just link them inline/ intext. This is what I do.
In most codices, submissions are just added and added, so setting the default as alpha (except for settings) is the most useful for the most posts. Also remember that many scrolls are going to become codices in 3.0 full of stubs (made from the scroll entries). -
Re: Codices in the Brave New World
#5If there is a way to choose the sorting of a codex, and the old stuff won't be overwritten, more sorting options are welcome. The only question is what will be the default.

Re: Codices in the Brave New World
#6The default for codices will be alphabetical. It just makes more sense than a random jumble of posts.
The sorting that valadaar mentions will be contained in the folios where things will be created for purpose and the order will be more necessary.
For a codice, the main point of a codex (correct me if I am wrong) is simply to collect like posts in a single place for easy browsing. That is its singular purpose.
(think of each thing we are doing as a coding class - it should do one thing, and one thing well)
A Folio will be the collection of posts into a module, or walk through a time frame, or move geographically through somewhere. A codex, on the other hand, is just a list.
The current quest would probably benefit from the Folio way of things. (now I go to the folio thread to ensure I am not mistaken by this vision) -
Re: Codices in the Brave New World
#7Agreed - when I originally commented, I had not read the Folio posts.
