    The thought

Sort of like permanent quests that have requirements for entry.
A user of a certain level with approval can create a guild.
A few poorly conceived and unoriginal examples:

A Guild called 100 posts in 100 days. The criteria are just that in this case and if somebody succeeds in this endeavor than they have met the guild requirements and get guild recognition.
Magician's Guild, create 5 magicians and 25 magic items to join.
Theive's Guild, develop 5 heist plots, 3 theive's guild locations, and something else creative within 20 days.

Not sure how complex I can go but the above should be relatively easy to code.

Once you are in a guild you can maybe get small bonuses for posting inside your guild requirements?

Guilds you belong to can show up in your userpage and perhaps the submissions that are posted for guild initiation can be highlighted somehow.

Make sense? Anything you would be interested in?

    Do you get the idea?

Would posts already done count towards guild requirements?  Meaning if someone posts a guild with requirement X, and certain users have already done X, are they automatically in the guild?  Or does it only count subs posted after the guild requirements?
  3. Re: Guilds

Initial thought is like a quest. Anything in the past is in the past and doesn't count.

Perhaps as a compromise to achieve recognition for past things that fit guild requirements, you need to submit new stuff for admittance, but then (if there happens to be one) your old stuff appears under the guild submissions list?
  5. Re: Guilds

    #5
Possibly make it so that the required submissions need to be at least rated X.
  6. Re: Guilds

    #6
And what exactly are those "small bonuses"? :)
  7. Re: Guilds

I would like to petition for a Wizard's Guild

(must submit 5 things with the Wizard Freetext)

There could also be a Power Poster Guild for someone who posts more than X subs in X amount of time

Maybe, to enter a guild you have to meet the requirements set, then once in your entire porfolio will be reviewed and then your guild rank will reflect your total effort?

The bonus I was thinking was maybe an extra XP or so for every submission related to a guild you are in. A wizard freetext after you are in the guild will give you a bonus. Every post in a row after 100 in 100 gives you another XP bonus, stuff like that.

Am curious what the intent is in ruling out existing posts as qualifications?  Once could easily simply delete and recreate old posts and Poof!

If someone has made good subs that qualify, I don't see the problem.  Scrasamax and Moon would probably enter any guild you could think of :)

  10. Re: Guilds

The idea is to promote posting, not just make generic guilds that automatically include all the big posters, as you mentioned, Scras and Moon and depending on the guild requirements, many others. It is just another incentive to get targeted submissions with an award. Automatically entry for people sort of makes the guild system boring without any new challenges and then what would be the point?

Everybody starts on equal footing when a new guild is established. Give everybody an equal opportunity to enter it. Might even be bragging rights if you beat some prolific posters into it as well. Might as well give a guild ranking number on how quickly they made it into the guild.

When you delete posts you will lose all the comments, all the XP associated with them, plus a bonus negative XP (as you have seen when admins delete comments, this happens bigger on submissions). I can't see the pain of deleting submissions to be worth getting into a guild.

  11. Re: Guilds

Fair enough - I just wanted to see what the pros were on it :)

  12. Re: Guilds

    #12
So bonus XP is it? Oh well. At least there will be a badge or something. :)

    ---

Not counting the old posts is okay, but they shouldn't be excluded, because somebody will be searching for submissions in this way, can't avoid it. So there has to be a guild's 'homepage', with links to the various resources, spanning categories, freetexts and what not. (Thus Wizard's Guild could link to magical items, schools of magic, or anything else its members would think of. The Fighters Guild, duh, would link to melee weapons, mercenaries, and so on, and so on, and so on.)

I think this idea is what you are basically saying and I agree.

Perhaps as a compromise to achieve recognition for past things that fit guild requirements, you need to submit new stuff for admittance, but then (if there happens to be one) your old stuff appears under the guild submissions list?
  14. Re: Guilds

^^ So glad I could help.
  15. Re: Guilds

    #15
So these are really just badges?
  16. Re: Guilds

    #16
Badges? We don't need no stink'n badges.

If very bland and taking away what they really stand for, I suppose you could refer to them that way. But when you see the guild "badge" it will be linked to that guild and that user's submissions associated with it as well as entrance into the rest of the guild's submissions.

As one of our goals of the site is to continuously find new ways to refresh older submission, guilds are just another opportunity to browse the submissions in a new light while at the same time providing some quest-like opportunities for those that are looking for a challenge. Just another option to pursue on the site.

I figure you don't just automatically get into a guild by accidently posting the requirements. Would have to submit your intention to apply for a guild and you can only apply for one guild at a time. Don't want it just happening on accident and also don't want somebody just applying for every guild and then getting it on accident. On top of the requirements there might be a time limit to do it as well as a rating/length requirement for them as well.

The badge should mean something and when somebody sees you have a wizard's "badge" they should read the requirements and say "Oh, geesh, that is what you have to do to get into it." They should be a challenge to get.

I knew the badges quote was comming, but I have a point. They have no other function as they are stated. All they seem to be is quests that run 24/7/52.

They are graphic reward for just doing something like it was posted in the challange section.

Oooohhh shiney badge.  Okay that is fun.

But really, without some concrete reward, all they are simple badges you earn to show off how cool you are.

Now if a badge was a requirement to get past level 5.  A badge being a requirement to achieve those uber levels?

  18. Re: Guilds

I think the automatic level system is fine. I don't really want to force people to do a quest/badge to increase levels. Some may care nothing about the badges or levels, but levels will allow more stuff so it would be a "necessary evil" to them, don't want to make anybody have to jump through additional hoops.

Guilds are just an amusing diversion, not required for anything but there for your enjoyment if you so choose to partake.

    ...yes....pretty....shiny....weeeeeee

They can be percieved like that, but I see them as signifying something a little more technical and difficult to achieve. When I see a shiny badge, I will expect that to signify a distinct accomplishment. That is my vision of them. A notice to others that this person is accomplished in this sort of submission so if I am looking for thieve's stuff, I may check out those that are in the thieve's guild with the expectation their will be some good things in there for me to browse.

Perhaps once you are a guildmember, you can do a vote similar to a Golden Nomination for other subs worthy of entry into the guild.  If a non-member gets enough of them, they could enter the guild.

  20. Re: Guilds

    #20
I still *really* like this idea by the way.
  21. Re: Guilds

    #21
Maybe it could be just a group of people who are constantly coming up with challenges for the members, but they relate to the guilds purpose.

Oh, and dare I say it...Guild Wars
  22. Re: Guilds

    #22
    I still like this idea.
  23. Re: Guilds

    #23
I like this idea too  :D

Is it basically the same as in-game achievements for video games?

Achievement badges would be pretty cool.

    some examples:
    "100 in 100"
    "10 in 10"
"In with a bang": first five posts above 4.5
"Apprentice": ten consecutive posts with improved ratings
"WIzard!": 25 wizard freetext above 4.0
"Warrior": 5 weapons, 5 armors, 2 combative NPCs (all above 3.5)
    "Warlord": 10 weapons, 10 armors, 5 fortifications, 5 combative NPCs, and 1 combat/warfare system (all above 4.0)
"Clown": 5 humour posts and 15 funny freetexts.
"Loudmouth": Comment is longer than submission
"Systems engineer": at least one system in each system categories.

But I would definitely see this as automatic.
  24. Re: Guilds

And we would need some cool monochromatic icons to go with same....
  25. Re: Guilds

    YES!!!!!! To all thoughts!
  26. Re: Guilds

    I want Guilds!  :hyper:
  27. Re: Guilds

Fun stuff to see incorporated, and could help draw more interest and new members to the site.
  28. Re: Guilds

    #28
Yep, I absolutely still love this idea. I have recently made an awards model (which has some slight issues I have seen in the tracking) which is the start of it all. This can be incorporated nicely with that. Also still have the intention of allowing user created quests with the entire system too.

It is slowly coming along and I am glad this was brought up from the dead!!
  29. Re: Guilds

    #29
Started putting the database together for this today.

For the initial incarnation I am going to try and make this happen.

Requirements will be limited to 5 different categories

So basically you can mix and match any 5 main and/or subcategories as requirements
Or just have one, doesn't matter
Or just none and just a post quantity requirement (so we can do the 10 in 10)

Of those 5 categories you will need to put a number of required submissions
You can put a rating requirement on it. (need above a 4.0)

Can't have a lower than requirement though.

Initially I am opting against the freetext one but we can try to go back to that later if I can make this work. Some of the other things I am too dumb to figure out and/or I am not willing to go that complex yet.

Having only read the first post, I like the idea.

How far along are we on this?
  31. Re: Guilds

    #31
I spent about 5 hours trying to come up with the logic on the database to get it to do what I want. I think I am closer but it is not as easy I had hoped. It either gets real complicated or we sacrifice some features. Still doing internal debate on how to put it together. Will be a slow leak on this one unfortunately.

Instead of making this a Citadel heavy codeworked automated and may never work correctly website update I decided to move this idea into the forum. Or at least try it that way. Will start another thread with the seed of the idea that I hope might work out.
