Regions (Formerly Neighborhoods)
#1This is going to get messy. Moon will clarify anything I screw up trying to describe it. I have minimal notes on it and I took too long to write it down.
Neighborhoods and the Worlds pages will have similiar construction.
Right now the Codices are too much! They are a great idea in concept but some of them are so huge that they lose their function. So this is the thought on how to fix them.
I think we came up with the following:
Going to the main Codex will basically be the Table of Contents (TOC) with the King Codex description. The TOC will be alphabetical. This will basically be like an intro page for the Codex and it won't just spill out to you.
The idea is to have two links to each submission:
-The first will take you to that submission to view it as normal with a very obvious link back to the codex -or- a "PREVIOUS NEXT" type think -or- it may have the TOC load with it.
-The second is to have ajax step in and dynamically load each codex underneath the TOC. Each time you click on this link the bottom submission reloads without a full page refresh.
The first is more for just a different way to browse them. Who knows how people like to do things. Probably better for spiders too as they are actual links to content. Will figure it out later and see what thoughts are on it.
I personally wanted the TOC to go to the left side of the screen and have the center portion refresh as clicked. Moon liked it on the bottom if I remember correctly. Probably figure out a happy medium somewhere.
Worlds will end up similiar but with many more options on organizing the layout/sort order/etc... Get into that later. -
Re: Region (Formerly Neighborhoods)
#2They are called Regions because we have a submission type called neighborhoods
Regions and worlds have similar structures, they are ways of linking various types of submissions together and giving them a home. They will have a home page. They will have a listing of every member submission of that type. And you will be able to search in that region for a specific type of feature (so an NPC related to taverns)
A region is a general category of various submission types. Many of them are grouped by freetexts. And at the moment, many of them have some really LARGE codices that will become regions.
In fact, there would need to be over 30 entries (submissions and stubs) for a region to be eligable.
Some example regions would be Taverns/ Inns, Books, Corvus, Demon, Goblin, and so on.
If you need a handle on this, try thinking of it as a section of the library. History is on these shelf rows. Books on animals are on these shelves. This small section is about schools of magic. In our case, submissions related to tavern would be in this one shelf we are calling a region.
So Regions would make the site easier to use by casual users, so they could easily find things they need.
In practice...
You want to go to the Tavern Region page for some tavern NPCs. You would get there by clicking the Regions section on the top nav bar. Then you would select which one you would go to from that home page.
There, there would be some text, a little flavor text and some text explaining what this region is and has in it.
There will also be an alphabetical list of everything in this region, every submission and stub. (This is a feature to be found in every codex list too). This will make long lists easier to manage.
If you click a type navigation (like article, dungeon, item, lifeform, etc) you will come up with a listing of all the submissions of that type in the region. So if you are in Taverns, and click NPCs and you would get every tavern owner, barkeep, tavern worker, and tavern patron we have written up. To get back to all NPCs or non tavern submissions, you would click the Citadel Main first click on the nav bar.
These pages would be kept up by all the moderators. Unlike worlds, there would be no owner of the region. A region would become nominated by moderators and it would be selected by popular decree.
Now, the existance of regions will spell the demise of several codices, as they will be supurfulous. Several Scrolls will be broken up into stubs and those stubs associated with the region. Given the way Codices will work, several of our scrolls will actually be codices with stubs and a few submissions associated with them (books comes to mind).
We also will need a more library book sounding name for regions. Stacks? Shelf?

Re: Regions (Formerly Neighborhoods)
#4Still underdiscussion and that topic will open up in the moderator section as time goes on.
As of right now, the prototypes are
Books
Taverns/ Inns
Corvus
We have roughly 18 other possible options, so the initial field needs to be narrowed some.

#5Tablet?
I think regions will probably become the codex and folio will take the place of the current incarnation of the codex.
Codex is like a book whereas a Folio is a part inside the codex. Seems to make sense that way. We are simply upgrading codex and then adding folios that have some of the features of the original codex featureset but are new and improved. -
Re: Regions (Formerly Neighborhoods)
#6Tablet? Shelf? Rack? Where is that library science major when we need one?
Actually folios, see the that thread, have a different experiencial texture.
Regions are more like settings really. You should think of them in that context. They are a bunch of things with the same thematic link. A setting is that entire setting, the region is that "area of experience".
Codices should be the backbone of our organizational system still. They have replaced scrolls as the important way to organize things. Or do you want to scrap our existing system of naming and structure and try again from scratch. I would only agree to that if data integrety was held and we didn't have to move as much as we did in Version 2 change.
So a Region will have a "homepage". That homepage will like a setting be a codex, with that alpha listing. It will have a summary and maybe someone will get around to writing up some details about it for the body of the submission.
In a region, when you click on Societies, you would get any society for that region. So if we are in Taverns, it might be a society against alcohol or a union or a Tied/ Guild organization.
So you can search things by that alpha list, or go by type.
Sure you can do some of this by simple use of freetext, but it frees up freetexts and prevents us from cluttering that list up. And it gives more functionality.
A moderator will have to assign things to a region. Any moderator should be able to do it.
