Game (D20 Call of Cthulhu): The End of Paradise
#1The Paradise Theater was built in 1892 by the wealthy Allen family. It was originally a showplace for stage acts seating 350, but as vaudeville became less popular, it was converted into a movie theater.
Although the building was one of the finest in town, a glorious riot of bas-relief and gilt, it fell into disrepair as it aged. With one screen and rising maintainence costs, the Paradise was becoming increasingly unprofitable. It closed in 1976 when the last remaining member of the Allen family, Jessica Allen passed away. The theater passed into the ownership of the Allen Foundation, and sat empty and unused for thirty years.
Despite the damage that decades of neglect have done, Metro Arts, a local nonprofit organization, recently bought the building from the Allen Foundation with the intention of restoring the Paradise Theater to its former glory. They have slowly been renovating and improving the building, using volunteer labor and donations.
In a few days, the Paradise Theater will reopen for the first time in over thirty years. Metro Arts has decided to hold an opening night gala to draw more attention to their work and raise more money to continue the renovation.
However, a recent accident has marred the Paradise's immenient success. One of the volunteer workers, a student named Mary Green, fell from a scaffold as she was painting a ceiling and was seriously injured. Rumors are spreading that something *caused* her to topple from the scaffold, and that the theatre is haunted. People who were around when the Paradise was still in operation mention other unsettling accidents that they had forgotten until now. Harry Sampson, who worked as a janitor for the last twenty years of the theater's life, even mentioned to a reporter that he used to hear sounds like something big moving around in the walls of the theater.
There's only vague rumors now, but people involved with the project are starting to think something is seriously wrong with the Paradise Theater. Metro Arts (and to a lesser extent, the Allen Foundation) is keen to see these rumors dismissed, especially since it's so close to the opening. Metro's insurance company is also interested in determining if the working conditions had anything to do with Mary's accident.
This is a modern day Call of Cthulhu game, focusing on investigating the secrets of the Paradise Theater. I'm using the D20 conversion of CoC, and looking for four or five players. (Two slots have been filled.) Players can either create their own characters, or I can create stat blocks and give them to you. Either way, characters will be first level.
Characters can be investigating the Paradise Theater on behalf of the insurance company, Metro Arts, and/or the Allen Foundation, or they could be friends/acquaintances of Mary Green, involved in Metro Arts as volunteers themselves, or might simply be curious.
