  1. A Trip to Egypt

Here's a question that I never resolved to my satisfaction:

For a game of Cthulhu by Gaslight, I planned to run a scenario where the investigators travel to Egypt from England.  What "stumped" me was the most likely routes and travel times involved:

Would they take ship from England, heading around Spain and across the Mediterranean?  Do they cross the Channel, take a train across France, traveling via ship from that point?

Was it practical to travel to Constantinople via rail at that time?

Ship was fastest, usually with a Lisbon, Portugal stopover. Land route would usually head through france and germany, south through italy, and then by boat across the mediterranean, not unlike the crusaders.

via Constantinople would be excess travel.

    here, this may help....

    London to Port Said:

P&O mail steamer every Friday via Gibraltar and Marseilles, 12 days

British India Steam Navigation (3-4 times a month), 12 days

Orient Line (every other Sat, via Gibraltar, Toulon, and Naples); 12 days

Union-Castel Line, 1x a month via Marseilles and Genoa; 12 days

Nippon Yusen Kaisha; fortnightly in 13 days via Gibraltar, Marseilles, Naples

    Southhampton to Port Said

Rotterdam Lloyd: via Tangier and Marseilles, 11 days (every other Fri)

Nederland Line: every other Thurs, via Algiers and Genoa, 12 days

German African Services, every 3 weeks; via Lisbon, Tangier, Malaga, Genoa; no note on time

I used that route too, I usually spent a few extra nights in Port Said though...had a little something on the side there. :0

    Great details Muro!

Thank you for the information, Muro!

Do you have any particular sources that you recommend for more travel information about the period?
