Game (d20/Fantasy): For King and Country
#1Title: For King and Country
Genre: Fantasy
Rule-Set: D20 system. Using the current SRD as Core mechanics. Additional sources are being considered.
Space Limitations: None.
PC Restrictions: Good Characters Preferred. Non-Good characters must have alterior motivations for preventing a large scale civil war.
Synopsis: King Varnin has been missing for over a month now, and nobody knows where he has dissapeared to. By Royal Decree, if three months pass before the king is found, the next of kin inherits the throne until his return.
With King Varnin's eldest son having died on a quest several years before, the burden falls on his twin sons, Cedric and Francis. However, neither one wants to share the throne with the other and with time running out for the King's return, it looks like a massive civil war is inevitable.
Find the king before time runs out, or thousands will die.
Notes: This will be a very standard fantasy game, without the need for major variations on classic roleplaying. There will be a few things to keep in mind however:
1) I will let the players lose. I might fudge a few die rolls, but I won't be pulling any miracles.
2) There will be a little bit of everything. A balanced party could make the difference between success and failure.
3) Not every challenge should be fought. Pick your battles carefully.
4) Ingenuity will be rewarded. Be clever, be smart, be crafty. The direct approach isn't always the only road to success.
5) Don't write your alignment on your character sheet. Play your character to their character, not to their "alignment". Besides, my alignment definitions may be different than yours.
If there are any questions or concerns, feel free to ask them. I will add things as they are needed. -
Re: Game (d20/Fantasy): For King and Country
#2one of the twins should have been named heir apparant when the eldest son died. minor flaw. it still stands that the twin would fight for the right to the throne.
do we have different personality traits known for the twins, and do we know which factions favor each of them? would either make a better king? or do we have to take the various knowledge skills to know these things.
what was the king doing before he disappeared. people should at least know that. and non-good characters should want to NOT prevent the war =P
what is the country name? and do you need maps or anything artsy like that cuz i can draw up some stuff for you if you wish. -
Re: Game (d20/Fantasy): For King and Country
#3Now, now, Lanfear! Don't be mean to the GM!
There are numerous reasons why the succession might be unclear in such a case: Perhaps the firstborn of the twins is not quite as suited to rule, due to factors of his personality or interests. Nebulous considerations like that could easily persuade the king to delay naming his successor until the consequences of the decision are more clear.
If you were a king, and you favored the second son, would you be eager to alienate the other child? (Especially soon after the death of the eldest son.)
>>>>
And non-good characters should want to NOT prevent the war...
>>>>
Many less-ethical sorts wouldn't want to prevent a war, but just because someone is evil doesn't mean that they are eager for a war...
The peasants cringe in fear of Baron Locke, the heartless ruler of the Southern March, but none doubt the cruel man's ability as a war leader. Despite his ruthlessness, his eyes soften when he looks at his son Caion, newly grown to manhood. A silent prayer escapes the Baron's lips...
"I have done evil things... foulness and murder. Please, God, spare my son my fate! Let the cost of my sins pass by him and keep the land in peace!" -
Re: Game (d20/Fantasy): For King and Country
#4Lan, you've played the second Knights of the Old Republic game, right? That game occurs after one of the great Jedi/Sith wars, a war that manage to devestate an already weak Republic. But war seems to be breeding again, and we run into the droid GO-TO, a most decidedly "evil" character. Using assassination, black market trading, abduction, and sundry other illegal means the droid succeded in returning the galaxy to a pre-war level of functioning.
This character qualifies as evil in all but the loosest definitions, and in the game it even gets a bright red background, but it's overall goal was to stabalize the galaxy.
Revan too, we see in various parts of the game, had the stabalization of the galaxy as his/her final goal. Rev left infastructure intact whenever and however possible, never attacked a major production facility even though he/she controlled the Star Forge, an unlimited production facility.
Kreia, in conversations with the Exile, says that Revan was concerned with a greater threat, and felt that the gaxaly needed to be united to fight a great Sith threat, and it's implied that Revan only "fell" to the dark side in order to fight this greater threat from beyond the galaxy.
Both of these are good example of a evil character that would try their hardest to avoid this upcoming civil war. On top of this there can be good characters that want this war to happen. Insert someone who feels that the monarchy must be replaced with a republic, or at least a Magna Carta to limit the power of said monarch. -

#6Well I suppose that thats one way to silence a critic...
Anyway, I would like to mention that I have only posted a brief synopsis, not the whole story. Everybody will be completely filled in when the game starts. It all makes sense. I promise.
