New user with a database question
#1Hello,
My name is Malstrom. I'm in the process of creating an online game over at www.chivalrywars.com and am at the point where I'd like to implement a battle system. I'm also looking for quest ideas and found that this site is a great resource!
Anyway, my question... is there a place I can download a database (any format such as Excel, SQL, etc. is fine) that has "lifeforms" and their stats? It would save me lots of time to already have an established creature database instead of having to think it up and type it out.
Hope this was ok to request here. I searched for this on the forums already and didn't see anything like my request, but then again there's a lot of info here.
Thanks,
Malstrom -
Re: New user with a database question
#2Hello, Malstrom!
You're certainly welcome to ask anything you want here: We're an easy bunch to get along with. Unfortunately, this site doesn't really have the kind of codified information that you want. Perhaps one of the site's masters of "Google-Fu" could direct you.
Could you be more specific about what you're looking for? For example, you can narrow down a search for lifeforms on the site by their type and habitat, so putting together a list of interesting and appropriate species for each environment wouldn't be difficult. -
Re: New user with a database question
#3Stats - we don't do stats here Pardner! :)
Seriously, most submissions here are system agnostics and stats are deliberately left out.
If you are willing to live with D20's special licensing (OGL) you can use the basic D20 monsters with D20 stats, even in software.
But that is a big if though :)

Re: New user with a database question
#4Thanks for the kind words, it's always up in the air as to whether you'll be blasted for asking a question or not on a new forum.
I guess my request comes mainly from laziness honestly. I'm sure I could come up with my own list of creatures as well as scour the internet for ideas, but I was hoping that something might already exist that I could implement.
The information I'd like would looking something like:
Name | HP | Level | (and any other interesting characteristics would be bonus)
Spider 5 1
Snake 5 1
Bat 7 2
Imp 7 2
Ghost 10 3
You can see how creative I am. :)
I understand this site has a lot more to offer and may be outside the scope of my question but I was hoping someone might have a link or another site they could provide.
Thanks again,
~Malstrom -
Re: New user with a database question
#5Thanks valadaar for the tip on D20. I found lots of good information there:
http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=d20/article/srd35
but the format they have it in is pretty ridiculous. It's still a lot of cutting and pasting. I haven't looked at the licensing for it but if it comes to that I will.
Still hoping someone else will know of a downloadable database of creatures thats available. -
Re: New user with a database question
#6There's a site with the D20 Rules and just the sort of information that you want:
http://www.d20srd.org/
For a game using D&D 3.5, they can help you out! -
Re: New user with a database question
#7Now if I could just get their database as a direct download... I'd be set!
Again, keyword is lazy. The info there is great, but how to get it into my game (database) is the problem.

Re: New user with a database question
#8Well, there is a program called PCGen, which operates under the license, so their source data is fair game ( I think) so you might be able to use their data files.
Eg:
From rsrd_kits_races_a_b_extras.lst
STARTPACK:Hound Archon Hero VISIBLE:QUALIFY EQUIPBUY:0 PREMULT:1,[!PRERACE:%],[PRERACE:Archon (Hound)]
RACE:Archon (Hound) !PRERACE:%
NAME:Hound Archon Hero
ALIGN:LG
CLASS:Paladin LEVEL:11
STAT:STR=17|DEX=10|CON=14|INT=8|WIS=12|CHA=14
SKILL:Concentration RANK:17
SKILL:Hide RANK:7
SKILL:Listen RANK:8
SKILL:Sense Motive RANK:17
SKILL:Spot RANK:8
SKILL:Diplomacy RANK:14
SKILL:Ride RANK:14
FEAT:Improved Initiative
FEAT:Leadership
FEAT:Mounted Combat
FEAT:Ride By Attack
FEAT:Track
FEAT:Weapon Focus(Greatsword)
GEAR:Greatsword SIZE:PC LOCATION:Both Hands EQMOD:MWORKW.PLUS2W.C_IRON
GEAR:Full Plate SIZE:PC LOCATION:Equipped EQMOD:MWORKA.PLUS3A
SPELLS:SPELLBOOK=Prepared Spells|CLASS=Paladin|Bull's Strength|Divine Favor|Eagle's Splendor|Protection from Evil
#
This might help you. If I were to have designed it I'd have only used one type of delimiter instead of | and : and whitespace. Or even XML.
