  1. Request: Gallery

    #1
Today at 04:10:45 Jarons20 - Strolen, Gallery won't let me post, even web pics
Today at 04:16:08 Strolen - Stupid gallery. I hate that thing. Only works for a couple days then dies. I probably need to just remove it.
Today at 04:18:13 Strolen - It is on my list, Jarons. It is a huge pain in the ass though.
Today at 04:26:45 Jarons20 - I know it wouldn't fit the look of the site, but what about a communial Flickr group
Today at 04:31:18 Strolen - Ya know, that might be a great fix while everything is broken.

This got me thinking: The coppermine gallery we've been using this far isn't really blending well with the rest of the site. Hey, it isn't even working very well at the moment. Jarons20 made a valid comment about Flickr being usable (above), and also about it not fitting the look and feel. I'd like to make another point too: Just like the coppermine gallery it would feel too separated from the main site.

    So here goes:
Do you think it is time you wrote your own, on-site gallery Strolen?

    Our needs:
    - To link images into subs.
    - To position those images in said subs. Example: header position, right align, left align, bottom align. Make text wrap around images nicely in all browsers.

    Dozus officially endorses this request.

I know that Citadel v1.0 had a gallery, that seemed to fit in a more or less reasonable fashion, and didn't have the same issues with, you know, working.  Was it a different version of what we have now, or something Strolen coded?  I don't know, I'm just talking off the top of my head.

Although it's been proven that you'll only get what you want if you build it yourself.

I can always try the forum gallery. I think it has an add-on.

OF COURSE I want to build my own gallery, but in the scheme of things that we want done, that quickly flows to the bottom of the "need to do" list, do you agree?

I try and balance my priorities between what I feel like coding and what you all have requested. I have been trying to take the easy way out and use third party extensions with a simple hack on my side but it hasn't worked out very well.

Willing to try another hack to at least get something useable?
(I have more faith in this one since it is a forum mod and actively updated to work specifically with the forum vs. a standalone that has to hack it's way into the site's system)

Or do you just want to wait around till I get to coding my own? ;)

I could probably, fairly quickly, figure out where the pictures are stored and such and modify the ability to use them in posts again.

How bout you throw up something that works, then when you have the time/inclination, make a cool one?

I will take that as a mean spirited jab at my honour and courage implying that nothing I do works and that I am a complete failure in my personal and professional life of which no shrink could hope to help me recover from and I should drink myself into the gutter, waste all my money, and befriend a kindly llama who will travel through the world with my by jumping into open boxcars and visiting with hoboes.

That is what you meant isn't it? Although you do also allude to the fact that I might possible be able to create something cool which shows a sparkle of faith in my ability to accomplish something worthwhile which my parents said would never happen and becuase of that I am still looking for an opportunity to show them that I can do more than open push doors in a department store while carrying a full glass of milk.

I'd have taken that the same way, Strolen.  Except the Llammas. Well, maybe with the llamas.

Time for a W.C. Fields quote:

"A woman drove me to drink...
And I never said, thank you."

So, Strolen, are we driving you to drink?

If I can add pictures to my subs (on the 'other half' of the site) I promise to produce a picture for one of my subs (Goodman Slatterbite) that will justify the effort...

I can guarantee my own subs with visuals if we have a gallery.

Yeah it takes time to write such a beast. But with this in the suggestions thread at least it is *somewhere* in the priority list. :)

With a threats like these, how can I say no?

I actually dreamt about the gallery last night...
    Yeah, I know.

Anyhow: What about just using the php image library to create 5 column spreadsheets with row upon row of images viewable by clicking a link in the profile of its owner? "View Ancient Gamer's images". Sort of an image dump. Those images can then be linked into any sub.

The great thing about such galleries is that anyone can make a sub, link the picture in and let us vote on it. OR he could just use it in his other submission, like a plot or item.

That removes the focus from the gallery as such and incorporates the images into the main site in a smoother way! At least I think so.

By having user unique galleries we avoid a huge dump of pictures and we avoid yet another section to take into consideration. Images become just another element to be used in our subs and can even be a sub in itself.

The same approach can be used for sound.

Did that make any sense to you?

    ...link the picture in...

Now, isn't that another thing we could link into our submissions? :)
  15. Re: Request: Gallery

Linking is the only reason the gallery exists actually. It wasn't the intention to just host pictures. I discarded the above mentioned forum mod because of the difficulty involved in me developing a script to get the pictures sucked into submissions. But if you can't even use the gallery than the purpose is sort of lost.
  16. Re: Request: Gallery

I realize that. I just don't think there should be any gallery as such. Just images connected to a user. Those images can be viewed by entering the profile of said user and opening a web page containing his images. Each image has an unique id, for instance http://www.strolen.com/images/index.php?user=AG&image=1

    :)

I think we are on the same level. I just had specific ideas of how we could do it. ;)

Even if they were identified with a person in their profile, I would still want a gallery type location. When I build, I can then connect those pictures, maybe, to the posts that use them to have yet another way to browse through posts.

I see your point and I do agree with it. First thing would be your approach with the gallery as an eventual addition.
