#7I have quickly reviewed the subs, and they are well done! One had a word I am unclear on; sent a PM to clear up.
Noticed a host of special chars in Iain's profile due to that Authentic Strolenite stamp people like to have (R)(C) - so more people may have it. Another place to search.
As seen here, when the links parsing thingie is fixed, those will also need cleaning up.

#11Spent an hour trying to find what encoding was used to make those characters all for nothing so far. Dragonlord does have a ton, somewhat easy to get his through profile/view comments. But no way for me to make a list at the moment. It won't find just € anymore, we are beyond that point and into some encoding issues.
It is hit or miss depending on the encoding of it which I can figure out.
It is probably word combined with a database dump/restore that has all the encoding messed up maybe, or I just don't know which one it is.
Will play again with it later, but we have hit the current limit of my ideas unless you can find the encoding for those characters. ie \xC0\xC1\xC2\xC3\xC4\xC5\xC6 etc. -

#17I tried the tip in that article. I guess we are one of the ones where it truncates the data. Lost half of the submission where there were special characters. (test database obviously)

#18Hitting a bunch of Dragon Lord's comments to clean them up. One thing, tho, the sub "Babysitting" (26) shows a comment with crazy characters when I look up all of DL's comments, but the sub itself apparently no longer exists. Was it moved to Private or something? -

#25Okay. I click on Dragon Lord's profile, and select the "Show all comments" option. It gives me the list of his comments, which is what I was using to find the odd characters. I open each comment in a new window (mostly so I don't lose my place) and edit the comment. Once I edit it, if I reload the page with the list of his comments, the comment that I edited no longer appears on the list (that I can find). -

#27I haven't checked all the pages in my list of comments, but it wasn't on the first or the last page. (I was working from the end of Dragon Lord's comments.) And when I look at the sub itself, it still has his name on it, and I haven't gotten XP increases, I don't think. -

#28No, a comment that I edit doesn't appear in my space, and is still correctly credited to Dragon Lord - just not visible on that list anymore. The profile says he has 363 comments, the list only shows 139 at this moment. -

Actually, if I edit my own comment, then it vanishes from my comment list as well... so it is at least a consistent bug. :) -

#32Just be aware, we found some crazy chars in old forum posts as well as the Citadel Proper. I fixed what I saw, but I haven't been through a lot of old posts.
Update by manfred: there are some in the forum signatures, too. -

#35Yeah... where are those two subs actually? They are not Challenged, Awaiting Approval, Requesting Edit, not In Work or Hidden, or even Deleted.
One theory: DL refers in his comment to some 'fillip', whom I cannot find... could it be a deleted account or something? -

#36Just a small bump on the topic.
When the html links are functional again, I would like to extend the Aeasthetic Challenge on any links that are still broken in places now. But if that takes some more time (weeks... months... years?), maybe we should consider rewarding Pariah already.

as fas as the challenege, maybe we could anounce a "special crazy character fixing week" or something, where everyone must find at least one sub with special characters and fix it. Everyone can document their fix(es) in the challenge thread. Maybe we can figure out some kind of minor "reward" something or other. -

#38As an update, I went through the Idea Seeds today, which were surprisingly special character-free. Found only two, and gave a note to their owner. When it will be possible again to edit the Seeds, they will be fixed.

So, do we have any other major area where they could be hiding? There may still be a few in some submissions or comments. (But I won't EVER go over forum posts, though there are some. No way. :) ) -
