RSS Feeds: Changing contents

RSS Feeds: Changing contents
#1Currently my Strolen.com RSS feed contains lots and lots of Inane Natter nonsense. While I sometimes indulge in said nonsense I do not want it in my RSS feed.
What I want in the RSS is a customizable smorgasbord where each user could put a check mark in front of his prefered content, including main site genres. If that concept proves unavailable I would certainly like to have the Extraneous Voices of Picauyne pruned from the feed.

Re: RSS Feeds: Changing contents
#2Checked some sites out. There seems to be one easy method for doing this, which is listing several feeds and mentioning what they contain.
It would work like this:
Feed A (link) : This feed contains only new main site submissions
Feed B (link) : This feed contains all main site submissions and comments
Feed C (link) : This feed contains all forum comments (which is what we have today)
Feed D (link) : This feed contains forum comments except the Inane Natter
Beware too many choices. Well... Whaddya think? -
Re: RSS Feeds: Changing contents
#3Without going insane in the code, it isn't as easy to exempt a forum vs. adding all the ones you actually want. I could probably figure it out but try what I put up for now.
There is a rss feed for each forum now. Maybe get us a little bit closer to what you are looking for.
For the main site, I have to write the rss from scratch and it is on my todo list which I will eventually get to. -
Re: RSS Feeds: Changing contents
#4Okay... I am not against it, but could the little neat symbols be placed on some more, let's say... fixed? And not all over the place? :)
Thank you. -

#5Better! :D -

#7What the barlafumble is an RSS Feed? -
Re: RSS Feeds: Changing contents
#8I was wondering that myself. -
Re: RSS Feeds: Changing contents
#9In Opera, it has a RSS reader built in. Otherwise, personally, I would just ignore it.
It is sort of like an email telling you there is an update, but instead the RSS reader goes and checks for updates instead of receiving them. So it is a pull system vs. a push system. You subscribe to a feed (by clicking on the rss graphic) and then it collects the new posts when you open/use it. -

#10Blimey! -
Re: RSS Feeds: Changing contents
#11That RSS thing is mostly useful with sites that update irregularly - like blogs. So you subscribe here and there, and then you can see at once what is new on twenty websites you are interested in, without having to visit each and every of them every day.
I tried it out, and it was pretty cool, but it revealed itself as a great time-eater. Use at own risk. :) -
Re: RSS Feeds: Changing contents
#12I would definitely make a nice feature for strolen2.4. we could stop the email notification on the submissions. and for a quickly changing site it would be helpful too, if you could select what to subscribe to. -
Re: RSS Feeds: Changing contents
#13True, you can only limit the emails you receive to a point, which is still quite a few emails when it comes right down to it. I have nothing in place to stop duplicates on the same topic etc.
RSS is pretty high on the list, but I can't really do it till I fix some of the code as I don't want to have to recode the RSS when I change some of the other stuff on my list. Unfortunately, it will be a little while before the main citadel has RSS. I WANT IT THOUGH. Excited to do it actually. -
Re: RSS Feeds: Changing contents
#14aside: is RSS something akin to an XML subset?
It would be nice to think that eventually, a lot of stuff would get to be XML based (not just on strolen's, but generally).
It sounds like a neater way of doing things.
I was wondering actually, out of interest... How do you store the posts/submissions at the moment strolen?
