Linking stuff
#1And now for something completely different.
A little debate was started in this thread about linking, and how to develop it further. I plan to merge this debate into that thread, and put it out for open discussion.
I've exchanged recently a few PMs with Strolen on this topic. For reasons I can list if desired, I didn't like the options of that thread, but they have pointed a little further.
Time for a crappy example - click on Runecasting, then on the opened blockquote, play with closing and opening the two.
So, what I imagine is a nice little AJAX thingie, that would put the contents of a submission directly into the current submission, similarly to the example - no reloading of the whole page necessary, just the one part. It would be possible to hide and show it again, without further loading. Stubs would work here especially well. There's further questions as to the actual design and how the special tag would look like, etc, but those can be solved.
Strolen, however, pointed out that we may have to redesign the whole thing, and he may be right on that. The Codex was a nice start, but it's still very clunky.
We need to find a nice, gentle, subtle solution that will put all the information at our fingertips, without appearing too large or complicated. Go figure. :)
Now that I think of it, this is may be a start of the Worlds of the Citadel we have been planning for so long. So let us know of all your ideas! Please! -
Re: Linking stuff
#2I will start by saying I don't like the Codex. I LOVE the concept, but don't like its current incarnation. It is huge, takes a lot of resources, probably takes awhile to download, and it is a very complex beast.
I love it though because of what it does. Ajax is going to be a heavy hitter on this one. But how much do we really want to display of each one? Title? Summary? What do we allow to grow and through how many levels? Do we want the ability to comment on every submissions? Do we want full stats on every one? Author? Votes? Hits? How much grows with each click? Should scrolls be shown? How do we tell the reader that there is more to a codex submission easily? Do we then send them to another page or let the codex grow as they click through Ajax?
It needs a full rebuild and I want to do it in a smart way that makes the first transition to v3.0. -

#3So... anything? Anybody? Any ideas? Bits? Know any websites that use something that may work for us?

Re: Linking stuff
#4I got plenty, but no time yet. You will get the soapbox/manifest before too long. This weekend at the earliest.
