Re: Possible Additions to the Subtypes
#2Comments? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller? -
Re: Possible Additions to the Subtypes
#3I will soon. Too busy trying not to break the server at the moment. By tomorrow night I should have comments. For the most part though, I have no real problem with them. -
Re: Possible Additions to the Subtypes
#4My few bits:
The only hurdle I see, is that it's quite a lot of them. Especially Items have already many categories. Some of those you suggest (Analyzers, Communicators) are clearly Tools. Firearms can be included into Missile Weapons/Firearms (in both cases have the categories few subs in them). Not sure about Computers. SpaceShips - I wouldn't mind a category of its own :) - but they can stay Transports, too.
Lifeforms: Space... why not! Cyberspace I am not so sure about.
Locations: "Mega-Region" needs a better name, no one will get it the first time without referring to a definition, System ditto. World-Wide and Trans World are already good - so why not something in that vein? Trans-Star (in Societies) is a little unclear, but already better. Or Interstellar?
As for 'Meta' here and there... *shrugs* ...shouldn't hurt anything,
---
Thinking again, we have here three major categories, that describe a similar thing - Locations(Type), Societies(Influence), and to a small degree Lifeforms (Habitat) - to how large a piece of the universe is the submission relevant.
They are not exactly the same, but what is close enough, MUST be called with the same name, Locations and Societies in particular. The existing categories are already messy enough. While we are at it, isn't one category larger than World or Space System enough? -
Re: Possible Additions to the Subtypes
#5Originally we folded all the science fiction things into their appropriate generic categories. However, many people (AG and others) have complained that these important sci-fi things are "lost" in the bigger categories. And the system does not support Supers at all. So that is what these changes are all about.
Most of the overlapping subcategories are the same. I don't think we are going to modify anything to disturb that balance.
About Items
Anaylzers and Communiators, could be tools or not... up to community. They are just something I included for categorical completeness. THey are used for cool sci-fi tools, forensic tools, and so on. Tricorders and Communiators (flips out or pins) are important tropes for some science fiction.
I am strong proponents of Firearms, Computers, and Spaceships. Meta I would like to include because if we want to cover the most genres with the least number of categories: meta is useful for Supers, Exalted, and other genre games. We have initial entries for firearm and spaceships. I have things tucked away for Computers and Meta.
Of all the additions, computers is the only one you can not "fold" into other things.
about Lifeforms
The additional Lifeform environments are good for me. We have at least one submission to be moved to each new category.
about Locations
The text is good, the name sucks. Mega-Region is lame, but find a better name that is not being used. Interstellar is not a size, but a measure of location. Stellar implies star sized. Astrological? We can't use Space, as this is used for environment.
And the environment adds are good.
About Societies
Trans-star defined from trans world because trans-world is trans dimensional in their application.
We could add System for one star system groups.
about System
Well this addition is about supers. -
Re: Possible Additions to the Subtypes
#6Would there be a way to add a "Setting" level to posts, so that they could easily be sorted into Fantasy/Historical, Modern, and Science Fiction/Futuristic?
-
Re: Possible Additions to the Subtypes
#7Genre divisions get to be messy, as many settings are mixes. Star Wars is Science Fantasy. Is Lensmen that because it has Psionics? Does the presence of Steam power imediately make something SteamPunk? It just gets too messy.
Even if we went simple...
Atlantis: Futuristic Tech, in a fantasy/historical setting.
Post Appocolyptic Fantasy worlds... Fantasy Historical or Science Fiction?
and the mixing list goes on.
And who gets to be the genre police here?
Please do not let us open this can of worms. -
Re: Possible Additions to the Subtypes
#8Had a long chat with MoonHunter, let's see the results:
Items suffer of a great number of categories, so let's be careful here,
(Type)
Analyzers and Communicators - will be Tools unless there are many or there is popular demand.
Computers - OK.
Firearms - this one was tough. Rename to 'Missile Weapons/Firearms' to have it all in one package. While there, it was noticed the 'Blunt Weapons' category is rather slim - so put it together with Edged Weapons, creating Melee Weapons. So on the one hand close-combat weaponry, on the other all for ranged combat.
Meta - OK.
SpaceShips - OK.
Lifeforms (Habitat)
CyberSpace - contended. Me not likes, MH does. Choose whatever suits you. :)
Space - OK.
Locations
(Types)
(Mega-Region and above is covered by Trans World - which also neatly covers other dimensions etc.)
(Enviroments)
CyberSpace - contended.
Space - OK.
Societies (Influence)
Trans World - (this one will be enough for anything more than a single world, also for alternate dimensions, etc.)
System (Focus)
Meta - OK -
Re: Possible Additions to the Subtypes
#9Cyberspace is a valid and good one. No longer contended.
If we combine blunt and edged weapons to Melee Weapons, we could have another space for Firearms, instead of making it Missile/Firearm (which should be renamed Ranged). However we are adding two more categories, so....
It is good to have science fiction orriented categories. The existance of the categories will help prompt submissions of that type. A "build it, and they will come" philosophy. If we have the categories, we will think in terms of those categories. We will see empty spots and we will fill them, like we filled the others. Once you have findable content of a type
We can install the subtyping, then have a "themed month" of Science Fiction to "celebrate" the new categories.
And Strolen, Someone else is asking about "settings"..
I would prefer the established setting bit we have mentioned in the admin ramble, but I will take anything I get.
Then we can go for various other monthly themes X-Punk (cyberpunk, steam punk), Horror (not just monsters, but scary things), All things Elven, Ships!, or what ever. -
Re: Possible Additions to the Subtypes
#10I don't have the time I thought I would. If you guys agree those then I will put them in. Just need a couple nods in total agreement and I will pop them up there. I don't post enough nor in those categories to believe I know what should or shouldn't be added so I will simply bend to popular consensus. It will get done faster that way too. -
Re: Possible Additions to the Subtypes
#11These MoonHunter-Strolen-MoonHunter-manfred posts tend to have too much information for the users of the Citadel. If any of you gentlemen (not you Moon, for brevity is not your strong point in these matters ;)) could compile the information into a 1-2 paragraph poll, the rest of the active citadellians could help decide.
Just a thought. -
Re: Possible Additions to the Subtypes
#12They also seem to contain information gleened from chat/pms, things that leave the rest of us outta the loop. One example right off of this thread is Moon just announcing that Cyberspace is good, not mentioning that he talked to Strolen or Manfred. At least mentioning that might help facilitate outside understanding. But yeah, give us a list of the final catagories that you guys decided on finally adding at least. -
Re: Possible Additions to the Subtypes
#13Please apologize our introvert manners, we, the curmudgeonly sages are not used to people actually loooking into the many dusty scrolls we produce, and tend to indulge in remarks that no sane external observer would grasp without being present in all of our discussions... and possibly even then not. This shall be immediately rectified, and our rambles shall be shortened to allow you to understand what has originally transpired.
Without further ado and needless words, I present you the short list of suggested additions to the categories of submissions that we plan on adding or changing. A short 'Yea' or 'Nay' is welcome, as any longer reply or questions.
Items / Type
Computers
Melee Weapons (Blunt weapons and Edged weapons will be put here, anything for close combat)
Ranged Weapons (will contain Missile Weapons and Firearms, and whatever energy weapons etc. you can think of)
Meta (superhero inventory and the like)
SpaceShips
Lifeforms / Habitat
CyberSpace
Space
Locations / Type
Trans World (to cover anything beyond a single world, also other dimensions etc.)
Locations / Enviroments
CyberSpace
Space
Societies / Influence
Trans World - (for anything more than a single world, also for alternate dimensions, etc.)
System / Focus
Meta (superhero stuff)
That's it. -
Re: Possible Additions to the Subtypes
#14'Yea' (and thanks) -
Re: Possible Additions to the Subtypes
#15Yea. I'll go for it. *deep echo-y announcer voice* "Tyrennnnn Innnnnnn Spaaaaaaace..." -
Re: Possible Additions to the Subtypes
#16Thanks loads. And that's another yea. -
Re: Possible Additions to the Subtypes
#17So if Strolen can add them soon, we can make Muro do it as a quest. (Must fill in the new categories)
-
Re: Possible Additions to the Subtypes
#18Will do it tonight. -
Re: Possible Additions to the Subtypes
#19The TransWorld cats were already there and the rest have been added! -
Re: Possible Additions to the Subtypes
#20Well, you've added Ranged and Melee Weapons, but you didn't take away the catagories that they're replacing, being blunt, edged, and missle. Wasn't the original intention of adding those catagories to drop the other 3? -
Re: Possible Additions to the Subtypes
#21Actually, the man is right! Yes, that was the plan.
---
Now that all of the categories we wanted so badly are in place, I would like to call upon you all to take a look at the few submissions, that fit in the new categories - I have edited some already, but there are more for sure, Space-y locations and whatnot. Edit them or let me know.
Cheers! -
Re: Possible Additions to the Subtypes
#22I don't know, I read the categories for dummies post and missed that.
Either way, I won't delete those categories till they are empty anyway. I would rather not have uncategorized stuff again if I can help it. -
Re: Possible Additions to the Subtypes
#23And a week of pain and hardcore editing later, the obsolete categories are emptied as humanly possible. With just a little help from you, Strolen, we can make the circle complete... I mean, the category update.
