  1. Ajax

Moon is going to kill me. I got a couple Ajax books for x-mas (yeah, I open some presents early. What's it to ya?) and been reading them.

Understand, this is for my professional developement and resume.

Votes/comments/scrolls that update without a page reload.
Voting may be completely redone ala Netflix or ( http://www.masugadesign.com/the-lab/scripts/unobtrusive-ajax-star-rating-bar/ )
Submissions with only one screen instead of having to pick which type of submission first.
HoH, Favorites, Golden, Challenges etc that update without a page reload.

There has got to be more. What else can we dynamically update? Oh, the shoutbox will be fixed soon hopefully so it does it like in the forum but I will see if I can fix it so that the actual shout doesn't force a reload.

(All down the road a bit, don't expect it this month or anything...but it is coming in whatever version had the code review.)

As I understand what this is... and I only have a bare understanding... It seems all good.

I won't kill you (or even threatened you) if you impliment this... as long as a) it all still works and b) it does not require some special download to use (like a Flash update).

As long as backwards compatibility is maintained, it should work with any browser. And no, it won't need any special download.

You do realize though, that it will increase the page load size?

Improvements are always nice, but: (moral coming here) "Don't do it for the sake of having AJAX on board - do it for the Citadel."

I think you should go for it Strolen!

The lads at work program much in Ajax, and if you keep the effects subtle and clean, the results are neat and cool.
Besides Ajax is so "in" at the moment!

    Bandwagon! Bandwagon! Bandwagon!

I will increase the page load time, but in the long run (especially in some of the codex threads and such) will definately be beneficial.

I won't go crazy with it, probably.

Oh yes you will.  We know you. You are going to find every little nitch it will fit in.  You have a new toy and you want to take it out for a spin. Go have fun and don't break the place.

Good summation of the compatibility issues. The Yahoo UI gets pretty good reviews and since I have no plan on coding all my Ajax myself, I will be depending on a library that already handles most of the issues that we may otherwise worry about.

An article on choosing an Ajax framework to work with. Points out the most popular and they end up choosing Yahoo.

Also add http://mootools.net/ to the possibilities. It is newer and not as supported yet but lots of people like it.

From the ddj article, you will notice that the Ajax files of the ones I would use are only around 30KB and a one time download so they aren't really that huge of an increase. Once downloaded they will be used from the cache.

    Hmmmm.

Anybody else see the possibilities with this one?
