I will try to broach this subject with my significant other today.

    *bites fingernails*

Rehearsal voice: "It is only one weekend, dear!"
*wipes sweat of the forehead and bites a finger nail or two*

tell her that you'll bring her something nice back from the States. Also tell her, that the actual reason for your trip is to gauge various consulting rates, if for no other reason, than to pepper your boss for further raises upon your return.  :P

    if that doesnt work..beg.

    Strolen:

I would volunteer to GM, if we have no other takers.

I'm checking Luxor (mmm, pretty pyramid), Bellagio (connections), MGM Grand (connections). I will also be speaking to several people this week and next to see what kind of deals/packages we can get in other hotels. Conference Room may work, but may be needlessly pricey. May I suggest the Presidential Suite at the Bellagio for gaming? Its huge.  :P (thats probably where I'll stay...connections)

Of course if "cheap" is key, we can always stay in motels on the strip (together or otherwise), and rent a conference room in one of the fancier hotels if need be.

T-Shirts are a given. The prices vary. When I order 1-2 for quests, I get em' free. If I had to order 7-10 at a pop, it would probably be $25-$35/per tee. But thats all doable. Graphics would be cool btw!

Prizes? I'm sure we can think some up.

You know what would really help? Having a definitive headcount! (I know it may be too early for that, but still)

Once we know how many folks will be attending, I can get you "firm quotes" and actual choices/updates on...stuff

Been looking at them airline tickets. Seems like I gotta dish out between 1.000 and 6.500 USD. A bit on the expensive side and then it is the hotel. I can manage, and my SO said okay. She said it sounded cool actually (she is a roleplayer too). If we can afford it (saving for our wedding and stuff too) I will come. I will know by march-april.

So, how many are coming to this event anyways? Will it be admin only, or will the other citadellians be welcome too?
  5. Re: Strolencon?

    #45
Prices sound about right. For us usually ended up being between 500 spain (800 japan)-1500 from Tokyo and Jerez or Seville, Spain depending on the deal you can get. Keep looking for deals and they will pop up.

Once we get solid dates I will put an announcement on the frontpage and something in the forum to discuss it. We *do* want to open it up right? Otherwise it is not a con, it is a meet-up.

That is awesome that you might come AG! Very excited about everybody else too. Perhaps we can do a penny collection for manfred/ria/CP and any others to help defer the cost a little bit. I would be willing to donate a bit. We can obviously share rooms with two queens - I haven't killed anybody in a long time and I sure wouldn't start in Las Vegas...saw too much CSI.
  6. Re: Strolencon?

    #46
Apropos penny collection... How much do you think it would cost to get Shadoweagle on an airplane?
  7. Re: Strolencon?

    #47
More pennies than I have. But I can donate. My bad for not including SE in my short list.

I guess once we get dates and costs we can figure out how much it will be.

Hotels are super cheap during the weekdays. Anybody have to do it on a weekend or is that simply the way it needs to be done regardless of cost. I can get off whenever.
  8. Re: Strolencon?

    #48
Hehe, that's a nada for me, folks!

money issues aside, I won't be able to grab the time off work, and seriously - it would be the first time I've gone out of country. It just wouldn't be worth it to go to america for just one weekend. If I go, ittle be for weeks, or a month or two.

So as I said earlier - perhaps in 3 years or so.
    - I'll focus on becoming fully qualified, rack up some $$$, and then perhaps even look into taking a working holiday to america, cooking my way through the states for a few months.
  9. Re: Strolencon?

    #49
yeah, I was going to say, SE would spend more time in the air than on the ground that weekend  :P
  10. Re: Strolencon?

    #50
Hey, jet lag + roleplaying = fun, fun, fun! :p
  11. Re: Strolencon?

    #51
    Oh yes, it's awesome.
  12. Re: Strolencon?

    #52
June shall be the time when I'll treat my family over in Munich, so it's getting crowded in my sky, not mention annoyances like work and the like.

The money issue (I actually checked, 1200+USD, ow) could be overcome with some pains - UNLESS I buy me a small apartment, as I am considering for this year... then I'll be broke. :)

So as per usual, Depeche Mode says it well: "It's just a question of time."
  13. Re: Strolencon?

    #53
OK Lets discuss a couple things and get this kipper rolling.

manfred has conflicts with June and I can understand the flying consideration as well for our European friends.

    First order:
Las Vegas or somewhere East Coast for a shorter flight? Atlantic City, New York, Boston?

    Second order:
Keep it June? June 23/24 weekend is fine by me but if we slipped it a month would it be better for manfred?

I am still partial to Las Vegas personally, but either is easy for me.

Dates, I can go any time so the dates don't matter at all to me. I would rather make the event available to the most people possible even if some still don't come, at least there was a real choice for them.

If we do the Vegas thing, I would bow to whatever dates Muro comes up with as he is our coordinator in the City of Sins.
  14. Re: Strolencon?

    #54
I will make time to go to this thing, right now my main concern is money.  East Coast would probably be cheaper, for me (I think), but I will make the effort to get wherever.  I will point out that the East Coast is not likely to be as hot as the Nevada desert, but as we're gamers and are likely to be spending most of our time inside anyway, I'm not sure it matters.

Basically, I will make time, so whenever is good for me, and as long as it's not too freakishly expensive, I will arrange for the money, so wherever is good too.

Also, on hotel rooms- how are we going to handle that?  I go to cons already, I have little to no problem sharing a room with eleven to twelve people (guys and girls), most of whom I don't actually know.  I recognize I might be in a minority, however.  I just know that the more people you can share a room with, the cheaper for everyone.
  15. Re: Strolencon?

    #55
    Me:
    - I don't mind whether it is cheap or expensive. BUT: I do not approve of cockroaches and crack junkies as room mates. :p Sharing room with up to 12 gamers, ranging from 15 year old pimple-geeks to 70 year old bearded sages is quite okay. I do think we should stick together
    - East Coast sounds cool to me. Sure, it doesn't have the Las Vegas thrill, but the climate is more to my heat sensitive liking. (Northerners aren't very tolerant of heat)
  16. Re: Strolencon?

    #56
Well, I was sort of assuming that anyone attending the same con I was was My Kind of Peoples to begin with.  :p
  17. Re: Strolencon?

    #57
As long as the crack junkies are hepped up on the rock, it is fine. I am not going to have some stringed out junkie though.

I am all for having multiple people in a room but might not enjoy 12 unless it was a suite. Maybe 10.5 would be all right.

    =====

manfred, what date would be your best poison?
  18. Re: Strolencon?

    #58
    Maybe Chicago even?

or London....Cheap flights but super expensive hotels
  19. Re: Strolencon?

    #59
As per the time, there is nothing sure on my side, so I may be actually able to push my own own flesh and blood aside.

Location doesn't really matter as well - I will be either liquid enough to afford it, or sufficiently money-less to stay at home.
  20. Re: Strolencon?

    hmmm, vague...yet fascinating  :D
  21. Re: Strolencon?

    #61
I will GM too, but what sort of things do you want to play?

  22. Re: Strolencon?

    #62
I want to play a raging palladium romp of course. :)

I will play ANYTHING. More to the GM and his mood and what he wants to play. A favorite session that worked really well, an experiment with a new rule system, whatever. Use and abuse me with what you want. Just excited to meet everybody so can work with anything. (Don't read into that!)

Central will be a couple games of course. Real cons would have guest speakers and such. Since we will probably be a relatively small group, I think maybe we can plan a couple brainstorming sessions of some sort with a leader of some expertice on the matter.

Moonhunter: Leading a discussion of GM Tips of Mastery.
Manfred: Prince of Randomizers leads a session on random ideas for future developement
Strolen: Citadel 3.0: Discussion of User Ideas, Features, and Needs
Ria: How to fit 12 people confortable in a hotel room

I know a lot of it might end up off the cuff, but if we are to promote the Con in any semblence of order we should have a sort of series of events to help promote it....
  23. Re: Strolencon?

    #63
yep, it all sounds good. Whatever we play, we will have fun.

Back to step #1 though, where, when, and how many?
  24. Re: Strolencon?

    #64
Inner City NY: Best Western next to the 24hr laundromat
    June 23/24

    wow. Ok!

The ball is back in my court now, I guess  :P

What time is the 'Google Fu: The Ancient Art of Information Gathering' session on?
  27. Re: Strolencon?

    #67
    about 3:30pm, immediately following,

    1. "Sci-Fi needs more Love" Workshop (yes, Workshop! we'll be building stuff.)

    2. "Links. How to live a Happy Life." Symposium

    3. "Freetext, is it really free?" Pro and Con Debate

    then, dinner and cocktails.

then, special appearence by Dark Lord and his band, Hell's Prisoners

  28. Re: Strolencon?

    #68
Then, later that day: Dark Lord and Kalabar invites every Strolenite to a match of "Deathtrap Dungeon" in their basement, featuring REAL demons from Dark Lord's collection!
  29. Re: Strolencon?

    #69
  There's enough demand on how to fit 12 people into a hotel room to run a discussion on it?  That's hard to believe.  I'll play anything anyone wants to play.  Things I own are 3rd Ed D&D, d20 Modern, and Exalted.  I'm not very familiar with other systems, but I will make a valiant attempt to learn.  Why do I have a feeling that this is gonna end up being about thirty of us in a conference room with soda and pizza, and that's it?
  30. Re: Strolencon?

    #70
Because we are an online community scattered around the globe? ;)

Just wait to Strolen's Citadel - The Eurocon! It will feature even less than that ;)
  31. Re: Strolencon?

    #71
Since we've got various people volunteering to GM, how are we gonna work games?  I personally am not comfortable running a game for more than seven people, it bogs down way too much.  Are we gonna post up rosters, like "if you want in such and such game run by this person, sign up now", with finite slots?
  32. Re: Strolencon?

    #72
    That makes sense to me.

I am making January 31 the deadline for decisions one the when and where. The date looks solid and unchanging although whoever selected only Las Vegas is going to have to come out and explain if that is their only alternative to go.
  33. Re: Strolencon?

    #73
I hope the date won't change, I put in for vacation for that weekend.  :D
  34. Re: Strolencon?

10:27 pm: June 23-24th...Harlem, 3am, just us, our dice, and the dangers
10:27 pm: I know a low part of the Rio Grande if you get that far. I have friends on border patrol.
10:27 pm: Ahh,I get that. Had a case of dysentary once.
    10:27 pm: That is a T-shirt Muro!
10:27 pm: Don't eat the beef in Portugal either.
10:28 pm: hehe, need a better word than "dangers"
10:28 pm: Same ailment will follow.
    10:28 pm: "crack whores"?
10:28 pm: June 23-24th...Harlem, 3am, just us, our dice, and--- "WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT?! was that a gunshot?!"
    10:28 pm: LOL!!
10:29 pm: I jest of course...I rarely if ever get shot
10:29 pm: Dang, THAT is a keeper!
10:29 pm: Only happened to me twice there....I was only there for about 4 hours though.
10:29 pm: thats a long slogan..will have to convince my tee guy to go down the sleeve :)
    10:30 pm: hehe, 2 in 4
10:30 pm: your statistical analysis is not far off
10:30 pm: Up one sleeve, down the other. Have "WHAT THE HELL..." all jagged like the writer was startled.
10:31 pm: I see that the people there are fond of celebratory gun-fire.
    10:31 pm: nice!
10:32 pm: I wasn't going to carry, but I might have to.
10:32 pm: its the center of the world baby!! we not only have the best of everything but the worst too! we revel in extremes...like penguins adopted to the caribbean
10:32 pm: I hope you dont mean "cash" :) (carry)
10:32 pm: Will polish my Braveheart sword replica and get prepared.
10:33 pm: I just want to go to that dude's meat market from the Late Show with Letterman.
10:33 pm: you know, no one would even bat an eye if you walked down Broadway with your Claymore..where else can you get that!! :D
    10:33 pm: done! Meatmarket stop!
10:33 pm: we'll make a quick half day tour itenerary
10:34 pm: we'll pound some beers at the Slaughtered Lamb for lunch...quick swirl to around town...off to game, in some dark, dank, stench-filled conference room
    10:34 pm: Nice.
10:35 pm: I need a philly cheesesteak so I can compare what I should be expecting elsewhere.
10:35 pm: What about the food there?
10:36 pm: the food? do you even have to ask? its amazing...I can take you to better Singaporean restaurants than you have in Singapore :)
10:37 pm: wait, but seriously for a sec....lets assume 12 people come...where do you envision this con taking place? would you literally want to rent a conference room? it would be kinda...dunno..boring, in one of those, no?
10:37 pm: Yes, definately boring. Mabye a Denny's or IHOP instead.
    10:37 pm: ;)
    10:37 pm: oh boy
    10:37 pm: phew
    10:37 pm: No kidding
10:38 pm: hmmm, to think of perfect place...that is the question
10:38 pm: I am at your whim, never been to a con so I don't have a clue what I am doing. I am thinking about just changing it to Little Rock and everybody can hang out at the house.
10:38 pm: Maybe Madison Square Garden? One of the booths would be cool.
10:38 pm: I've heard CENTRAL pARK IS VERY SCENIC.
10:38 pm: I've never been to a con either :D
10:39 pm: very scenic by day...very deadly by night
    10:39 pm: Sorry,typos.
10:39 pm: where can we 'hang' all day and night if necessary...and....would everyone ideally stay in one hotel (thus making things easier)?
10:39 pm: Ria's thought of a couple games going on sounded very reasonable. Getting over 7 people in game always got to be a bit much.
    10:39 pm: SUUUUEEEYYYY!!
10:39 pm: I dont think I spelled Suey right
    10:39 pm: Sooey?
    10:39 pm: oink?
    10:40 pm: razorbacks?
10:40 pm: MSG would be surely cool, and extremely expensive...but I will look into it
10:40 pm: Yep, razorbacks. The only frick'n sports team in the entire state so EVERYBODY roots for them.
10:41 pm: It is obnoxioux and a little pathetic.
    10:41 pm: mmmmm
10:41 pm: Again, Ria's con experience, how much would a suite be? Would have a couple rooms and probably fit and sleep us all. Maybe two connected sweets if they have them. Split it amongst us and bring a pillow.
10:42 pm: Ozarks...never been, but looks all natury and purty, and not pooped upon
10:42 pm: Only poop is deer and racoon. (cue dueling banjos)
10:42 pm: aha! 2-3 connected suites! yes, that may work! will make teh calls on Monday!
10:43 pm: 2 presidents from Arkansas in 12 years, who woulda thunk it, and they're married! what are the odds!! :p
10:44 pm: so, near teh airport? or in some fancy spot (hotel)?
10:45 pm: Newark, NJ (20 minutes from downtown Manhattan may be a good bet too actually
10:45 pm: In between? A balance between convenience for a bit of sightseeing and cost.
10:46 pm: It would be nice if it was a decent area for a quick walkabout.
10:46 pm: okay, and this is a 3 day thing right? do you want to set aside one day for sightseeing and putzing around?
    10:46 pm: or...to each his own...or?
10:47 pm: Personally, I would want a day for sightseeing. Would assume our Eurpean friends would want to see something while they are there and I don't think a couple hours will do it.
10:48 pm: fair enough! I'll play tourguide for a day! fun!!
10:48 pm: How long was Ria talking on staying?
10:48 pm: Thurs to Sunday...I am to pick her up (as of now) at 8am Thurs
    10:49 pm: Nice early flight.
10:49 pm: she will then proceed to "hang out" with me as she mentions, until the cavalry arrives:p
10:49 pm: yeah! that 8am sucks!
10:49 pm: I will end up matching someone's itinerary.
    10:49 pm: :D
10:50 pm: thats a good idea!!..a few people should do that! (match) make for an efficient fun con
10:52 pm: Just hope Moon converts. Would be very good if he made it. I have only met him once for about a halfday at my aunts. Fun to meet people you talk to so often.
    10:52 pm: aunts?
10:52 pm: do tell the tale
10:53 pm: and I have to know!! what does MOONHUNTER look like? the smart guy from Ghostbusters?
    10:53 pm: Vin Diesel?
10:53 pm: A cross between bambi and skeletor.
10:54 pm: whoaw! I KNEW IT!!!
10:55 pm: If I was ever a witness in a crime, the prosecution would be screwed. I have an impression of him, could probably recognize him again, but I couldn't describe a person to save my life. It was a few years ago.
10:55 pm: hmmm, okay, fine leave it mysterious :D
  35. Re: Strolencon?

I love you guys, you know that right?

Okay.  Stream of consciousness time.  My experience, you can fit a lot of people in one hotel room, but only if they're sleeping.  If they're doing much else, it gets a bit crowded.  And I don't know about you, but all the people I've ever gamed with tend to spread out.

Suites.  Good idea, in theory, although speaking as a hotel employee, they're a lot more expensive than regular rooms.  We do need to check into prices and things.

We also want to find a place where we can game without disturbing anyone; sessions can get rather loud.

Personally, I vote the shirt just have the "What the HELL?" part, but that's just me.

I like the idea of maybe taking a day just to futz around the city together; I've never been to NY, and I bet a lot of other people haven't either.  Maybe a day to do that, a day for gaming, a day for... whatever.  Panels or discussions maybe.

Also, we're all dorks, maybe look into bringing dvds or something?  Movies that everyone must see to be human?

Muro, can you give us an estimate of what food runs there, so we know how much to bring?
  36. Re: Strolencon?

    Ria's a hardcore Con'er.

    Confirmed confirmation:

    June 22-24, New York City

Details will be detailed as we detail the weekend.

Runs the Gamut really, big place. You can pretty much get away with spending as much or as little as you like and still be full.

One night group dinner, my treat, btw. I wont take no for an answer!
  38. Re: Strolencon?

I want to play in an old warehouse by the waterside of Manhattan. Can we rent that? We could sleep there too.

!!! Dang, can I make an order and get it mailed to me?

I'll have a John Dory fillet, topped with Beluga caviar and served with a White Truffle and Saffron-infused Veloute sauce. And don't skimp on the caviar!

--I will be hosting a mini-booth. "Really Weird and Bad DVD Movies, Which I Must Rid From My Lame Collection/Library "

12 lucky contestants can win one of the DVD's I'm trying to get rid of.

--I can also look into hiring professional dwarves for tossing, if anyone is interested?

--We will dine one night, in the medieval, torture chamber themed and inspired Slaughtered Lamb Inn. Is everyone coming at least 21 yet?

--Our European friends will of course get the full-blown NYC tour if they so wish

--I am looking into renting a monstrously long loft in Soho, for gaming. It may be the perfect spot! Old Warehouse may be a decent idea to look into as well, actually!

--Of course there is always the chance we will end up in a Holiday Inn type of place and rent a conference room. I will try to find a better locale for the actual gaming, before resorting to a lame-ass conference room, this i vow!

--You have good taste Shadoweagle. Except, the saffron and truffle would overpower the subtle Dory fillet and caviar, thus making for a poor combination.  :P

If you come, we will EAT!! (like Kings).
