  1. Riddles

    #1
Alright, so I was in the Flashchat with Roack and Dozus last night, and I went upstairs to play with my puppy, then promptly fell asleep with the chat open. However, it was amazingly still open when I came down this morning, and so I checked the log, and encountered something nifty. A riddle! I love the buggers, so we could use this thread to post any we like or can find. If nothing else, someone might snag one to use in an adventure.

So, here's my starter, kudos of Dozus.

10:54 pm: Wanna hear a riddle?
    10:55 pm: Sure
10:55 pm: You are visiting a strange country in which there are just 2 kinds of people: Truthtellers & Liars. Truthtellers ALWAYS tell the truth, & Liars ALWAYS lie.
10:55 pm: You hail the 1st 2 people you meet and say, "Are you truthtellesr or liars?" The 1st person mumbles something you can't hear. The 2nd says, "He says he's a truthteller & so am I".
10:55 pm: Is the 2nd person a Liar or a Truthteller?

A simple logic puzzle. I always loved those two, but they're perhaps the easiest to figure out. Trial and error should give you the answer.

    Answer below.

Here's the logic: If a Liar is asked which type he is, he'll have to lie and say he's a truthteller. If a truthteller is asked the same, he'll reply truthfully that he's a truthteller. Neither will admit to being a liar. So, applying that to our first man, he says that he's a truthteller (which could make him either a truthteller or a liar), but he also says that the other told him he was a truthteller. Assuming the first man is a truthteller, then the other man must be a truthteller (because truthtellers must always speak the truth). However, if the first man is a liar, then the second man didn't tell him that he was a truthteller. A contradiction! Both types have to say that they're a truthteller, yet if the first man is a liar, this isn't true. Therefore, the first man must be a truthteller, and the second must be a truthteller.

Actually, the 1st man could be a liar.  The 2nd man didn't say "he is a truthteller," he said "He says he's a truthteller."  Since neither man can admit to being a liar, it must be assumed that Man 1 said he is a truthteller.  If Man 2 is a liar, he would have to say "He says he is a liar and I am a truthteller."  But since he said "He says he is a truthteller," then Man 2 must be telling the truth and only truthtellers can tell the truth.  So Man 2 is a truthteller; and Man 1 says he's a truthteller, though it really doesn't matter if he's telling the truth or not.

Here you go, Chaos: Quite some time ago when I first started in the citadel, I had a fondness for riddles, and I started a little competition. It's dwindled away now, of course, but there's still a fair few riddles in there. Answers will generally be a post or two below the riddle, so don't scroll down too far if you want to figure them out yourself!

    http://www.strolen.com/guild/index.php/topic,1185.0.html

And now that I read that thread again, I can see that I never Put an answer to the last riddle of mine, and Ria was right and won the riddle game with 10 points! Clearly she was the riddle-master of 2004! :p

Anyway, that game is over for me, but you can start it up again if you want :p

Yup, you got it.  If one's a nickel and one's a quarter, then one of them is not a nickel.

Stab or shoot one of them.  As he lies on the ground, screaming in agony, crying, and saying/asking, "You shot me! why did you shoot me?" you will know the other person is the Liar.

    Not quite a riddle.

If you can answer this correctly, you are only 9 more right answers away from getting a position as a Quantitative Modeler/Analyst, with a prestigious electronic brokerage firm, for a tidy rate of $125/hour.

A brick weighs a pound plus 1/2 a brick. How much does the brick weigh?

The correct answer will force me to post Question #2 (of 9)

    2 pounds...

You dig a hole 3 feet deep, 2 and a half feet wide, and 6 feet long.  How much dirt is in it?
  22. Re: Riddles

If it has dirt in it, you've not finished digging the hole!

Question #2 on Quant Analyst test

    2. Could a stack of pennies as high as the C.N. Tower fit into a 2x2x2 foot box? (A penny has a radius of 3/8 inch, and the C.N. Tower is 1900 feet high)

a correct answer post will lead to Question #3

    Question #3.

(Thanks Pariah, Scras, and val for participating!  :D)

Citizens of Canada pay as much income tax (percentage-wise) as they make dollars per week. What is the optimal salary in Canada?

    $50/week.

This can be determined by plotting the function and finding its maximum. (We could also do calculus if we didn't want to deal with it visually, but graphing was easier.)

Our function is: income = salary - (salary * percentage), where percentage = salary/100

The following is a graph of that function: http://tinyurl.com/nvpj6jv

As you can see, the plot is maximized at 50. Ergo, our optimum salary is $50.

Edit: Wow, that link got mangled.

    Having not looked at the thread for answers, the answer to this is 2 pounds. x = 1 + .5x, solve for x -> x = 2

    This is comparing volumes.

The stack of pennies is, ideally, a cylinder. We know that volume it's volume is area * height, which means V = h*pi*r^2. With a radius of 3/8ths of an inch, that gives us V = 1900*pi*(0.03125ft^2) = 5.82912699397 ft^3
    The box is 2x2x2, which gives us a volume of 2^3 = 8 ft^3

Thus, we can conclude that yes, the stack of pennies will fit inside the specified box.

I didn't get hammered, alas. But apparently a drink or two makes my brain quite effective at math. Yay. Got any math-utilizing jobs that don't mind if you drink? :P
  34. Re: Riddles

Note: your volume only is accurate if the pennies are melted/powdered prior to being packed in the box.  Considering the effective volume of the penny as a box, you have roughly 20% greater volume (4/pi) that still fits within the 8 square feet of the box.

  35. Re: Riddles

The pennies fit very easily in the box if you take them to a CoinStar machine, and then just bring the credit voucher, it's about the size of a typical shopping receipt.
