My wife just told me about a $300 dollar donation and I choked when I saw it. Thanks again manfred, you rock! (Moon and Muro, you rock too and you know it. Everybody else rocks too because submissions are just as valuable! All opinions matter on this decision!)

    So far

    manfred: 300
    manfred: 100
    moon: 50
    Muro: 250

So what we have here is $700 bucks in cold hard electronic cash! You now effectively own the server!

Thanks for the awesome support!! I love you for it and my wife no longer breathes down my neck when the bill comes through every month.

Right now I am paying 39.95 for the server. This one is fully managed which means if I have issued I yell help. The only issues I have had, however, is the down time and "fsck" of the drive because of errors they get. That has been all of our downtime so far and that has happened 3 times so far. I also have issues with ftp on my main account and I have to login and restart the ftp server everytime I start site modifications. That annoys me greatly!

None of this should not happen and I am not happy and I know you aren't either.

On the flip side of this host, the moved me to another server about 3 weeks ago, but I still get errors out of the forums so I know people are occassionally not able to get to the site and probably have to refresh. No downtime on the new server yet is my point.

The new host that I have pretty much decided on is 44.95 a month and it is unmanaged which sort of puts me in the hotseat as far as administrating the box. That, I don't think, is a huge issue since I would only have to install a couple things and then do some performance tweeking. I can handle that. All security stuff and OS associated stuff (like upgrading and such) the host still does, they just don't do hand holding.

The thing that sold me was the solid reviews that I have read everywhere and the following:

    Q. How much CPU can I really expect?

    A. Generally speaking you can expect to see the full speed of both processors minus the slight overhead imposed by Virtuozzo. We maintain each VDS at less than 10% utilization giving you and your customers the availability to 'burst' when needed. If a VDS becomes too CPU intensive the Virtuozzo software allows us to transfer that account to another physical server with about 10 seconds of downtime.

    Q. So your saying we can expect both processors available when needed?

    A. Yes. We do _not_ overload our servers. We work hard to provide you a solid product at an affordable price. We depend on your referrals and would never place your account on an overcrowded server. It isn't worth loosing a customer just to make a couple extra dollars by cramming accounts on an at capacity machine.

    Q. How many accounts do you put on each server?

    A. The amount per physical server varies based on the existing customers on that server and the resources they require. You will _not_ see an over crowded VDS. We want you as a customer long term

We have metrics which govern memory, CPU and network utilization among other resources we monitor. Generally speaking if we see the utilization at or above 10% for a 10 minute period we stop adding accounts to that server. With Virtuozzo we can easily move accounts between servers with just 10 - 30 seconds of downtime.

    Q. How much bandwidth is available to the VDS?

    A. The physical server is allocated 100Mbps. You can expect to see at or near the maximum. As an example - from one of our VDS servers:

The more I read about this company the more crappy all the other hosts look. The biggest thing is that it is unmanaged, which may or may not be a big factor depending on what I screw up. But I haven't screwed up anything to my knowledge yet. They will fix it anyway, just charge like $30/half hour to fix stuff.

The easiest thing is to stay put obviously. Moving will require 1-3 days of downtime where posts will either be lost or not accepted.

Just looking for your thoughts and opinions on the deal.

If it's better than this, go for it! And it does look better.

For the move itself, I'd say we are better off with one day not posting than loosing posts, which is extremely annoying. So do the usual major announcements when the day approaches, then lock up the main site. Keep the forums open just in case. Let's hope we don't get any more special chars. (Can something be made against them during the move? Do some testing on what we are getting into.)

As for the money, it is only logical after I have wasted such a great part of my life on this website! :)

Not such a big deal considering alternative venues to sink cash in. Merely putting my money where my mouth is, so to speak. Also want to have our main debugger available around the clock. Glad to make your hands more free.

    ---

So, though we are afraid of it, do the move.

700 bucks, eh? Can't quit your dayjob yet. ;)

Glad that it removed the explosive elements from your wife's perspective of this site. When you grow rich from hosting it, you can all retire to the Bahamas!
