Okay, it's time to decide on the next quest.  I intend to kick it off on September 1st.  So, let me know what you want to do for a quest.

The options are Item: Transports, Lifeforms: Unique, Locations: Fortifications, Societies: Artistic/Performance, or something to do with the Sky (which would need sky in the freetext).  Any questions?

    Oh, and vote.

MY GOD, IT'S RETURNED FROM THE DEAD TO REVENGE ITSELF UPON US ALL!
  3. Re: The Son of Quest

Thats tough because as soon as you tag the type of sub to be a quest, doesn't that tag all of the old subs in that same category to become a Quest submission? Like if you tagged the Lifeforms category, would it put the quest tag on all Lifeform subs previously posted.
  4. Re: The Son of Quest

    #4
Is there a way to fix that? :?:
  5. Re: The Son of Quest

Besides just being a darn good idea, SKY being a freetext entry eliminates that issue.

Sky has the advantage is that you can put in anything having to do with air, so we can have floating castles, flying creatures, j-x11 rocket packs, societies of airshipment, and a variety of things.  Vote Sky. Vote now.

    Terrible selection

    No, it does not.

    Terrible selection

I'd say less "terrible" than it is "eclectic"... Are we choosing neglected categories or something?r

On the subject of "Sky", I would say that it is precisely it's open-endedness that makes it a bad choice. If we have flying castles, flying dragons, sky gods, jetpacks, and airplanes all in the same Quest, how are we going to judge?
  9. Re: The Son of Quest

Yes, the point is to choose something that is neglected. If it is something of a challenge, then you will earn the Quest points (and they may be higher depending on percieved difficulty) so it should even out...probably.

No, there is no feature to suck up old posts. A quest is a quest. It starts and ends, only those in the time period will be counted.

Sky would take moderation that is greater in scope than the Shards quest since it does go over all categories...which the quest can actually NOT do at the moment. So, if we choose sky, it will have be at least defined to a single category, then it still must be moderated inside that category.
  10. Re: The Son of Quest

    #10
If sky gets chosen, we can define it more then.

As for the selection, I basically went through and picked out the categories with fewer than twenty submissions, then I picked a set from those.  A theme quest was requested, which is why the Sky is up there.
  11. Re: The Son of Quest

    So...
    Any other votes forthcoming?
    I'm excited!
  12. Re: The Son of Quest

Yes, I cast my vote too:
    SCIENCE FICTION.

As it is not on the list, I vote here.
  13. Re: The Son of Quest

    #13
That is worse than Sky because it ranges so broadly.

We have Pern and Darkover which are Science Fiction to the Spectrum of Asimov and Gibson.  Maybe a division inside science fiction... Robots?

The Sky: 3, Transports 3, Unique Lifeforms 3
  17. Re: The Son of Quest

    #17
The citadel has many, many lifeform threads. I therefore urgently request you, dear citadellians, to vote for Transports!

I want to write up a nice interplanetary cargo hauler!
  18. Re: The Son of Quest

    #18
Yeah, I wouldn't mind doing Transports at all. :D
  19. Re: The Son of Quest

    #19
I'm not going to try and persuade you to vote for one option or another

    Yes I am, MWAHAHAHA

There are not very many submissions that fall into the Transport category, only 16. This section could really benefit from a quest generated influx of material. The quests cause us to really dig deep into the creative vaults to come up with some really cool ideas. Even if Transports isnt selected as the quest winner, I still encourage Citadellians to submit their transportation ideas, as great as a quest heading is, it isn't essential.

    Make with the Transports!

Unique lifeforms are solitary creatures, one of a kinds, not new races. These are the bizarre alchemical hybrids, freakish monsters, and the thrice cursed victims of the gods. There are also only 16 submissions as Unique Lifeforms. This section could be quite easy since there is no need to create historical settings, social and economic dynamics, just coming up with really cool, weird, and totally bizarro-tron monsters.

    Unique Monsters are Winning! GwaHaHaHa

11 Fortifications, just 11! This is a travesty. In a genre as thick with castles as the typical swords and sorcery, the fact that we have just 11 castles and fortifications is inexcusable.

Castles are going to get some attention from me no matter what!

Artistic and Performance societies has TWO entries. TWO.

And one of the two is mine!

And Finally, the Sky. I think this is the only idea from the previous challenge that made it to the second list, and it didn't do well the first time around. Aim High, the sky's the limit, into the wild blue yonder. As a medium with few limitations, why should we not pick the Sky?

Besides, if it isnt picked, it will keep showing up on each quest challenge until it is selected. So I voted for it.

I am nothing, if not persistant.  Dig in your paws and PULL!!!!  But who knows, maybe I will be on a new kick by then.

Aside from the quest:  You know... we could have a contest. Who can post the largest number of submissions of quality in a 72 hour period.  Announce it a Wed or Thursday, go live as of 0001 GMT.

This would be based on the total XP gained for the period. (Thus you would get more for larger posts).  OR based on the number of 4xp+ posts you make per day.

Note: not allow things that were in the work space/ Scroll Comments do not count.

Or the contest could be again, the largest number of posts, but in this case over a week and only in the categories with the least number of submissions.  (thus it would change... so you would have to be fast... if it takes you two days to post a certain kind of post, but it is no longer the lowest numbered category by that time.....)

Just throwing those out there.... we now return to the regularly scheduled thread.
  22. Re: The Son of Quest

    #22
Interesting challenge, how many other people do you think we could get interested in it?
  23. Re: The Son of Quest

    #23
Well, I have ideas for all of them now, but I hesitate to post them, just in case one of them becomes the winner
  24. Re: The Son of Quest

6 days until new quest, and a simple two votes can tip the scales.
  25. Re: The Son of Quest

Actually, it'll only show up as long as someone keeps asking for it.
  26. Re: The Son of Quest

The current system seems to have, in my honest opinion, some deficits.
    1. The time between each quest is too short. Right now a quest is a chore and not a joy. When they hit you like machine gun fire, you know they occur too frequently. Perhaps that is fine with some, but to me it is unneccessary noise that makes them more a nuisance than a bonus. I fear the users will ignore quests should this continue. This pertains in particular to the mature part of our crowd.
    2. The quest planning could also need some more time. To create compelling quests, I believe it is prudent that we plan well and long, to truly come up with something exciting and genuine. The present two week deadline in which only neglected subjects and old, recycled ideas are accepted seem poor to me. Personally I have a career, but I would still like to have a say in the quest planning. Currently that would be difficult, as the timeline per se fits students and unemployed, and not those of us with demanding jobs.
    3. There is still not any general agreement concerning the finalists. I consider the 4.5 limit preposterous and the arguments, though articulate and sincere, have not persuaded me of anything. I truly believe that a hall of honour says more than a high vote. A high vote is an indication of quality, but not bullet proof evidence of superiority. You all know that posts are evaluated differently, and one 4.6 might easily be poorer than a 4.3. An indication of this would be the 4.6 had no HoH's, while the 4.3 might be flooded with HoH's. Therefore I say that to neglect goldens and halls of honour is a great injustice and insult to that submission. High votes are too closely tied to herd voting, tactical voting and the audience in general to be the lone determining factor of quality.

The current system seems to have, in my honest opinion, some deficits.
    1. The time between each quest is too short.

Actually I prefere the quick turn around time.  It is a contest. It is supposed to stretch the normal limits.

Also, if we have a quicker turn around we have the momentum from the previous quest to keep us going. The lag between the previous quest and the then next quest to be the reason there was so little interest.

    2. The quest planning could also need some more time. To create compelling quests, I believe it is prudent that we plan well and long, to truly come up with something exciting and genuine. I have a demanding job and I can join the quest. And we have been planning this next once since the first one started.  It is a contest. Can you not squeeze a post in a two week span?

    3. There is still not any general agreement concerning the finalists. I consider the 4.5 limit preposterous and the arguments, though articulate and sincere, have not persuaded me of anything. Again, there has been no compelling argument to eliminate the existing system either.  It is a contest, not an enshrinement. Plus all the other systems we have so far provided have been either more complicated OR allow for the friendship networks to skew the results. No system is perfect. .

Quests were originally created with the idea to generate a number of posts in a given category or type. By basing it on our normal criterias, votes and such, we get a more "standardized" and "fair" result.  Besides HoH votes are cheap and easy to do.

Someone of 3rd level or higher is bored, and something gets HoH votes. HoH as we are currently using is not indicator we originally hoped it would be. (And this is a discussion for another thread.) Thus not that great of an indicator of quality, just of popularity OR the lack of submission on a given day. Besides anything hit with an HoH will get more votes, with an unusual disposition towards higher votes.

Well, I'd definitely drop off the quest race. As I said: It is perfect for people with less than demanding jobs and students. For people with an active social life, children and family in addition to the job it is difficult.

Make no mistake: I am lobbying for myself and people in my situation here. Yes, like Shadoweagle said (in the admin forum): We might not be as relevant in the current day situation, as we are more or less inactive relics of the past.

It is difficult. Sometimes I can, but that also means I must get up to date on all the previous posts and opinions around this place, AND I have to respond to the onslaught of replies that are bound to come (we are a verbose lot here at the citadel). So, my answer given the circumstances I just stated is more likely to be no.

There is no compelling reason to keep the current one either. All I say is that we take Hall of Honours into regard in some way or another. Shadoweagle came up with a really good model if you ask me (2 Hall of Honours minimum AND minimum 4.5 average score). We might also want to require a minimum number of votes for the entry to be accepted (perhaps even not nominate any finalists until all quest entries had the required number of votes).

Quests were originally created with the idea to generate a number of posts in a given category or type. By basing it on our normal criterias, votes and such, we get a more "standardized" and "fair" result.  Besides HoH votes are cheap and easy to do.

And what makes high votes any different from this? As I have said earlier I can find hundreds of inflated submissions with scores above and beyond reason.
Hall of Honour is inflated, votes are inflated and both these inflated mechanisms should count!

    As should goldens.

As much as that is a good idea, shouldn't we ask for Ria's input on that particular change of moderationship? (that's not a real word, but you get the idea)
