Statistic Ideas
#1What about statistics? Record peoples' votes, calculate their average score awarded to other Strolenites and show some decent statistics? So if someone HoHs and 5 votes some guy alot he or she has "Fan of " labeled in her / his profile...
Example:
The imaginary user "Thomas from England" awards, lets say Scrasamax, with 20 HoHs and an average score of 5.0 per submission. With the HoHs the average is boosted way beyond 5.0 and "Thomas from England" gets the label "Rabid fan of Scrasamax" in his profile. Only 1 fan entry possible: The person whose subs you love the most.
Would placate some of the egos around here :p -
Re: Statistic Ideas
#2I split AG's suggestion because A) it is a good one and B) I need more. Plus, I need the formula so if anybody likes word problems, you can save me from doing it. :)
There were some other good ideas somewhere about giving people some kudos for having high quantity/rating of a certain category.
Moon has the 100 posts in 100 days thing that we can work with still.
Most prolific voter should get some shout out. ;) (not HoHs though, those should still be special and not just to be used to be used)
These all need some fleshing out to become very specific to be useable. But these are the ones I remember at the moment.

Re: Statistic Ideas
#3Aye! Got another idea. It arose in the wake of the Cheka debate.
-What if you calculated peoples' awarded scores in general? I usually do not give out very high scores and neither do CP. There could be an option in our profile where it stood what you give out... What you get in... If you are more liberal with HoH's than the average...
CaptainPenguin
Rabid fan of Ancient Gamer
Average awarded score: 3.53 (Hard to please).
Average quality of submissions: 4.2 (Skilled)
Hall of Honour award frequencey: 0.001 per day (Very rare)
Cheka Man
Rabid fan of Ancient Gamer
Average awarded score: 4.9 (Too kind)
Average quality of submissions: 3.1 (Average)
Hall of Honour award frequency: 2 per day (Extremely Often)
Post-Nazi
Rabid fan of Ancient Gamer
Average awarded score: 1.45 (Jerk)
Average quality of submissions: 2.5 (Needs training)
Hall of Honour award frequency: 0 per day (Never) -
Re: Statistic Ideas
#4Also, in each profile could be a box called "Fans". Everyone who has awarded you more than a 4.5 average is listed there! -
Re: Statistic Ideas
#5Well this goes into the direction "Users who bought X also bought these: ___________".
Which is a great feature for pages as Amazon and the like. For us, it would show in a roundabout way how users like other's work. With the info of what does the given user like, it could make an alternative search feature. "I like this guy's work... let's see what does he like himself, maybe there is interesting stuff, too. Oh, and these two guys seem to like each other - they could have similar, or complementing works."
One day, when we get above 10.000 submissions (and trust me, we will get there), we may find great use for a searching option like this.
Aside, I am not that sure about displaying negative preferences... and mostly, we learn about them anyway. Might be interesting, but can too easily inflame certain moods. ;) -
Re: Statistic Ideas
#6Showing negative preferences? Like...
Most hated player: Post Nazi (Anti-HoHed 102 times)?
That is bull, but if a guy has 2.0 as his average vote, that could and should be shown if you ask me.
If the guy has 1.0-2.0 vote average over 10 votes an automail should be sent to Strolen, if you ask me. The question about what he does here would arise. Yes, such users have existed. (Hate/Vengeance-voting and all that)
LABELS! WE NEED LABELS! Okay, this is the idea: We have several genre and category labels... Dark Fantasy, High Fantasy, Horror Fantasy, Steampunk, Post-apocalyptic, (Yes, MH, I know you do not consider this a genre:) Sci-fi, Contemporary, Gothic, Historical gaming, Sword and Planet, Sword and Sorcery, Epic, Low level, etc...
The idea is that the reviewers can put one label on each sub they review, if they want to: Much in the fashion we HoH and Gold stuff. Then the statistics engine could calculate what labels a sub has, all the subs of an author or even all the subs of the Citadel and display these statics where appropriate.
Why does not MoonHunter have an opinion on this? It is very MoonHunter-ish ;) -

No.
Second, no need to harass Strolen with useless e-mails.
And first, there is no simple way to code this without false alarms. Sometimes we have numerous miserable submissions - and we vote low. People sometimes vote low on subs they do not think worthy of high votes - we had quite a few moments of high voting, too. Darn, I have serial-voted low a few times on stuff that wasn't worth the accolades.
Lastly, the question about what a user is doing here if he is not voting high is just wrong. We may get lucky and get an extremely critical user, that votes low on many subs, and always writes in detail why, along with some ideas. That would be a 'reviewer'. Most of us get only to comments. -
Re: Statistic Ideas
#8So, you say that a user who has voted 241 times, with an average of 1.56 per vote, is a valuable addition? Ah, okay. That makes sense :p
The number 10 was meant as a minimum number of votes for new users (so that if a new user arrives and votes 2, he won't get reported). After that all votes ever are counted.

#9First, just to address an off topic

What is one person's science fiction is another person's fantasy/ science fantasy. Is Star Trek Post Accoplyptic, because it is after WWIII?
If we break those definitions down farther it just get ugly. Nobody is going to like these definitions for longer than a week or two after we set them up. We have seen the issues we have had with our existing categories and subcategories and those are generally concrete in nature... yet people still sort of pick haphazardly. Given another set of Subjective Tags we will create a mess we have to clean up later.
I am sorry I did not generate any expanded definitions for subcategories. I got distracted and busy. Of course, I am not the only admin who can create these things.... and nobody else did it either. I will work on it now and have some examples for you.
Back to topic
No more damm statistics. It sounds great and could have some computational value. However, you don't seem to remember EXP, Energy Points, and so on... These were valid statistical labels (though oddly named) that caused so many problems in the end WE GOT RID OF THEM.
All these labels will do is create animosity: No... don't vote on my submission, you always vote low!... oh you are a hater of my work, I disregard your comments and delete them... oh I always vote High on his posts, so I can keep my fan status, because he is my friend. Do you see how these statistics might be used for "ill"? And these are the moderately benign obuses of the labels. Imagine what happens when certain people score them and they get into chat... the screaming match that will occur.
Sure some people are annoying... they vote low. Some vote obscenely HIGH. Statistically speaking... they even out. The community will weed those out and with enough activity bothersome voters (on both sides of the spectrum) will be adjusted.
To go with Manfreds: Well this goes into the direction "Users who bought X also bought these: ___________".
We do not have a binary (bought/ not bought) state for our posts. We have a continumn 1-5 Members should be taught to follow the links or the links to people's pages made more blatent... thus you can find all the submission of a given person.

#10
Personal Statistics:
Average length of submissions
HoH's Recieved: (less important because they are already listed anyway)
Average Submission Rating
Average Vote
Average Submissions Per Day/week/month/year whatever
Average votes/comments per day/week/month/year whatever
Citadel Statistics:
Average Submissions per day
Percentages of submission catagories
Top Ten Posters
Top Ten Average Ratings Overall (for players)
Top Ten Voters
These are just ideas. It will not bother me if none of these are added.
