Update
#1This *IS* still going to happen, at least for me and I hope you are still interested. This is what I see happening and is the plan in my mind.
Kate is still working on the graphics for the RPG portion of the site. This will be the very first step to get that up and running.
Once the graphics are up (or even before when I get time) I need to set up a help desk for trouble tickets. We can cannibilize this for the nonrpg site as well and have to come up with another name for it.
Once the site is ready for the world then I will look into the business sides.
Florida, for one, only requires a DBA to do business. So does Oregon and some others. I have the capability to doing it in Illinois but haven't found out about the DBA thing yet. An LLC may not be required as we are just starting out. So a DBA is step two. Know how it works where you were looking?

The merchant account thing. More start up costs that we can't afford. So because of that we have to go with a fee based system till we are up and running. Examples and suggested ones are:
http://www.paypal.com
http://www.paysystems.com/IBA.htm
http://2checkout.com/
Once we are established I think the hands down winner is http://www.modernbill.com/
Look at domain reselling: godaddy.com enom.com

Then get the hostmatters account and go live. Not sure how to do that, but hey. Figure that out later.
Other plans I have.
I think that the http://www.reunionhomepage.com/ can be useful. I am already halfway through building a automatic mySQL script to set up databases and a completely customizeable template to start new sites on. http://www.strolen.com/reunion/test/ Can sell multiple sites on a single account as well and can charge hosting fees as well as 'rental' fees for the software that runs the site. There are a lot of other crappy sites like this that are done a lot worse. Once I get all the functionality, then different templates can be created. It is easy to change graphics, and that can be yet another charge. That will probably be all me making this work. (strolen:strolen if you want to check the limited admin stuff at the moment)
That is my overall plan in a nutshell. Chances are I will be either going to college next year or getting out of the AF in the ROTC early out program so I am certain I will have time to play with this at great lenght, and it may just take that long to get the alumni site working. That WILL happen for me regardless of what else happens. I think there will always be a market for it. After all, I already got two accounts without even trying and being sort of against it. Word of mouth is a POWERFUL tool!
Just looking to rejuvinate this thought a little more. -
Update
#2I still believe in starting this business. However, I do not know how much I can contribute. These U of Phoenix classes are horrific tight now, the work load is overwhelming. Currently I have to write a 1050-1750 word paper every week, and for me that is tough. My desire to learn php is still there but has been placed on the back burner for now. I have a little bit of money so I can contribute financially and if given enough of lead time I should be able to contribute some content.
For now my limitations are:
I am tweaking up my OTS package.
I am taking leave and visiting family member who are not doing so well
- Most likely I will have to head out to a funeral in the near future
University of Phoenix has a crushing workload
I am perpetually broke, but can dig up some funds here and there
Anyway, that is enough whining, I know that this will only happen if we make it happen. And that is just a matter of doing it.
