Proposed New Vote Format
#1Now first off I have to say I have no idea how this would be implemented since my computer programming knowledge ends with the options button to set the difficulty on Age of Empires II. But, I have had an idea that might be a worth looking into.
I think a 2 vote system might bring about a more consistent level of voting within the citadel, in part based off of the judging system I've seen in televised events, most notably ice skating and drift racing.
The dual vote requires two votes per person on a submission.
Vote 1 is the technical vote, and would be a basic vote on things like basic use of paragraphs, spelling, presence of typos and the like. A 5 would be perfect, a four is good with only minor problems, a three has a few problems, most likely paragraphing etc, with a 1 being the sixteen word long submission of Him Assassinn wiff Beg Sowrd.
Vote 2 is the creative vote, with the core of the idea being merited by itself outside of technical concerns. A five has the Whoa-factor of coolness, on down to the so-overdone and poorly so dual-poisoned crossbow wielding dros assassin of a 2, to the 1 of I'm a poerson!
The sidebar of the submission where the vote is displayed could have three votes, a black technical vote, a green or pretty blue creative artistic vote, and the composite vote between the two displayed in swords.
Weighting
It is another thing that sometimes pops up, a sub with a single vote can be ranked higher than a similar sub of the same score that has multiple votes. Maybe some sort of weighting/ranking system could be employed to make sure that a single vote 5 doesnt outrank a 9 vote 5.

#2Vote apartheid? The native speakers vs. the rest of the world? :p
Nah, seriously I think I understand where you want to go with this. Todays voting system is far from perfect, but this is too technical. Whatever you settle for, keep it to a one vote system. -

#3I will wait to give my opinion until we get a few more responses. I am interested in this discussion! -
Re: Proposed New Vote Format
#4I see where you're going with this, and I like it. No clue how you would do it... -
Re: Proposed New Vote Format
#5I think it sounds good in theory. In fact it sounds great in theory to have a more accurate and aesthetically pleasing voting system. I am just not sure it would be prudent in practice. We have (I think) many folks who can barely be bothered to vote and comment once. Additionally, I think that the majority of Citadelians (who post) have few-to-no issues with the technical aspects of a submission. We have some great writers, and there are spell checks and such for editing.
This system does sound like a novel idea, but since I have no clue how easy or difficult it is to implement technically, I'll hold off further comment for now.
I'm all for the Weighting thingy though! -

#6Apartheid? Isn't that a bit melodramatic? -
Re: Proposed New Vote Format
#7I have to second Muro's thoughts: nice but unusable idea.
Weighting... yes! -

Yep. It is.
I like to exaggerate wildly to prove a point ;)

Re: Proposed New Vote Format
#9Oh yeah, also had an idea for the Random submissions on the right hand bar. I dont know if it is possible, but could it be done that a sub could be made more likely to pop up in the random bar based on the number of votes/comments on it? I could see it being useful if the subs with fewer comments get cycled through the randomizer, get more face time than some that already have a dozen or more comments. Could be bad for codices and scrolls, but give some get some.
Also what if there was an XP bonus for voting on low vote/comment subs? something not set in stone, but after X amount of time, votes and comments on a sub with fewer than y comments/votes would be worth double XP? Say after a couple of months is submission only had two comments/votes, the XP value of voting and commenting would be doubled until the sub in question had 5 comments/votes.
Just an idea.
If the -3 XP for deleting a comment (double posting) deters strolenites from actually deleting a comment, (changing it into a oops, double comment box) then the bonus of extra XP from commenting might get some interest. I don't think it would be overpowered since it would only grant at the most 4XP for a comment, as oppossed to the normal 2 xp for a long comment. -
Re: Proposed New Vote Format
#10In the end, it depends on how tricky will be the database calls. Surely possible as far as I can understand it.
Using Random Submissions to show more the little noticed submissions: yes, please.
Double XP for comments on 'forgotten' submissions: well, why not? -
Re: Proposed New Vote Format
#11hmmmm.
Still not a fan of the double voting, but perhaps being more specific about what you should actually be voting for.
The votes are not a grammar, punctuation grade....the votes are for the "idea" in the sub. The core of the site, the sharing of ideas. Perhaps that needs to be more clear.
Not sure why but the comments on grammar and spelling and subtracting points for that has really been bugging me lately...I mean, really bugging me...a lot. It is not about the speling it is abowt the idea. If I undrestand the idea, than that is the hole point! Sure, grammar can detract, but it doesn't change the core of the submission does it? -
Re: Proposed New Vote Format
#12Having been cited in the past for concentrating on spelling and grammar, my understanding early on was there was an expectation of quality with subs, both in idea and presentation. I know I have taken pains to make submissions as well presented as I could manage.
The following phrase has given license to critique on more then just the idea:
Fifth: The Gold Standard
If your post could not be part of a published fantasy novel, it needs work. That is what you should aim for.
That said, some of the recent commentary, such as a post being too RPG, have bothered me, though I stayed out of that discussion.
Personally, I want critique and comments - both on the idea and the quality of the writing, though I have been far too inactive on the site lately.

Honestly some of the remarks that have edged toward that remark has made me irritated as I thought that is what this site was based off of. But that is just me. I could see if the entire post was slammed packed with 3d6 and DnD rules and what-not but for something to be too RPG for a fantasy site that was founded on RPG and its materialism just doesn't seem right. -
Re: Proposed New Vote Format
#14Just want to say, I have never quite understood this comment: (which I see a lot over the years)
"...I took a half-point off for spelling and grammar/punctuation"
What?? :what: Is that you, Mrs. Haversham? Please don't tell my mom!
In closing, I agree with Strolen's comment on that. -

Re: Proposed New Vote Format
#17Initially I liked the idea of a dual vote, but the more I thought about it the more the idea of inviting people to play grammar Nazi just was kinda blah.
Perhaps rewording the short blurbs beside each vote number to include something extra along the lines of "please remember to vote on the idea/concept itself and ignore any minor grammar/punctuation errors you may encounter."
It would serve as a gentle reminder to vote on the concept and it usability/detail then on how perfectly it's written. I'm pretty sure the majority of people come here to have fun and contribute great ideas, having to strive for perfect grammar/punctuation or lose vote points just gets in the way of both.
It's also sad to see a sub lose a half a point or more from spelling, and then after the author corrects it never receiving a updated/increased vote for their effort.
All that said however, I can agree with people pointing it out in the comments area if they notice something significant in their sub that could use an edit, just not docking vote points for it. (such as when a sub has forgone the use of line breaks between paragraphs and presents itself as a solid wall of text, which is a literal eye sore to read)
