Temp SF (diff then genre)
#1How about this interim solution?

Call it whatever and maybe we have it encopass all 'others' and then we make up subcategories for it. SF then has a home in the current setup. No crazy mass changes to the site or crazy coding by me. Get a feel for what we want to do with it. Perhaps attract a few new people with a SF interest.
Maybe one category could be genre and the other similiar the fantasy main categories.

Might have to mix it up a bit but you get the point.
If we get a few hundred then it will be time to start thinking about having a new section?
Thoughts on this angle?
Still need a forum board too. Give me some thoughts on a title and description or else I will just make up something stoooopid. Then we can hunt down the SF stuff and pop it in there and have our SF board.
(and yes, we can still figure out some kind of graphic change for the SF (whatever) main category if that is the overall feeling. That would be pretty easy to do, force a theme for that category, you wouldn't get to choose it though.)

Re: Temp SF (diff then genre)
#3Can I still scream that I am really, really, really against this.
If you think we occasionally put things in wrong categories, genre categories will be worse.
Okay... I feel like the oracle that nobody believes.... but it is true darn it. -
Re: Temp SF (diff then genre)
#4Oh and who is going to move all the existing submissions to the new system?
And what is our criteria for shifting?
And where do the supers things go?
Or the historical? -
Re: Temp SF (diff then genre)
#5An admin (or author) who can recongnize that a submission is SF. I can't think that there are that many and we do them as we see them. People will find them for us or admins will catch them as they browse. It is not something that has to be done NOW. I can happen slowly and effortlessly as they are accidently stumbled upon.
There is a super subcategory...and a historical one, there are as many genres as you want as these new categories are *very* generically separated as I don't expect to have a huge influx of them BUT we still have somewhere for them to go if somebody wants to put them there.
Moon, it is not a big deal, really. Anything that is not fantasy can go there. Let people use their best judgement. If something is in the wrong category, it is not a show stopper. I have never seen it to be a huge issue yet and I don't expect it to be. I have maybe changed 2 or 3 and I am the only one that can change major categories. -
Re: Temp SF (diff then genre)
#6Not to poke the proverbial bear with a stick, but the only person who really has a problem with a submission being posted in the wrong category is you, Moon. -
Re: Temp SF (diff then genre)
#7The uber categories puts all types NPC, location, items, in one. That is just going to be a heart ache down the line. So three or so years from now, I can hear you bitching about having to fix all these.
Maybe if the genre was a 3rd switch. That would work. The default would be fantasy, unless switched. So I can search by NPC and see all the genres, or search by genre and see all the various categories in the genre, or click both Fantasy and NPC and get only those. I would be less vocal. In fact, I might even be vaguely supportive.
Genre, Category/ type, Primary sort, Secondary Sort.
Fantasy is the default, and is that way unless changed.
"Every" would be a genre sort option (i.e. ignore genre in the sort)
It avoids future sorting issues.
Genre still has issues. There are just a lot of fit issues. I have some supers that are perfect Urban Fantasy fits. I have them as supers because that is the campaign where they came from. Manfred was even confused (originally) why I put the supers tag on a couple of them. Where does urban fantasy go? Okay, all but two of those that could have the urban fantasy tag are mine... I know... sorry.. I am a problem child.
Steampunk is sci-fi even it is alchemical?
Science Fantasy might be an option?

Re: Temp SF (diff then genre)
#8Did you read the first post?
This suggestion has SF as a main category, just like items and npcs. The first subcategory would be the genre, so you could have as many genres as you need although most of the ones you mention seem so obscure as to be silly. The second category would be items, npcs, locations all the major categories that we have now that are pretty genre independent. So 3 years from now when we finally have 1269 submissions and decide to split them off into a SF site, we will have them already in their major categories just requiring them to be subcategorized (because the new site will mirror the fantasy site except for subcategories), like we did for the 1.0 to 2.0 split.
The 3rd switch that you are talking about is the entire exact thought in having a SF only part of the website. Go back and read the other thread that I temporarily abandoned for this one...I think you will see that it is exactly as you describe. You can have only Fantasy, only SF, or both. http://www.strolen.com/guild/index.php/topic,3199.msg42954.html#msg42954
The suggestion in this thread wasn't even something I really wanted but I suggested it because you didn't want it the other way but there is a need for something.
Going back to work on links ;) -
Re: Temp SF (diff then genre)
#9My point was that it was a forked branch added below the base, instead of branching at the top.
So if I search arctic, I should get all the posts for arctic fantasy and sci-fi, unless I filter for specifics.
In 3 year.... I remember the version 1 and 2 split. Do we really want to do that again, even with a smaller scale?
Working on links is good. Though can we limit the number of radio button you can click... people might do every button just because they want to be "artificially important" or are just smarmy. -
Re: Temp SF (diff then genre)
#10I see your point on the fork. Don't have a response yet.
Links. If they click on everything then they will be at the bottom of all the lists. If they want decent placement they have to decide to sacrifice something.

Re: Temp SF (diff then genre)
#16If anyone would be interested in starting a spaghetti/revisionist/trailblazing western rp and/or collaborate on a western-themed saga (submission) please let me know :D
I was thinking, the Oregon Trail. The year is 1843, the year of the great western migration. The road is being travelled by pioneers, trailblazers, gunmen, scouts, mountain men, natives, escaped slaves, the poor, the downtrodden, those escaping their pasts, those seeking their futures, those who were seeking gold, those who loved exploring the unknown! The good, the bad, and the ugly...The Oregon Trail was for them.
Then it gets weird.

Personally, I don't care how many genres you want. We can add 100. But I think we can narrow it down to a manageable amount of categories where stuff will mostly fit without it becoming unruly. Urban Fantasy? What the heck is that? I think we can be more general and still get the point across then going that far down. If you use that one that many of the silly ones on that last list I posted would be just as applicable. Just need to pick the best top level genres that successfully, if not perfectly, broadly encompass the rest of the obscure genres as possible.
I will add this category this weekend. It will take me an hour or so to put up all the new links and lookups. If there is no comments then I will just put it up as is.
I would appreciate some help on descriptions of each genre.

Re: Temp SF (diff then genre)
#19Bangsian Fantasy are pornograpic stories based on the characters of the Bugs Bunny cartoon. Seriously. :p
---
(Psst: add the overused 'Fantasy' codeword to the list.)
OK... if we can make those genres an optional selector (drop-down box/checkboxes) for our submissions, then we have basically what we want - anyone will be able to mark their submission as whatever they consider appropriate. From the main page, New Submissions, Newest 20 Comments etc. we will see everything, while during the searches we could choose which genre to concentrate on, or take them all.
Then, we can make slight design changes for the submissions in various - more technical for sci-fi, etc. There could be whole specialised themes for those that want it, but the general look and feel should stay the same, I think. Also, a slightly different look on the summary pages. Enough to let viewers know 'this is sci-fi/western/whatever', but nothing extreme to make it a mess.
Later we could add personalized options, so people would a) prefer a genre (so their favourite genre would show everywhere first) or b) specialize on a genre (so they would only see their stuff - may be an option for some).
Only that much for now, Strolen. You see we don't want to overburden you. -
Re: Temp SF (diff then genre)
#20I do. All of them either. About half of them are untapped game genres... not that I think anyone should tap them.
