I was about to enter the City of Assylum, but was stuck for where to enter it. Is it an Idea or an Adventure (since many adventures can be set there)?

I was just wondering what people thought of a "settings" category. This would be for the city of Assylum, The Forrest of Silence (where no sound can occur), Bars and establishments, and other semi-magikal places. These places could be dropped down anywhere appropriate.

    Thoughts?

Hmmm, it might be as simple as adding another catagory to it. We were thinking a lot bigger earlier

    http://www.rpgcitadel.com/guild/index.php?topic=79.0

But since the rebuild I can pretty much whip out another catagory in a half day if there is enough people that will use it.

((Add a poll to your post MoonHunter?))

No surprises to what it will be. Just like the current catagories just catered to worlds. Have to decide what kind of choices to make, what selections per catagory.

    Name:
Type: (To be detailed but not overwhelmed by choices) City, Swamp, Forest,
For bars and such, how do we catagorize them and at the same time full cities?
    Magick: Yes/No

Type could be user added, but there should be some kind of drop down that we can actually do some kind of sort on....or we can not do that and I will just have to move to an actual text search, which is on my list to do anyway. I have the search more or less done from the other site, just need to port it over....Just need to get focused. (See my Wanderer description...procrastinator)

If we get enough discussion and interest, I have a three day weekend this weekend and I can make time to do it.

Well, I for one, think that a Places section would be good. After all, some locations don't fit into any of the other categories.
  4. Places? [||||||||||] 100% done

I agree. There are some things I've seen on other places here that would seem to fit better into a generic places category.

I think it's a fairly good idea to have an entry for Locations, in addition to the rest. It'd be a nice touch to be able to add places like Tyrindell and the Trade City Tarra-Lin...

I would suggest two pull downs....
The first would be Type. For that I would recomend:
    1) Establishment (for bars, shops, temples)
    2) City/Town/Village (for places of habitation)
    3) Ruins (for Ruins...and dungeons)
    4) Area (for forests of, swamps, pools of... , etc)
    5) Region (For sections of a country, a county, or duchy, or other such holding or alternate plane of existance)

You could have a refining fill in, like you have for items

The second would be Environment. For that I would recomend either of the following:

    Arctic
    Mountain
    Forrest
    Swamp
    Plains
    Farmland
    Desert
    Jungle
    River
    Oceanic
    Other

    or Arctic, Tundra, Temperate, Tropical

Another refining free text would be good.

    Magik Y/N is another "go"

    Thoughts?

I think I will skip the temperate/moderate and leave tha arctic you already listed.

Will add the "Any" choice to the second one, but I think pretty much everything has to fit in the catagoires listed in the first set. I can't think of anything that wouldn't fit in those catagories. Even manfred's undead world could be classified...I think.

For the main entering of the submission, I can't see any real seperation of inputs. Obviously will have a name text box, but as far as splitting it up into different things, pretty much let the user use the BBCode to make bold titles and such and split it up as they see fit if it needs it.

    Looks like this will happen.
  8. World Themes?

    #8
Think maybe adding a Country name so that if people have their own worlds or a theme, it would be able to be sorted by that name.

For instance, I have created the world Aros for a homebrewed rpg. If I used a text box that asked for world name, then all the submissions for that world could be filtered and just see those submissions.

I could actually do it this way:

If you have a world and have enough to develop a theme, I can have a seperate page where you could submit a theme. World name and a good overall description of the world and whatever else we think of that might be necessary.

Could decide if you want to allow other people to add to your world or if you want to keep it private. (or not, just popped into my head. Some people have an idea and may want to run with without worrying about other people putting in something that doesn't match their idea.) If they don't want to share, it won't show up in the combobox for new submissions for anybody except themselves.

Once you have a theme loaded, just use that world name from the drop down box when you input a submissions and then is easily sortable as well.

I think a “Places thread is a good idea.

I envision a category with multiple threads describing words and their basic themes. Off of which of themes threads, would be sub threads were we can post places to it.

    An example might be:

    Places
    - Aros
    - - Dark Heaven: Dark Heaven (DH) is a small town, composed of thirty buildings in a ring. Most buildings and their owners care nothing of the outside word, they are only interested in serving the clientele that flock to DH. The clientele consist of mostly thieves, robbers, highwaymen, and outlaws. The general way of doing business …

It would be nice if the description could have some major categories described in a few dropdown menus. It would also be nice to have a way to upload a picture/map

In this way worlds could be built much like a freeform rpg thread. For a final interesting feature, it would be nice to have a print routine that would print the world description followed by the places descriptions (sorted alphabetically) followed by the maps (labeled of course)

I thought we were talking about adding a Places section to the Citadel proper, with the Character and Plots and stuff.

You may have been. I was just read the various posts and the idea popped into my head so I though that I would put it out there before it disappeared.

I debated on creating a new thread so as not to jump off topic too much, but I though it would fit here fairly well. Do you think I should repost this idea somewhere else?

The Dark Knight has been way too amiable lately I think. Somebody check for possession or possibly a changeling.

I don't think that idea is too far off what I was thinking of, unless there will be another layer below the "Theme."

    Places
    - Aros
    - - Everything else will be at this layer.
    - Middle Earth
    - - Everything else.

So there *can* be themes to go by but unless you specifically search in a theme, or filter out the theme, you will be able to see all the places submitted just like the items/plots and there will be a

    Dark Heaven | Aros | City | Tavern |

heading type thing with the title. And those that are not associated with the theme just won't have that part ( Aros ) show up.

It can be used or not, won't affect the way they will be initially displayed, but the theme idea I like. Probably have a theme link in the heading for that catagory to so you can simply browse all the different themes there are.

For Manfred's undead world, you could then easily get all his things easily instead of having to search through his posts, or find all the undead submissions by going through them all.

I was thinking of a forums style world creator. With forums it would save someone the trouble of completely fleshing out their submission. Maybe they only have a narrative/idea for one person or building in a particular town.

Although a simple here is my town in all its completeness might be good too.

It done that way I think that some submissions should be able to be cross-posted. For instance a typical town drunk, his history, and favorite drink should be able to be found in any time and any town. Rare exceptions might be in a town/world where alcohol is not allowed. How difficult would it be to set up a way to post to multiple worlds, or a generic Place label (e.g. General) that is automatically placed in every world/place?

I see where you going and it seems to meandering to the old topic thread

    http://www.rpgcitadel.com/guild/index.php?topic=79.0

That was the original dream and I think better then just another simple submission section which is what I was sort of going for with this thread.

    Combine some ideas?

    Places
    - Aros
    - - Everything else will be at this layer.
    - Middle Earth
    - - Everything else.

    Aros
    Dark Heaven | City |

Started the notes today, going to code tomorrow. Any last thoughts?

This is my plan of attack. Catagories how discussed. Only one actual theme level. Thought hard about going two levels of customizeable themes like
    Aros - Land
    Darkheaven - City
--and then another level here for establishments that can all fall under Darkheaven

Decided not to. I think I will add the more descriptive text box like items (as mentioned) but also add another box to make a relationship to others wtihout building it directly into the pages. Trying to figure out how to implement that. Any ideas? Anybody understand what I am talking about?

Themes: (Land of Aros for instance)
There will be a "Create Theme" (theme? setting? better name?) link to go to a page where you can create a main heading. Name and overall description.

Once it is created you can choose it from a drop down on the input pages to add your submission to the overall theme.

There will be a theme page with the theme title and all the descriptions. Click on the title and takes you to that themes page that will basically be links to the submissions under that theme.

    Aros
.. Blah blah and so is the land of Aros.

    Regions:
.. Region 1 -Detail (being the text box for a more detailed heading)
    .... Summary

    Areas:
    ..Area 1 -Detail
    .... Summary
    .. Area 2 -Detail
    .... Summary

    City/Towns/Villages
    ..Dark Heaven
    .... City summary

    Establisments:
    ..Bar -Detail
    .... Summary

    Ruins:
    .. Death Tower -Detail
    .... Summary

At least that is the way I am picturing it at the moment.

Will also be able to see it the exact same way all the other ones and that will be it by default. The theme pages will be pretty much seperate.

I will also have to add a way to incorporate every other submission into it as well. So if you want to list a couple plots that can be used in it then you can link them, same for items and NPCs. It will be like the ideas are now for the plots, you will post the item or plot id and then when you view it the page will show the plot title and the summary and will be linked for the whole thing.

I think I will have a specific text box for adding those things so i don't have to parse the entire setting everytime. You can mention the submission in the main part but you will have to identify it again if you actually want it linked.

Will post more as I think about it.

    Hmmmmm......................
Seems good, but what if you want to just make a city or something? Or was that addressed? Maybe I didn't read carefully enough...

You don't have to use the theme idea at all. It will be structured like any other thing on the site except with the bonus of having themes, but to get to the themes you will have to go to the 'theme' page, so as far as normal day to day submissions, you just do them as usual and don't put them in a theme.

You will be able to make a city theme though if you want. Dark Heaven theme and then put a bunch of establishments and ruins under that one topic if you wanted.

The themes are going to be a convenience, not a necessity.

OK, a fledgling settings database is up and running. There is nothing special with it for right now, just made it pretty much identical to the others.

Now is the time to make adjustments to it. Here is what I am thinking of doing on it tomorrow.

    1) The link box at the bottom of the submission page does not work at the moment and am trying to decide if it is worth it. What I WAS thinking was that you could put a list of items/plots/npcs in that box and then when your setting was viewed there would be a list of these suggested things after it. They would actually only show the name/title and the summary and have a link for the person to view them (new window? or let them just start drifting?)

    2) The magic check box is not utilized anywhere at the moment. Might be good for a sorting but the sorting may not be working 100% at the moment. Will have to work on that as well.

    3) The BIG QUESTION
Having the world catagories. I actually started and have the backend all built. What I was thinking was having it as basically another whole submission area that was only available through the settings menu.

Once you are viewing the settings there will be a link available to VIEW WORLDS (or some other name for it). From there you can add/edit/ or view the World Ideas.

The World Ideas will have World Name, summary, full description, and it can be made private so only the creator can add Settings to it.

World Ideas will be set up similiar to the rest of the index pages but will be more brief. Name of the world and the summary. Click on the name, go see the full description of the world. IF you like the world click on view Settings and it will show you all the places directly associated with that world.

When settings are submitted they can be added to public Worlds or not, doesn't matter. There will be a dropdown menu of all the public Worlds on the submission page so if you want you can add to it.

No matter what, the new setting will always show up just like any other whether part of a world or not. Only difference for those settings that are associated with a world is that the world name will be in the stuff at the top and clickable so you can go straight to the full world write up if you were curious.

This will allow people, well, like me, who have their own set ups and places already to load them up together under a common heading and then they will be available to be seen all together. Like manfred's undead world, they would be a little odd just scattered about but if you can put them under a common world theme and view them in context it can add a lot, but you don't have to and that is the bonus.

What do you think of any or all of it? Any changes to the current setup even without the world's idea? What say ye.

Oh, and please submit something to test this puppy out.

Took a bit of messing, some of you noticed, but I got the links to work on the bottom of the settings now but in a different format then before. I put up instructions so it should be pretty easy to figure out...I hope.

I couldn't figure out how to make it appear in a new window of its own. Will work on that more, I know it can be done. (Yes, I know how to do it, but with the parsing and creation of the link on the fly it turns target into a variable and ruins the link)

Still looking for some feedback on the WORLD concept. No feedback=me not doing it. I think it will be cool but if I am the only one...

Also, is the link thing something you might want on the other submissions? Now that I know how to do it.....It could actually make a favorites page quite simple too....hmmmm. Forget the shopping cart...although that is still possible, but I could use this and allow each person to have one personal page where you could list all your favorites, or you could use it to collect some submissions. Once collected you could print them all together and share them. Not sure how useful it would be though. Not sure if I would use it for that, but to put up my favorites probably would be sort of cool. Ok, I am rambling and I am hungry.

(In the process I deleted my submission GRRRRR. Will add it again later. Time for dinner darnit)

    Oh, um....hmmmmmmm.

Might need to do that. Easiest way is to have the author move them by themselves. Secondary, me doing it and changing the author.....will think on that in the next few days if there is an easy way to do it. Databases content don't match.

Way doable. And still have to add the setting link availability in the posts like the others as well so you can link a setting in a NPC description.

I do sort of like how that works as well. In my good 'ole military exercise this week so working 13 hours or so with 6 hours of sleep so give me a couple weeks unfortunately to get to it.

The world idea would fit perfectly with what Ria is doing right now. Instead of making a seperate post with the dangerous places (which is a splendid idea) each setting will belong to the 'world' "ten most deadly places".

Each setting included in it will have a heading portion with that title (ten most...) and you would be able to click on it. Clicking on the "ten most deadly..." would bring you to the world page that would have the description and list just like the settings right now with each of the places listed under it. Ria could allow others to add to her list or keep it private for herself to add stuff to only.

The only real difference between having the world idea and the way it is now is that instead of having to link everything together with the bottom code stuff, it will have its own heading that can be clicked on to view the entire 'world' or selections.
