Please Vote - Vote Viewing Options
#1There has been a great debate for a loooong time on how to do the votes. The site started with no votes showing at all and only the submission stats would get updated. The Citadelians started to type their scores in their posts and so the ability of the site to track votes came into being. Times move and experience helps us understand good and bad ideas and questions have started arising about the necessity and possible negative results of showing all votes.
Are people voting what they feel? or are they voting what is expected? or are they voting higher for 'friends' so they don't hurt their feelings?
Are people being harassed for voting a certain way?
Are people comfortable voting at all when everybody is going to see it?
Is showing the votes helping the site or is it hindering it?
There is probably a list of questions along this route and bottom line is we all want accurate, unbiased votes. Not only to guage our own submissions but so we can see, at a glance, how other submissions we are thinking about reading are rated.
The REAL question is, how do YOU feel we should handle the visibility (or lack of) of voting?
No comments are necessary, but would be appreciated. I really want to know how you feel because this *is* a big deal and a big change.
To clarify to alleviate any misunderstandings. The submission vote count and average rating will not change, this is ONLY AFFECTING THE COMMENTS THEMSELVES AND THE VOTE SHOWN WITH IT.
Associate All Votes with Username (like it is now)
Associate No Votes with Username (show no votes at all on comments)
Associate all voters with a VOTED icon, WITHOUT the actual score they assigned!
------So perhaps a little icon of sorts that just shows that a vote was cast by this person.
Associate all voters with a VOTED icon, with one icon for > 3 and a different one for < 3
------A thumbs up for an over 3 vote and a thumbs down for an under 3 vote.
--------actual icon will not be a thumb obviously, but we will know the general level of your vote is the point -

#7yes I have a thought...I understand the reason behind the upcoming change (I assume 7 votes wins!) but an unseen vote will create a problem as well, though there is little reason to describe that problem, since its easy to figure out.
Where I come from, you put your name on something! and you document what you think for all to see. And if you "vote" to tell your peers what you thought about their brain-child, you let em' see EXACTLY what you voted!
Moon, I know your thought is that this way "buddies" wont have to give that extra sword to other "buddies" anymore, but now you'll have some people (you know who you are-and I know who you are too... bwahaha *cough*) that will vote willy nilly and sometimes cruelly.
Just a thought. Its already decided upon, so whatever...Anonymous votes it is!!!!

#8We will experiment with this for awhile and see what the reaction is. If we find we don't like it then we will put it up for another vote and change it again if we want. After all, a vote is what got the votes visible in the first place and is what is putting them back. So it is whatever those that speak want, those that remain silent must suffer the consequences of the squeaky wheels. :)

There are 12 tabulated votes and 2,000+ Citadellians. This vote shouldnt stay open a tad longer? -

#102000 thousand people enrolled... they have posted or logged in over the last year.
At any given day about 200 of them check the site.
Of those 200, a small handful post and interact with the site. The percentages are not bad. Figure about 20 might want to vote. Better than the last election.

#11I am not closing it yet. I won't get around to changing it for a little bit. I am guessing that we might get more opinions out of the woodwork once the change goes into effect. -

#12In the interest of consistant change I have made the update, althought the margin was narrower than I hoped. SImple majority seems like a poor way to base a decision, but the ease of this change is such that I thought it would be worth a try. Give those that want the change a chance to take a look and decide if they like it better this way or not.
Let us see the reaction and amend as necessary.
Change is good sometimes, riles up some opinions and might change some others. :) -

#14Not bad. The two swords are a bit too tiny and unclear, though. You can make them have less detail, now that they are smaller. -

#15All I did was shrink one of the sword images. Not going to get anything looking good that small. Maybe AG will gen us up a small icon of some sort.
