Item Descriptions
#1I just want to ask something quick about posting items and ratings. See, I thought it was the concept and the item itself that was supposed to be judged, not the back story to it. In MY world, every item has a unique back story to it. It can be the exact same item with the exact same properties, but it will have a different history and description because it is for a different player. If it is truely to be a unique one of a kind item, then only one player will have it. But it will still have it's very own history tailored to the world that our game is set in. That is just the way I do it. So, when I post an item, I leave the history rather open, with maybe just one or two small suggestions of history. But even those I leave open for the GM to fill in as he/she sees fit.
Am I wrong to do this? Because I have gotten docked on all my raitings for it. I supposse if you all like I can give the history that the item does have in my world, but good luck getting it to fit in yours. Unless you also have PCs named Sigrin, Gus, Annalisa, Shadowspawn, Jarred, Garret and Pohgan? And are set in the Forgotten Realms. And involve Eilistraee in your game. And are on a quest to recover the lost Sun Staff.
Am I a bit pissed? Yes. I wanted to share some idea's I had that I thought others could use and CUSTOMISE. But, if that does not interest anyone here, I will most graciously bow out and stop posting.
I still think it is a great site for ideas. But that is what I thought it was for. Ideas. If I wanted exact items, plots, etc I would look in a book. Wait, no...even those I change and alter for my players.
Sorry if I sound like a *****, but I find it very irritating that some people give a lower rating because I don't like to have a boxed in description.

#2Calm down, this is the internet, not Vietnam, my friend. :D
Why are you angry? I understand that you feel that we're somehow doing something wrong here, but please do not excoriate us for it.
We don't want you to "bow out" or anything like that. Just provide the backstories you have. If we feel we need to adapt them, we will.
Why do PCs have to come into the backstory of an item? Write the story of the item *BEFORE* it came into PC hands. That's what we mean by backstory. No item appears out of a void. And simply saying "a wizard made it" is not going to cut it for us.
The main docking of points in your case, I believe, was not that you had (insert such and such here) but that you had "a wizard made it". Why? Was it a gift? Did the monk or the bard need it for a specific reason? What did the monk do to deserve recieving the Troll Hands from "famous wizard"? And so on.
So, if I submit a big sword, I don't say: It is a large sword that increases the strength of the wielder. It belongs to so-and-so, who got it from the famous wizard.
I would say: This is the Sword of Whatever. It was crafted by Agsobel the Sorceror from the tooth of the Naglfar Dragon for the swordsman Whatshisname, a reward for Whatshisname's destruction of Mithorp, Agsobel's rival.
Or whatever.
I don't know, maybe I haven't described this very well for you. But you really should calm down. -
Re: Item Descriptions
#3Yes..sorry if I was a bit harsh. Had not had a great day, and that just sort of topped it off.
One tip, though. When someone is new, ya'll might want to lean a bit more towards the guiding and helping side, and a bit less towards the negative side. Not all of you were like that, but...it will turn new people off from posting if all they get is criticism said in a harsh manner.
Just my opinion as a newbie and a forum owner. -
