The first quest is nearing its end!
#1If we are to make people care about these quests, we need to declare a winner. Perhaps a second and third place too!
Should we award the winner with a bonus of some sort? XP? Special status (for instance "Quest winner", "Quest Champion Submission", or "Quest I: Gold Award" written below the submission, in the style of golden submissions)?
I believe it is important that we weed out the quest bugs before the quest is over too!
It seems that some people really look forward to this.
Strolen: What say you? -
Re: The first quest is nearing its end!
#2First:
What quest bugs???
:)
The quest wasn't really designed for such a broad subject and there is no easy way to fix that then what is currently in place; an admin review to remove them if they don't fit.
In this case, the quest got a rather large return so I don't see the harm in me putting up a 1st thru 3rd place winner in the category even. With Kudos and direct links to those submissions for a week or so until we start another quest or something. In order to put something in the actual submission would require me to take off my studying gloves and do some coding and I am not ready to do that at the moment. Would probably take me an evening which my career would surely miss. I am happy to spend a few 'break' minutes and throw up something on the frontpage as that wouldn't take me much more time then typing this post. I do want to recognize them and I think having something permanently associated with their submission is a VERY good idea. As well as something in their profile. Count on that to happen. (adding to my list)
XP award is good too, Maybe 2-3x the quests XP?
Even if the sorting by rating worked in the quest category, it might not be a good judge. Need something that takes into account - How many votes it has, how many views it has, its rating anc compare that to how long it was up. Not as easy as picking the one sub with the highest rating I don't think? Is it?

* A Better Hotscripts Rating Algorithm (please use it Hotscripts!)
* ----------------------------------------------------------------
*
* Author.: Justin Vincent (justin@visunet.ie)
* Web....: www.jvmultimedia.com
*
* NOTE
* ----
* Hotscripts are not using this rating algorithm to rate their
* scripts - but they probably should be! If you have a site similar
* to Hotscripts I recommend that you give this a try to make your
* rating system much fairer.
*
* OVERVIEW
* --------
*
* This little beauty has been written in the hope that hotscripts
* adopt it as their new rating/ranking algorithm.
*
* The hotscripts rating system has been unfair for years. Before the
* revamp they had been sorting sites in order of the number of script
* 'hits'. The flaw with that was that scripts listed for longer
* (perhaps three years (and out of date)) were ranking higher in the
* listings than scripts that were much better (and being used more).
* Simply by virtue of being there longer.
*
* Now that they have re-vamped the site, the rating system is even
* more unfair! I have no idea how they are coming up with their
* calculations but I know that the following is wrong:
*
* Lets take this cat as an example:
*
*
* > Home > PHP > Scripts and Programs > Database Tools
*
*
* Listed on page 1 slot 8 is the following:
* -----------------------------------------
* Title: Abstract DB
* Hits: 6318
* User Ratings: 5/5 (by 2 users)
* Member Rating: 0 (by 0 users)
*
*
* Listed on page 8 slot 5 is the following:
* -----------------------------------------
* Title: ezSQL
* Hits: 14119
* User Ratings: 4.63/5 (by 343 users)
* Member Rating: 5/5 (by 1 user)
*
*
* The reason why I care about this is that I wrote ezSQL. When
* I first submitted it it was on page 18 or so. I patiently
* waited for one year until final it was on page 2. And then,
* about 1 month after being on page 2 BAM! they change everything
* and its straight back to page 8!!!
*
* I'm sure I'm not the only one to be affected in this way, so in
* the vain hope that there is some justice out there I have written
* 'a better' ranking algorithm that would be much fairer all round.
* It would also help to make hotscripts a more reliable source for
* the best scripts.
*
* Cheers,
* Justin :)

/*
* There is only one function. It is explaind fully below. It would be
* very, very easy to re-write it in PERL or whatever.
*
* USAGE
* -----
*
* To work out the rating for any script simply run its stats through this
* function (or a similar function written in PERL or whatever). Then simply
* insert the returned integer into your rating table (and order scripts by
* that field when listing them).
*
* echo hotscripts_rating(14119,180,343,4.63,1,5);
*

/* Num days on site must be at least 1 or division by 0 might happen */
if (!$num_days_on_site) $num_days_on_site = 1;
/* the final calculation */
return round(
(
/* Rather than just use number of visits lets use number of */
/* visits divided by number of days on the site in total. */
/* That way all sites are judged equally */
($num_visits / $num_days_on_site) +
/* This multiplies the total number of votes with the */
/* total rating. Therefore the more votes that are */
/* added the more we can trust this rating. And of */
/* course we also bring number of days on site in to it to */
/* judge all scripts equally */
(($num_votes * $vote_rating) / $num_days_on_site) +
/* Same as above with members reviews */
(($num_reviews * $review_rating) / $num_days_on_site)
/* Note: we add all of the above together and then */
/* times by 10000. This allows us to return a rounded */
/* rating (as an integer) yet still retain 4 decimal */
/* places of accuracy */
)
*10000

Re: The first quest is nearing its end!
#3Hey, I have a vague idea for the next quest... -
Re: The first quest is nearing its end!
#4The quest is really a success.
And I have an idea, too: seeing that many non-quest items were drawn accidentaly into the Shards Quest, how about an optional limitation:
for a something to count as a quest submission, it would have to have a certain freetext. Simple and effective. Also note that the whole Mercenary challenge could be simply made a quest.
As for criteria, there should be at least the least number of votes (3, 5 or...?).
Also, I do not think we should not give much weight to how long a post has been up - let's have instead a 'time of harvest', when posts are not added anymore, but everyone is notified (on the main page, as in the forums) that the quest is over, and they have the last chance to put down their votes and comments before it is evaluated. Then we can make sure to put at least the required N votes to each item, and find our favourites. Figure a few days, at most a week. Script does the check.
Then the reward for the first three places - the honorary mention on the home page for a week; forum notification; XP; mention in profile; a subtitle below a submission's name. Anything else?
(As for the XP reward - give the third again the quest XP, the 2nd twice the XP, the first three-times of the quest XP. Easy.) -
Re: The first quest is nearing its end!
#5Freetext is not a bad idea at all. Perhaps it could be either then and up to the quest creator to define how the submissions will be counted. Then you could have any "Lifeform -> Ethereal" or you can have a Pirate quest using Pirate in Freetext. That allows for basically anything! Will still have to have admin review on anything that is freetexted but that will happen anyway just by us reading it. Cool!
I agree with the rest of what manfred said, but if there is a 3 month quest, somebody puts in a sub on the first day, it is there for 3+ months while the newest one is put in the last week or so, then we give a week grace period....I guess there is no way to make them equal, so too bad I suppose.
Crap late for work, thought must stop. -
Re: The first quest is nearing its end!
#6*ahem, ahem*
OK, the quest is over. I was kind of busy when it happened, and have completely forgotten it.
So: did anything special happen when the quest has ended??? -
Re: The first quest is nearing its end!
#7No. Big disappointment. -
Re: The first quest is nearing its end!
#8Nice going to AG timing it to end two weeks before the biggest test of my life. ;)
No more quests till we figure out how to finish them and I can get something into place. Sucks big time that it simply fades....but only so much I can do. -
Re: The first quest is nearing its end!
#9Well, we are GMs. What do we do? We wing it.
"We never forgot about this quest, we just debated it's successes, it's failures and where to go now". They will buy that.
Of course, now that we have sketched a master plan, we will never delay again.
But we need to recognize this quest, sooner or later. We need to declare a winner.
I can photoshop a special icon for you. When I have the time ;)

Re: The first quest is nearing its end!
#10May Mathom carry u -
Re: The first quest is nearing its end!
#11Can we start throwing out ideas for the next quest, for whenever we figure out what to do with the last one? -
Re: The first quest is nearing its end!
#12Sure thing. Wait, the Captain had some idea already.
CP, what is it? -
Re: The first quest is nearing its end!
#13Moon had an idea too.
But, guys and gals, I think it is kind of disappointing if we launch another quest without having resolved the previous one -
Re: The first quest is nearing its end!
#14Then allow me to put another secret item on the Wishlist:
Quest Rewards
Once we have those, we can create some flavour text around it. ;) -
Re: The first quest is nearing its end!
#15Tell me what to do and it shall be done! I can make some time this weekend to put together a few things and this can be one of them.
What do you want? I am at a slump on what to do with it but am happy to take direction. -
Re: The first quest is nearing its end!
#16My 2 cents:
"Strolenite Medal of Honour": (The winner) Special Icon (Perhaps the paw icon I posted in the admin natter thread?) and +50 xp
"Strolenite Badge of Recognition": (The runner up) +15 xp
All others: Nothing -
Re: The first quest is nearing its end!
#17I am just curious to know who won. -
Re: The first quest is nearing its end!
#18
I am just curious to know who won.
Me too. -
Re: The first quest is nearing its end!
#19Maybe we can take a few bucks of the donations and give a prize of some sort? Better than a cheeseburger or scorpions. -
Re: The first quest is nearing its end!
#20Prizes are all well and good, and won't take too much effort to decide, but first we need a winner. How do we determine that, anyway? -
Re: The first quest is nearing its end!
#21You pick one! :) -
Re: The first quest is nearing its end!
#22I'm going to take you literally, you realize this, yes? -
Re: The first quest is nearing its end!
#23Do it! You scared? Chicken bruck bruck bruck.
At least then we have somewhere to start even if there is disagreement. But I think you made a good choice! -
Re: The first quest is nearing its end!
#24Okay, I'll go through the entries and post a few "finalists" up here... when ever I get done with it. Then we can vote on places. Sound good? -
Re: The first quest is nearing its end!
#25What are you doing reading this thread? Aren't you picking winners?
Thanks Ria!!
-
Re: The first quest is nearing its end!
#26Thought I'd post the criteria I used to determine finalists for future reference.
Had to have a combined vote of 4.5 or better.
Had to meet the quest requirements (I was sad; a submission with nine votes and a perfect 5 was listed as part of the quest, but was put there as a result of the bug that took every new item submitted during that time and put it in the quest).
retty strict, wasn't I? -
Re: The first quest is nearing its end!
#27You removed that quest right? There should be a link for that. -
Re: The first quest is nearing its end!
#28I didn't, but someone else can. -
Re: The first quest is nearing its end!
#29Re Strolen:
How about these simple additional rules since in the future this may eliminate all of us from voting:
--------------
In order to win, you must vote.
You may not vote on your own submission.
-------------
This will give us more votes and keep it fair. The authors should all be active enough to vote since they would have submitted something in the Quest time period, this quest being a notable exception.
Inofficial quest rule #7: Upon expiration of the quest, the quest's author may PM the authors of the best quest submissions, or let them know in any other way.
With Strolen's rule, this should guarantee us at least a few votes, and some attention. What do you say? -
Re: The first quest is nearing its end!
#30I'm good with that. And now that the voting is underway (incidentally, I thought that just admins voted...), we can figure out prizes. :twisted: -
Re: The first quest is nearing its end!
#31Uhh... BUMP? -
Re: The first quest is nearing its end!
#32Well, AG suggested XP rewards. Is that what we want to do, or what? I plan to let the voting go on for another week or two, and then shut it down, so we need to figure this out. Personally, I can't think of anything better than what AG suggested, so that gets my vote. -
Re: The first quest is nearing its end!
#33OK, let's take AG suggestion. Plus the honorary mention on the main page for a week and a forum notification. I am noting it here so it won't be forgotten.
Any other suggestions? -
Re: The first quest is nearing its end!
#34So we have a winner. Do we have prizes? -
Re: The first quest is nearing its end!
#35Two round-trip tickets to Bora Bora -
Re: The first quest is nearing its end!
#36I suppose there is little we can do in the way of physical rewards, so let us just declare the winner and give him some xp, titles and bragging rights okay?
-
Re: The first quest is nearing its end!
#37Sounds good to me. -
Re: The first quest is nearing its end!
#38Yeah, that was on my list and I didn't get to it, sorry!!!
Will try and do it through the next week. Wife is going out of town again so I will have time.
