  1. A replacement race for hobbits

I think that hobbits are as a race usless in anything other than tolkien. In their physical strenght and height is huge weakness I admit that but what about their temperment. They are good people and classical heroes and yust because they do not like violence does not mean they have to be weak and defenceless.

Therefore I purpose GMs should try to make a hobbit like race that only needs to have the quailities of a peaceful race that only fights because they have no choice.

For example in the Wheel of Time the Ogier are a race of huge men that are good natured and so anti-violence it is annoying, but if they are angry and provoked then they are implaceable enemies.

Hobbits don't have to be weak

How about a race of little hobbit people that ride giant rats and unleash clouds of poisoned darts and arrows against foes? Sounds promising? Thin about it. Small but swift mounts and deadly, light weapons that can kill you just by nicking your skin. Who needs all that brawn to slow you down? Throw in some awesome camoflouge skills, and you're good to go.

I faintly remember discussions that even in Middle Earth, hobbits would sooner or later die out. Being the non-violent types, and not very receptive to advanced technology, the farmers would be pushed out.

    One equalizer can be magic.

In my game world, hobbits are miserable workers of magic like the dwarwes are, but both are adept at intuitive channeling of magic into the things they work and concentrate on. For the dwarwes it is the tools and their strongholds. The hobbits are not only good farmers, they are excellent farmers with an intuitive knack for living things - which is quite a bonus, along with their higher breeding rate. Aside from farming, they could excel in herbalism and lesser alchemy... which would bring us back to those poisions, too. (Oh, and better watch that direction of development: it could easily end in the Little Ninja stereotype.)

Just a little idea on the pyre.

Why not make them fast, but weak? Give them strong legs so they can jump high, and five them mid range weapons.

Why do hobbits have to be weak in magic? In lord of the rings they only don't have magic cause the wizards like Gandalf are the only magic users (though there may be some exceptions with the elves). The hobbits can also make use of a natural barrier like a huge river or a mountain range. The Hobbits could be threatened and rely on the PCs to save them or they could go through a stage of militarisation. Your must remember that everyones underestimation of the hobbits could be used against the enemy. The hobbits could get a great general to help them and turn them into an army, he could even train hobbits in strategy.

Wrong Forum guys. Should be in the Sage area. And even then it should not be in there.

necromancer, if you want to create a species, and want help doing it...
Make  a Lifeform Post for the race.  New Take -Hobbit or Hobbit Substitute or what ever.

Make sure the post is a scroll. Make you click the need advice flag on the post.

Put down your basic ideas for your Hobbit peoples. Then list some directions you would want to go.

We will then plug away at that.

Remember folks, if it is thread that could be a submission on the front page, it should be a submission on the front page.
