Awards, welcoming committee and stuff
#1I have been using the Hall of Honour as a way of keeping worthy (in my opinion) posts visible above the deluge of transferred posts. I feel that too many good posts have been lost in the transfer and I considered the Hall of Honour a way to remedy this. I might have been a little easy on the awards at times, but I really felt that people ought to catch those special submissions that I did stumble over on my sojourn through the site.
In that regard I discovered something about Hall of Honour awards and Golden Nominations:
1. There are a few users, like me, who actively use their Hall of Honour quotas. I am fairly low level and I think my quota is too big. Those Hall of Honour posts show up every (ugly word) time I load the main page and given that some users can potentially nominate 7 posts a day, the list could get mighty ugly once people figure it out.
2. As for the use of HoH: I think we admins have a responsibility to use the Hall of Honour votes. I have talked to some very frustrated newcomers who have posted fine submissions that drowned and fell to the bottom of the Citadel. As administrators we should help the community feel good and make every user feel special. C'mon guys, climb down from your ivory towers... A little award to a newcomer (if he deserves it) can go a long way to make their day. Some of the more prominent admins have not even awarded it one single time...
Make no mistake: The transfer is testing the patience of our flock. We should actively work to make the users feel good, welcome and above all: noticed. A nice comment, a heartfelt welcome or a deserved good vote (or even Hall of Honour) goes a long way to making this community thrive. (And there are a couple of us admins that could do without gazing in our own navels for a couple of days. I speak from personal experience ;) ).
3. What are the Golden Nominations for? No one seems to ever award one? Surely we admins must have a favourite submission? "Return to me" was my favourite :)
So: Instead of only issuing new rules, new changes, and advocating our own stuff, could we try to make people feel like they are in a good natured artistic community, and not in court? :p
Being an admin is not only about regulating and commandeering. It is also about "customer relations". More users means more ideas, more feedback, and so on.
